Never clicked faster. This is just the sound of 1997 for me. Couldn't go anywhere without hearing it, and any time i hear this track now it takes me back to that exact time period!
it started in the late 80s really, but this era in the UK (kinda early to mid/late 1990s) was really heavily Jazz influenced, so we had loads of labels like Mo Wax, Acid Jazz, Soul Jazz Records springing up, and we had all different kinds of fusions with Jazz, Hip Hop/trip hop and Electronica, Drum and Bass, House. . . so we had some pretty big artists come out of that like the two you mentioned here Jamiroquai, Reprazent, also Gilles Peterson founded Acid Jazz records in the late 80s and that had quite a big impact as it brought a lot of genuine Jazz artists into more mainstream musical styles, I think he was kinda doing like Mancusos loft parties in the US did for disco and jazz artists like Vincent Montana Jr, in the late 70S thru the 80S etc
Yes yes guys, this is another anthem. Bristol crew represent! Ive been mentioning this in many comments. This track and album was performed live and the album New Forms win the mercury music prize in 97 beating the spice girls and radio head to the prize. Seminal, seminal track. "Testing new sounds" back in 97...its been done guys. All these tracks would be played in sets together, godyouve gotta hear mix tapes, thats a whole other dimension cos this is dance music made for clubs, thats where it happened.
It has taken over. You hear so many tunes in the radio that are drum and bass or use drum and bass beats. Hell, even sporting events and walkouts to fights use dnb. It's so much more widely accepted.
Jamiroquai "Do you know where you're coming from" was the early jazz'n'bass track, at least you reminded me of that, another great track. Alex Reece and London Elektricity are also up that street, Jazz'n'Bass Street you could call it, there's a whole street of them.
Classic... I once had to proof to Dynamite MC and D Bridge ( Bad Company) that i´m worthy taking over the mic at a big festival in Austria. I left comments on here months and months ago saying to react to old dnb tunes and it's great to see you start to do it but I hope you will look at many more I love drum and bass and Mampi Swift the one, Pascal serious sounds, Bad Company the nine,DJ Krust warhead and the warhead 2000 remix would be a good start, that is just a few proper rave tunes it would be great if you could check out some old live sets because that's what the whole point of jungle drum and bass is about there's really no point in just picking out a couple of old dnb tunes like zinc ready or not remix or roni size brown paper bag and listening to and analysing them all the way through because they weren't made for that , they were made to mix live on a big loud sound system and to be played for the people who were there ,at that time dnb was purely underground and so special I would love to see you really delve into this alot more ,I love watching your videos ❤
Liked your comment on dnd trying out sifferent sounds and genres. Its so true, sampling was huge in its early days, so many different drum patterns and techniques, poly rhythms and vocals. Compare that to a house song that is 99% of the time just a 4x4 beat all the way through
Dnb/jungle was the most samples heavy genre other than hip hop at the time. The music was invented by the turntablists mixing sped up breaks with reggae baselines.
Now I remember why I stopped listening to drum and bass in the car 😂😡why does my foot always have to get so damn heavy. Oh well that’s the first time I’ve been done for speeding since I last listened to drum and wit the car 😂🤣😂
The best band ive ever seen live was Roni Size Reprazent back in the year he won the Mercery Prize. They where headlining on Sunday night at a festival in Bristol. The whole crowd had been going all weekend and most were fading fast. They Reprazent came on stage and everybody went completely nuts. It was wild.
Another childhood classic. Crazy that dnb never hit USA. Glad you guys get to experience decade old DNB classics for first time. Get em coming. You have such a fun journey ahead. Then you have also Jungle that is massive.
Always wondered why Jungle/DNB never took off in the States. Techno too, for that matter. They can’t seem to see past hip hop, which was neutered and turned into clown music.

@@wess6433 - Yeh man, first time I went to NYC in 97 all the records shops were crazy for DnB. Everything was kinda in reverse; we were a bunch of London lads digging crates for Detroit Techno, Chicago House & old skool HipHop and everyone there wanted to know about all the stuff coming out of London & Bristol at the time. The music was so much more of a melting pot back then. Shout out to Sonic Groove, Liquid Sky, A1, Fat Beats and so many others........ Good times.
Have a look into Adam F especially his work that he did with some of the biggest names in hip hop back in the 00's. I don't think any UK Drum and Bass Producer did this before him.
I use to live two doors away from Roni in the mid 90s in Cotham , Bristol. He came to some of our house parties. It was peak time in Bristol for Portishead, Roni Size, Tricky, Massive Attack etc. good times. Home of drum and Bass, Bristol continues to influence this scene even today with several new artists coming from Bristol . Born on road etc Also look for DJ Krust
Brown paper bag was one of the first DnB tracks that I ever heard, absolute game changer for me. I have since had the privilege of featuring him on the lineup for event promo artwork that I have designed.
I was at the Reprezent album gig in Manchester Academy back in 2000 ... Awesome. Life long lover of DnB... I'm an old man now. The DnB scene in the late 90's early 2000's was the best. Messy as... Northwest UK... Sophonic, Metropolis, X... It was so tight-knit back then. A real sense of community, supporting the UK DnB scene before it really exploded and became accepted and much more than a niche / underground style of 'dance' music.
As someone who was there in the heart of Jungle/Drum and Bass back in the 90's it's great to see you discovering this banger . Hardly hidden though i think Ronnie Size won a mercury prize for it . Please check out Reinforced Records from London . Tek 9, 4 Hero, Tom & Jerry etc.

Guys talking about the evolution of jungle and dnb, there are many mix cds and quite a few documentaries out there that explain history but not one that really covers the whole 30 years. We need a 'Golden Age of DNB " docuseries. I'll send you some info on historical mixes and videos etc.

I remember seeing Roni size at the Que back in 99. Planet V night. I still get goosebumps just thinking about that night. It lives, the bass is the heartbeat that it gives When we apply the brakes, there'll be no skids Just more elements to consider as we glide Dimensions and the measurements and the evidence you will find Change it, rearrange it so it's regularly updated Hits from every angle so expect the unexpected Represent the fusion of the mind and stay connected The starboard is presented, the slice of the market's been indented Delivering the style we give you so that means a mention In your direction is the bearing that we aimed ascension Instead the way the floor the stunner made a re-invention And then you get your money's worth before you've even sensed it Make you bigger for bigger for the whole nation Send it down to one and all with no discrimination Like a safe with 50 locks, there's many combination No matter which way that you turn you reach the same destination The fullness of the spectrum, 360 keep it circling Deep inside the flow is where it's working it Underneath, submerging it, time to make it go deeper Way past the point that blows holes in your speaker Under and over to get over and under First you get the lightning and then you get the thunder The sound is the music and the music is the feature
You need to dig deeper... LTJ Bukem, Aphrodite, Ganja Kru, BIG BUD,... listen to 'Westside Blues', by Intense, with the late MC CONRAD on vocals. You have a wonderful journey ahead of you 😊
There were a very few US artist back in the day that recognised the UK d&b scene per-se back then but the ones you know are Dr Dre, KRS One and Timabaland ... RZA also was onboard but the huge one that dropped is when KRS One did Digital with Goldie ... that you should check out if you haven't ... that is pure NYC and London just back to back
It was a ‘97 vibe in the uk dnb scene. Another album that came out in the same year was Adam F’s Colours. And a stand out track named Circles infused jazz and actually had been playing on dance floors from around ‘95. He also won a MOBO award for the album. His early work is criminally underrated, and was far more musical and experimental in my opinion than Roni’s. But don’t get me wrong, Roni is great and this track is one of the all time classics.

You know this.
Same
it started in the late 80s really, but this era in the UK (kinda early to mid/late 1990s) was really heavily Jazz influenced, so we had loads of labels like Mo Wax, Acid Jazz, Soul Jazz Records springing up, and we had all different kinds of fusions with Jazz, Hip Hop/trip hop and Electronica, Drum and Bass, House. . . so we had some pretty big artists come out of that like the two you mentioned here Jamiroquai, Reprazent, also Gilles Peterson founded Acid Jazz records in the late 80s and that had quite a big impact as it brought a lot of genuine Jazz artists into more mainstream musical styles, I think he was kinda doing like Mancusos loft parties in the US did for disco and jazz artists like Vincent Montana Jr, in the late 70S thru the 80S etc
Bristol had a huge DNB scene with amazing nights at Ruffneck Ting plus other djs Die, Dazee.
For about six months in 97, it looked like drum n bass was going to take over the world. Even the BBC was using it for their links.
That kind of thing is what killed it let's be honest!
It took over my life... to this very day. I can't see it changing. Listen to Golden Brown by Dave Brubeck
It has taken over. You hear so many tunes in the radio that are drum and bass or use drum and bass beats. Hell, even sporting events and walkouts to fights use dnb. It's so much more widely accepted.
BBC2 got Roni into Abbey road and they played a whole live set with the band… Unbelievably sick, I’ve got it on VHS somewhere. No VHS player though 😂
You should check out the godfather and innovator of Drum Bass. Goldie.
Terminator is still one of the all time classics from Goldie, never get tired of hearing it
@@wayneedge6905 now there’s a tune
Jamiroquai "Do you know where you're coming from" was the early jazz'n'bass track, at least you reminded me of that, another great track. Alex Reece and London Elektricity are also up that street, Jazz'n'Bass Street you could call it, there's a whole street of them.
Roni Size was featuring at a festival in my home town the other week lol
Roni size is a d&b legend
Classic... I once had to proof to Dynamite MC and D Bridge ( Bad Company) that i´m worthy taking over the mic at a big festival in Austria. One of the best Moments ofr my life.. shaking hands with Dynamite and then hosting the main D&B stage for 3 hours ( DJs playing: D Bridge, Total Science and Dylan) 🙂🙃🙂🙃🙂

I used to go to the free New Year’s Eve gig in Bristol outside having it up to these guys.
Compare that to a house song that is 99% of the time just a 4x4 beat all the way through
Sounds strange without skiba, shabba, hyper , det etc spraying bars over it.
Hyper D and Trigger together just smashed it!
Big hit back in the UK in 1997. The 90s music underground scene had everything. Good times.
Classic track from back in the day.
Try "BACK TO REALITY" RMS
for a bit of public enemy and others sampled into up to date jungle.
Yes boys Roni is pronounced Ronny. 😂
Thanks ✌️🍻
Dnb/jungle was the most samples heavy genre other than hip hop at the time. The music was invented by the turntablists mixing sped up breaks with reggae baselines.
Do you remember Hardcore? Always started with a Jungle break and then turned into absolute garbage? 😂
Thing with uk we never really advertise. If it's out there its out then it makes the music scene. Becomes a trend
Now I remember why I stopped listening to drum and bass in the car 😂😡why does my foot always have to get so damn heavy. Oh well that’s the first time I’ve been done for speeding since I last listened to drum and wit the car 😂🤣😂
,
😂🤌
@@jakesolo2872 Interestingly enough there is a EDM genres from us from like "Detroit techno" and "Chicago house" and also "electro" that was popular among b-boys. I think this goes to show what happens when record labels are dominating a domestic market. mp3 first and then music/videostreaming really opens up the world.
it took off just fine in the US and we have had a healthy scene for 30 years all across the country. it was never commercially viable in the US (except for music beds in commercials and late night MTV) but that's fine. we lived it and loved it all the same.
@@jakesolo2872 the size of the US and a lack of exposure on radio. none of these media corporations were taking a chance to play reprazent/bukem/goldie during drive time on the radio. millions still built and maintain a healthy US dnb scene even without that support

Guys you should watch Roni Size and represent live at Maide vale studios. It is 🔥
Brown paper bag was one of the first DnB tracks that I ever heard, absolute game changer for me. I have since had the privilege of featuring him on the lineup for event promo artwork that I have designed.
Saw Roni do this track live in Oxford at the Valve Soundsystem. I absolutely lost it.
Saw a Roni Size DJ set a month ago at a festival...really awesome
Man this takes me back to my Uni days, midweek student night at Ministry of Sound and then a few years later Fridays at Fabric Live.
Jazz DNB is - or was - a whole sub genre in itself and I used to listen to it a lot mid 90s to early 00s.
Takes me back, guys! Have you listened to any 808 state or Adam F?
As someone who was there in the heart of Jungle/Drum and Bass back in the 90's it's great to see you discovering this banger . Hardly hidden though i think Ronnie Size won a mercury prize for it . Please check out Reinforced Records from London . Tek 9, 4 Hero, Tom & Jerry etc.
The Photek remix is amazing as well

Not quite a hidden gem in the UK, their album won the Mercury Music Prize in 97, so this was a pretty well known track.
COURT - Theres fucking tonnes of jazzy dnb!! You have to listen to
4 Hero - Two Pages
So so far ahead of its time.
Seminal album by pioneers who taught even Goldie.
Fellas, this track was everything back in 97. The album, New Forms is a masterpiece and won the prestigious Mercury Music Prize that year. It's a legendary track. You should check out more 90s dnb and jungle. Fair play
That looks like an old Toronto streetcar at 0:18 Edit: yes, this is filmed in Toronto. This is Chinatown, on Dundas east of Spadina. This parking entrance is still there today.
So many memories of this song and album, New Forms, from back in the day. Having it play in the background whilst me and the boys blazed, playing Tekken on a PS1. Good times.
Exactly the same as me.
Guys talking about the evolution of jungle and dnb, there are many mix cds and quite a few documentaries out there that explain history but not one that really covers the whole 30 years. We need a 'Golden Age of DNB " docuseries.
I'll send you some info on historical mixes and videos etc.
"Roni Size & Reprazent, Brown Paper Bag, live for Radio One 1997 " is a great version of this live with upright bass, real drums, live vocals
That was the Bristol vibe, being able to blend, Soul, Dub, Jungle, Reggea, Hiphop seamlessly. You should also check out Smith & Mighty, More Rockers, and the Rest off those Bristol guys.
Guys.....are u aware that this is 28 years old????? Released back in 1996!!!! 😂 Roni (Ronny) and Reprezent were one of the first DnB crews to bring it live to people.....ground breaking back then!
It really was, it opened my eyes to a different genre.
There was a special night dedicated to Drum N Bass on BBC 2 in the 90s. The Band had a special performance.
Hyped to see people discovering and enjoying jungle/d&b for the first time. It’s been the dominant musical force in my life for 30+ years.
I remember seeing Roni size at the Que back in 99. Planet V night. I still get goosebumps just thinking about that night.
It lives, the bass is the heartbeat that it gives
When we apply the brakes, there'll be no skids
Just more elements to consider as we glide
Dimensions and the measurements and the evidence you will find
Change it, rearrange it so it's regularly updated
Hits from every angle so expect the unexpected
Represent the fusion of the mind and stay connected
The starboard is presented, the slice of the market's been indented
Delivering the style we give you so that means a mention
In your direction is the bearing that we aimed ascension
Instead the way the floor the stunner made a re-invention
And then you get your money's worth before you've even sensed it
Make you bigger for bigger for the whole nation
Send it down to one and all with no discrimination
Like a safe with 50 locks, there's many combination
No matter which way that you turn you reach the same destination
The fullness of the spectrum, 360 keep it circling
Deep inside the flow is where it's working it
Underneath, submerging it, time to make it go deeper
Way past the point that blows holes in your speaker
Under and over to get over and under
First you get the lightning and then you get the thunder
The sound is the music and the music is the feature
You need to dig deeper... LTJ Bukem, Aphrodite, Ganja Kru, BIG BUD,... listen to 'Westside Blues', by Intense, with the late MC CONRAD on vocals. You have a wonderful journey ahead of you 😊
Chester P the Authorship has it got enough for a reaction yet . Its his masterpiece
You should check out the Roni Size and Method Man track called Ghetto. Celebrity
tonked off my face to this many nights as a yoot. Big Up!
I like the B side also 'The Western' cowboy vibes
So dope you checked this one and are interested in the evolution of Jungle and DnB.
Roni Size is amazing. Has made songs with lots of US Rappers aswell. Cypress Hill, Method Man, Red Man defo worth a listen
When I was like 19 I rented a room off the guy who played bass with Reprazent... creator of this amazing double bass riff!
Was he with Portershed or was that the drummer?
@@neverman3398 He's been involved with a lot of the Bristol scene but not Portishead I don't think.
Bristol Crew being represented.
That whole album is so good
Finally the best drum n bass comes from my town bristol roni is a legend xxx
Uk bristol
There were a very few US artist back in the day that recognised the UK d&b scene per-se back then but the ones you know are Dr Dre, KRS One and Timabaland ... RZA also was onboard but the huge one that dropped is when KRS One did Digital with Goldie ... that you should check out if you haven't ... that is pure NYC and London just back to back
Roni was huge back in the day this tune was 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
We British aren’t good at many things but we are good at swearing and raving
And inventing most of the technology used around the world to this day.
Drum n bass is a mix of all genres. It can be hectic, heavy and screwface or chilled, jazzy and soulful. Take your pick.
It's got you covered either way.
The most expansive genre of music imo. (of course I'm biased 😂)
Also check out Brazilian Drum n Bass called Sambass. Those Brazilian boys have it large. Dj Patife, Drummajick and DJ Marky.
Had this ok vinyl back in the day. A definite feature of my dnb sets back then. Magic times

Yes guys this is literally the guy I mentioned to you the other day check him out playing this live WOW. Roni size, dj krust, and DJ zinc are all from Bristol Uk. Classic analogue jungle drum n bass . 90 s
Zinc not, hes a Londoner
Drum & Bass is the only genre of music that still sounds fresh to me. So diverse and dynamic. The cool thing about the Roni Size Reprazent project was the use of live instruments. They toured as a drum & bass band. I hope you check out some LTJ Bukem too. He was fully on the drum & bass & jazz vibes. Ed Rush & Optical's Wormhole is dope too, to check out some neurofunk. I can't wait until you guys start getting into speed garage and 2-step. Cheers fellas 🍻
This was the first DnB track I ever heard… I was about 14!
What you want is represent .share the fall grooveriders jeep remix !!! Saw roni size dj at Glastonbury in 1999 and it was the first track he played in his dj set !!! Then later that evening represent played live with the full band / drum machines and the female vocalist and mc dynamite on the mc !!! I think the album that this track features from had been out 1 year and they performed the whole album ! It was a very special moment that I feel blessed to have witnessed!!!!!
