Skyway Pier Grouper Fishing with Light Tackle 😲

- In this episode, Chris and I venture to the Skyway State fishing pier to try our luck as some light tackle grouper fishing. The Skyway is known for big grouper and I must have hung a monster because my St. Croix Legend Xtreme imploded on a big strike that really put me in a state of shock. I have never had a fish break the legend and I have caught hundreds if not thousands of fish on the rod. Overall we caught many grouper and had a great time. The ticket was large whitebait, they did not seem to be too interested in pigfish, grunts, or blue runners on this day.

Came back to this video in the spirit of grouper season about to open back up for us. Gave me hope of trying my saragosa 5k at the skyway for grouper watching you catch that keeper on the BG.

Cool vid. Having a boat I normally stay away from the Skyway, just because there are usually a lot of people on the bridge and I just try to give a lot of room, but your video made me want to leave the boat in the garage one day and just spend the day on the bridge. Figure there had to be some kind of fissure or Nick in that St Croix for it to snap like that, sure it will get replaced, love their rods. 813

Exactly, and they suck up every bait you have. The pinfish are so plentiful that you can’t catch any other species of fish! It’s horrible at the Skyway.
Gotta use the pinfish to catch larger fish. 👍

I have been lurking on your channel for awhile, just now subed. Really enjoy the vids and I'm learning too! When I get down there next month full time my goal is to get the grandkids out there on the skyway. We have just bank fished so far. So any tips for takin the kids out there would be appreciated!
Get them a small sabiki rig and tip it with shrimp, they will have a blast catching baitfish. Not sure how old they are.

Your videos on the skyway for grouper have me syched. I have 2500 and 4000 7 ft spinning rigs with light braid. 10ft surf rod with 4000 spinner 20 pound braid.....all for inshore/ surf.
I want to setup a conventional combo for the skyway. Hoping it can double for grouper / king...etc. not looking to brake the bank on the first setup. Can you make a recommendation? Thx
I can relate to both of you guys. I've had days like Chris had and I don't know what is up with SSP tide charts. I find that they are always off. I as a rule of thumb figure they are off by at least 2 hours
It can be very frustrating when trying to coordinate a specific video out there but hey, sometimes you have to improvise.

Great video. I've had this happen grouper fishing 2 St Croix a legend and a mojo both brand new they are garbage. Never again lol I put my $$ on star rod or ugly stick .

You can free line in the same exact manner or use a Carolina rig. Just locate the rock piles.

That rod is worth the money. What most haven't seen are the hundreds of large fish that it has caught over the years.
Joshua Taylor I’m still on the fence between the 7’6” ML or M Avid Inshore and the Legend Inshore...but then I’m reading good things on the Extreme. Choices. Being an exclusive on land fisherman, I’m looking for both versatility for live bait (shrimp, pin fish) and artificial.
You do any type of guide service of the bridge for someone flying in for some fishing there? Went out of Hubbard's a few months ago on a party boat and had a decent time, but now checking out coming back in the spring and trying the bridge out.
I guide just not on the bridges anymore.

What length and power spinning rod do you recommend for catching skyway grouper the size you were catching?
Honestly, I would recommend fishing a heavier action rod, medium-heavy or heavy, and a large spinning reel with sufficient drag. 24lbs or higher.

I honestly don't, it broke very low on the rod which really isn't typical.
Do you prefer swivels over line to line knots? If so, why?
Not typically but on my carolina rig yes. Swivels prevent line twist.
Go to the skyway often and never catch grouper. Where do you get your bait from? How do you locate the rock piles? Heard different things about that. Best times are low tide/high tide?

Hey Josh, I have a question about the tide chart. If the chart says that the tide is high at 3pm, does that mean the tide is actually moving about an hour to an hour and a half before that? What I want to know is, is the 3pm mark is actually the point where the tide has reached its peak and is no longer moving, right?

That’s a 5/0?? Looks bigger. Would you not recommend a bigger one, prob like a 7/0?
Depends on the bait size really, I like to use what I can get away with and get more strikes if possible.
Do you bleed the grouper on the pier? Or just throw him in the cooler and take him home?
We typically just toss them in the cooler.
I did the same thing to a st. Croix tide master
We have only really had that happen on the Tide master rods.
Your break appears to be right where the blank contacts the railing. It's like a huge concrete file, just a little wear and it's now a weak spot! I made some 90 degree pieces of polycarbonate sheeting that I bungee to those rails to prevent this.
I don't lay my rods on the concrete, I always lay them against the large guide. Not to mention I don't pier fish that frequently anymore.
Anybody else set an alarm for this? Only me okay 😔

I am really not sure, it broke in a very odd place too IMO. I am sure St. Croix will take good care of me. Chris probably did do it.
St Croix Legends (including Xtreme’s) have a 15 year warranty and I’m certain they will replace.

I ran into the same tide problem last week.i got there at the listed low tide and three hrs later the tide dropped lower than it was when I got there.wtf
Tide chart said high tide 7pm. Incoming was still going at 10pm. Complete garbage.
Alex Cesarz I just recently moved here, but up in Long Island New York where I am the tide don’t slack till almost 3 hours after high, could this be possible it’s happening there? The bay is huge over there and may take that long for the current to die down, a lot of people get confused between tide and current, I’m not saying you are, just wondering .
That is the best thing to do unless if you know that you can get the hook out easily just cut the line as far as you can
Absolutely, the fish will live and the hook will eventually rust out.

Nice grouper Josh! And I feel your pain Chris, I'm certain there was a dolphin targeting me last time I was there. Stole my fish three times because the bite was far out on the bay side. It would get me as I would bring it between the bridges. I used to think they were cool.
The dolphins are an absolute menace, they have stolen so many grouper from us.

That color variation does not appear in the white St. Croix web picture and it makes me wonder if that is possibly a laminate reinforcement area of weakness in/on the rod... Haha, these are what we call professional consumers, that just blow money on a over priced rod that gets snapped in half by a small grouper LMAO I've caught bigger fish on my Penn Fierce III 8000 rig and never had any problems. This is just as sad as the guys I watched in astronomy being marketed to. They go out and spend all that money. All I gotta say is I hope your well vested because shit happens in life and if your not investing your money and just tossing it into stupid over priced fishing tackle you might regret it. I'd never spend more then $250 for a rod and reel All I know is my Penn Fierce III 8000 will handle every thing I fish for. And I only paid $135 for the combo and the line.

All I know is I'm out $100 for a Go Pro I lost in the Skyway Pier water from Saturday. I'm glad you can afford to break rods, and toss money around like it's nothing because I wouldn't want you to know what it's like to try and live on $11.40 an hour getting if I'm lucky 23 hours a week. And trying to afford to enjoy some thing I like to do and pay for bills. Some of us just gotta work the shit jobs so others can enjoy life. Ohh and I'm not trying to play the victim card here I'm simply stating that's how things are right now. At one point I was making $1,800 a week years later I find myself bagging your groceries and fetching your shopping carts.
I've had low paying jobs and I don't throw money around. I've also climbed the ladder and worked tremendously hard. I've built up a business, I pay my dues. I also enjoy buying fishing equipment. If you don't like making little money, change your circumstances. Good luck!
