I am 55 years old. Former rock percussionist. My dad was a dance band leader. Music has always been huge in my life. This song has IT all. Purely one of the finest songs ever charted. In an age where "they don't make 'em like that anymore", Ben Folds did.
This song came out a few years after I finally made my way out of a really fucked up and physically abusive relationship, and honestly, NOTHING ELSE has ever put the mirror to my face, made me see what had been happening, and helped me cope with what I'd been through the way THIS SONG did, years later. I still cry - and I don't even know why anymore, but I think maybe JOY - every time I hear this song.
+Rodney Lockwood dammit, im sorry. whatever it was, if _this_ song got you through it, i _know_ it was horrible, and i am damn sorry that happened to you. :( it really does help to know that you're not alone in this kind of stuff, though, doesn't it? and it really helps when somebody can put it into words the way he did! i hope you're better and stronger and happier now, friend!
+Marla Singer Well, first of all, best username EVER! Second, holy cow really?! I never knew that! I can't imagine what kind of nightmare emotional roller coaster that must have been!! Wow, no kidding he would know!
+YouDummy So I just listened to this song for the first time. I found myself loving it and then started to cry. Apparently this happens to WOMEN in their late 40's as well ha ha! This guy is an amazing talent!
+YouDummy Ben and Adam Duritz have made this 50 year old guy cry like a baby so many damn times in the past decade. I feel you. The soundtrack of our lives...
It is a masterpiece from a musical genius....the song has everything. Ben Folds, whilst enjoying a substantial following, remains grossly underrated. It's always great to see people newly discovering Ben.....he's been around a long time now, and has a huge body of work....there is never a time when i play his stuff that I am not moved emotionally, or where I cannot find portions of Me and my own life within his lyrics...such is his real talent.
Lindsey, I agree! I happened upon this music around 2004 when I just didn't see anything else out there. In my time,..the vocals and instrumentals HIT YOUR SOUL! Ben Folds filled that need! I wished there were more bands out there like this now! :(
Ben Folds is the soundtrack to the last 22 years of my life. Good times, hard times, raising my children...my whole adult life. So many memories tied up in his songs, and now my young adult children are fans. My middle son and I are driving to Nashville tomorrow to see him in concert, it will be the 4th time we have seen him together. He is a musical genius, for sure!
On the up side, he’s influenced so many other artists, which is arguably even better than a period of steady radio play before dropping off. Counting Crows even mention him in a song :)
Ben Folds wrote this song after his label wanted a hit. He kept coming to them with different songs they didn't think were right. He said, "What Elton John song do you want me to write?' They said "Tiny Dancer". The man is a genius. The story makes this song amazing.
For anyone who doesn't understand what "gaslighting" means, point them to this song. "She liked to push me, then talk me back down, until I believed I was the crazy one..." Brilliant.
somehow I forgot about this song for like, ten years. I came back to listen to it as an adult who's since endured a couple emotionally abusive relationships, and I've never heard another one that captures the sort of fragile, exhausted liberation of realizing you're free as you limp home.
We'd hit the bottom, I thought it was my fault And in a way I guess it was I'm just now finding out What it was all about Moved to the west coast away from everyone She never told me that you called Back when I was still, I was still in love Till I opened my eyes and walked out the door And the clouds came tumbling down And it's bye-bye, goodbye, I tried And I twisted it wrong just to make it right Had to leave myself behind I've been flying high all night So come pick me up...I've landed The daily dramas she made from nothing So nothing ever made them right She liked to push me and talk me back down Until I believed I was the crazy one, and in a way I guess I was... But I opened my eyes and walked out the door And the clouds came tumbling down And it's bye-bye, goodbye I tried Treading a sea of a troubled mind Had to leave myself behind Singing bye-bye, goodbye I tried If you wrote me off I'd understand it Because I've been on some other planet So come pick me up... I've landed And you will be so happy to know I've come alone, it's over But I opened my eyes and walked out the door And the clouds came tumbling down And it's by my goodbye I tried Down comes the reign of the telephone czar It's OK to call Now I'll answer for myself Come pick me up, ...I've landed
“Moved to the west coast, away from everyone…she never told me that you called” That lyric has always messed with my head…that type of thing has happened to *millions* of dudes all over the world.
Don't know what it is about this song, but I hear it start and I just want it to go on forever. When it ends, I want to play it again. Just can't get enough of it.
Ben is my hero: Been playing for piano for 40 years, and grew up on the same influences he did: Randy Newman, Elton John, Billy Joel. Every time I see Ben in concert is like the first time. An under-rated genius both musically and lyrically. Play Landed at home on the grand piano at least once a week. Still -grin-.
It's ironic how a song can make you feel so somber and so good at the same time. I don't know if it's the anguished lyrics set to a spirited melody or something else entirely but it just goes to show how emotionally powerful music can be.
This, like many of Ben's best songs, makes me sad and teary as I think of failed relations and at the same time it makes me happy and invigorated at the prospect of moving on to better things.
Very nice. FYI i Came here because Mr Pool posted a video on telegram, folks say it's from this song. I don't get it lol. But I'm glad I heard your song, it's very good. 🎶 Just sharing ❤️🇺🇸🌎✌️
Mr Pools post is slowed down and reversed but the part where he sings "but I opened my eyes" you can match the music to Pools version. What a time to be alive!! 🇺🇸🌻🙏💞
There is a power and subtlety to his music. Those are a powerful combination that pop music just doesn't provide. In any era really. This is the type of music that sticks with you. Makes you think. Whereas songs like "Girls Just Want to Have fun" or "Old Town Road" may be fun and have a sick beat, but completely lack in substance to give the song lasting significance. People see music more and more as a vehicle for dancing and less and less as an expression of the human soul. I am grateful for musicians like Ben Folds who keep it real in their music.
One of the best melodic songwriters of all time, no question. Just a tremendous musical talent. The guy kills me with the otherworldly, lush minor key stuff. If this doesn't get to you, you may have hearing damage.
Responsible for the greatest Dr. Dre cover ever recorded, plus he did a song with Fraggles, and an album with William Shatner. No one is cooler than Ben Folds.
This song has been deeply imprinted on my memory since I was a little kid and this is the first time I've heard it in near a decade. My older brother was a big Ben Folds fan when he was the age I am now. Now he's married and has a child of his own. Dust in the wind and all that.
I remember listening to this song on a plane from Jackson, MS on a rainy day on Jan 15, 2006. The album had just came out, and I had just ended a 7 year relationship, in which I was the bad guy for the last 3 years of the relationship. My final destination, Parris Island, SC. Though things never turned around, I headed for the west coast and then over seas(Japan). Maybe this song is why I found peace in a strange land? Either way, I always find solidarity in this track.
Stanley Green Holy shit. You too? For me it was 2006, a seven year marriage up in flames....and it was “my fault.” This song man. Anyway, your experience is damn near parallel to mine. Cheers!
this is one of my favourite Ben Folds songs, i have listened to it countless times, when i listen to my music on random and this song comes on i end up listening to all his albums one after the other.
Ben really has a great talent for making you FEEL something of substance with his music. The opening notes on the piano of this song just grab you and never let go.
This is up there with the best of James Taylor, Carole King, Elton John, Billy Joel, Cat Stevens etc for pure melodic, emotionally powerful songwriting and performing. Many of these multi-million selling teenybopper or alt garbage acts don't have the musical talent or inspiration that Ben Folds has in his toe nail.
So apparently his record company wasn't happy with what he was turning in so finally he asked them, "Which Elton John song do you want me to write?" The answer: Tiny Dancer. The rest is history.
Thanks Ben Folds for writing another great song that expresses just the thing for these precocious moments in life. I couldn't say it as honestly as you have, and so thank you kindly. Minnie Lou Raper loves you...
Only the soul of a survivor of Narcissistic Abuse can write this. Here’s to all in Narc recovery. Blessings and peace to all of you. To all...Please(!!!!) know that it wasn’t your fault. Never let anyone tell you. I know it hurts, but it’s nothing that was on you to fix. It’s ok. I understand.
Brick was maybe my first Ben Folds fave, staying up late to watch VH1 while my dad slept on the couch nearby. Since then I've been a fan of old and new. Just finished his book and I'm even more in love. I saw him play at the Pinewood Bowl and it was amazing!
I had this CD...yes back before ipods/itunes were really common...maybe before youtube I think even. I listened to it over and over...I wish I still had it. Amazing artist.
I ended up here from listening to old Gervais/Pilkington/Merchant shows. The uploader has to cut out the songs for copyright reasons, but you hear the first and last couple of seconds. And that intro piano lick is on fire. Ben gets a fiiine sound out of a piano. Gona listen again.
A connection between Ben Folds being the first artistic advisor to the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center? Question everything. The past has a way, of proofing future.
I have heard most of your music. Something about this song makes me feel happy and complete. I can't say you are a genius or the best songwriter ever I can say that you can touch the souls of some people and make their life decisions kinda make sense. Day to day. Person to person. Each decision is different. This song is great, your songwriting is amazing, and I don't want to see you naked.

Iggy M right on, cathartic!
Congrats. Was like that on this tune à few years ago.

I just now found him by accident, and I'm stuck here. I'm loving this!
Ben Folds wrote this song after his label wanted a hit. He kept coming to them with different songs they didn't think were right.
He said, "What Elton John song do you want me to write?'
They said "Tiny Dancer".
The man is a genius. The story makes this song amazing.

Incredibly true! I love that the resolution is freedom. I love that he demonstrates you *can* escape.
Your comment taught me to forget my past, if you never read this thats cool, ephemeral is the way of things, but thanks👍
My past at uni, thankyou❤️
And in a way I guess I was…
somehow I forgot about this song for like, ten years. I came back to listen to it as an adult who's since endured a couple emotionally abusive relationships, and I've never heard another one that captures the sort of fragile, exhausted liberation of realizing you're free as you limp home.
We'd hit the bottom,
I thought it was my fault
And in a way I guess it was
I'm just now finding out
What it was all about
Moved to the west coast away from everyone
She never told me that you called
Back when I was still, I was still in love
Till I opened my eyes and walked out the door
And the clouds came tumbling down
And it's bye-bye, goodbye, I tried
And I twisted it wrong just to make it right
Had to leave myself behind
I've been flying high all night
So come pick me up...I've landed
The daily dramas she made from nothing
So nothing ever made them right
She liked to push me and talk me back down
Until I believed I was the crazy one,
and in a way
I guess I was...
But I opened my eyes and walked out the door
And the clouds came tumbling down
And it's bye-bye, goodbye I tried
Treading a sea of a troubled mind
Had to leave myself behind
Singing bye-bye, goodbye I tried
If you wrote me off I'd understand it
Because I've been on some other planet
So come pick me up...
I've landed
And you will be so
happy to know
I've come alone,
it's over
But I opened my eyes and walked out the door
And the clouds came tumbling down
And it's by my goodbye I tried
Down comes the reign of the telephone czar
It's OK to call
Now I'll answer for myself
Come pick me up,
...I've landed
And I twisted it wrong just to make it right
Had to leave myself behind 1:11
I've been lucky enough to be a fan of ben folds since whatever and ever amen. They will always hold a special sway with me.
“Moved to the west coast, away from everyone…she never told me that you called”
That lyric has always messed with my head…that type of thing has happened to *millions* of dudes all over the world.
‘She never told me that you called…’ I love that line
Don't know what it is about this song, but I hear it start and I just want it to go on forever. When it ends, I want to play it again. Just can't get enough of it.
Yea I don't even get the real motive of this song but it's enjoying and peaceful
@@ItsFactTime it's about him escaping from a physically and mentally abusive relationship.
I'm going to hazard a guess and say, like many of us, you've probably lived this song at some point.
@@SKBottom ohh thanks!!
@@SKBottom heck yeah. This is so damnn freakin relatable
This song is incredibly personal for me, having "landed" almost 5 years ago myself. Such a flood of emotions every time I hear it.
The opening phrase has to be one of my fave piano licks of all time
The piano...the lyrics.. this is real music...one of the best songs ever written.
This man deserves to be more celebrated
One of the greatest songs ever written
Every time I listen to a Ben Folds song I die, and then I am reborn from the ashes. It is quite painful...but that's the price you pay for good music!
Hear hear!
Ben is my hero: Been playing for piano for 40 years, and grew up on the same influences he did: Randy Newman, Elton John, Billy Joel. Every time I see Ben in concert is like the first time.

This song is a masterpiece
Ben is incredible. Easily one of the greatest living songwriters.
Very possibly his greatest song
Possibly
Absolutely possible! 😃

20 years and that piano riff still reigns supreme
This, like many of Ben's best songs, makes me sad and teary as I think of failed relations and at the same time it makes me happy and invigorated at the prospect of moving on to better things.
This song is so beautiful it actually hurts. It's an exquisite pain.
totally agree... beautiful pain...

Reminiscing of a young and vibrant Elton John
Ben really has a great talent for making you FEEL something of substance with his music. The opening notes on the piano of this song just grab you and never let go.
