- Have you heard about how awesome RetroArch is for Retro Gaming, but are intimidated by it's robust interface? Fear not, my friends! In this RetroArch easy setup guide designed just for beginners we'll get you playing your games in no time!
In this updated RetroArch starter guide for 2023 we cover 3 easy steps to get RetroArch setup on your PC:
1) Downloading and installing Retroarch.
2) Installing RetroArch cores or emulators.
3) Adding playlists to RetroArch, which allows us to do the most important part - access and play our retro games!

@@derekt8731 Sure, happy to help. It could be a number of things. Can you give me a bit more detail about what happens when you try to load a Playstation game? Does RetroArch crash? Do you get a black screen? Also, just some quick things to check: make sure you have a Playstation BIOS in the system folder in Retroarch, it will have a name like "scph5001.bin" or something similar. The file type of your roms can sometimes be at issue too, I recommend either .chd or .pbp format as opposed to .bin and .cue as they are a bit easier to work with and tend to cause less problems.

I stumbled across your videos and I’m really enjoying them, great work! Like both of you, I have experience with Retroarch via retro gaming OS’s like Batocera & Recalbox. Since I’m new to retro gaming, trying to wrap my head around the components. Is it accurate to say that Batocera, Recalbox, & Launchbox are the friendly front end GUI experience and Retroarch is the backbone of how this all works? Very much still in the learning phase, so please feel free to educate me 🙂

It is accurate to say that Launchbox is a frontend and RetroArch the backbone, keep in mind though that many frontends can work with many different emulators, not just the ones in RetroArch.
Batocera and Recalbox are just slightly different as they are Linux-based distributions specifically designed for Retro gaming. They include both the frontend, which is usually EmulationStation, and the emulators through RetroArch. So a program like Launchbox is just the frontend, whereas Batocera and Recalbox are the whole package, frontend and emulators.

Hi great vid, only problem im having is when you go to add a new folder you have a tab that says "emulators" and you lcikc on that to get to your Sega core. When i go to add a new folder i dont have the same "emulators" tab at the top to select my nintendo core. Any answers? Just downloaded today so its most up to date
Can you play retro arch gaming emulator offline, multiplay, install mods to some games, and back up data where you can continue your existing data with your gaming process on other devices?

I've got a super console x2 and I've messed up my controls inside retroarch. Using my pc what folder do i need to delete clear etc to reset my controls.
The Intellivision emulator in Recalbox is FreeIntv version 1.1, and it does not enable the virtual keyboard (keypad) that is mandatory to select 1 or 2 players (most games). This problem no longer occurs in Retroarch (it uses version 1.2 of the FreeIntv emulator) and many Retropie users also do not have this problem of missing virtual keyboard (Retropie uses the JzIntv emulator). So I ask: how can I add the latest version of FreeIntv and/or JzIntv to Recalbox?
Unfortunately, I don't have experience with either Recalbox or the FreeIntv core. The only thing I can think of trying is to see if Recalbox allows you to update the RetroArch cores using the Core Downloader menu in RetroArch

Which version of RetroArch are you using? Some versions don't have all of the features that the Windows version does. If your on Windows, I recommend grabbing RetroArch directly from the platforms download page: www.retroarch.com/?page=platforms
When i try to open retroarch it says im missing a bunch of things. It tells me to reinstall it so i do and it still doesnt work. Is there a fix?
Hi it works very well but I've been having trouble with exclusively the psp emulator I wanted to play final fantasy 3 and 4 with it but as soon as it hits the loading screen it freezes and the screen turns white it works fine with final fantasy crisis core do you know what is going on?
Thanks for the comment! I don't really use the PPSSPP core in RetroArch anymore because I was running into performance issues with games similar to what you describe. The standalone emulator is much more stable at this point for PSP games. Unfortunately, RetroArch doesn't do as well emulating some of the more modern consoles (PSP, 3DS, Dolphin, PS2), so for those I usually just use the standalone emulators.

How should I make the folder I want to use?
If I have games in the ROMS folder of SD1 and more games in ROMS on SD2 which ones are displayed after booting GarlicOS ?
Good question. I don't know the answer as I've never tried that setup. Although I do believe it will only show one or the other and not both.
hey can you show how to organize your roms i should of did this from the start but i went and got all the roms i wanted but there all together sadly and none are organized for each system is there a way i can do this in a program to do it for me make its own folders and stuff for each game so i know which system there for?
You can a program called LaunchBox. It's an emulator frontend and when you import your games it will ask you what each individual system they are for and then separate them out into folders for each system.

I followed these steps and when I create a playlist the games don't pop up in the folder
That could be because when you select "Add Folder" you just need to point RetroArch to the folder where your games are stored, so you won't see the games in the folder window. Alternatively you can select "Add File(s)..." and when you do that you should see your games in the folder and you can select them all to add to the playlist. Hope that helps :)

Hi did u ever get an answer? I can't find this folder myself and I have a console and need to reset x360 controls inside the program. I can't access anything, controls completely screwed up.
Why does the music sound like garbled mess?
I loaded sonic or desert strike.
Are you playing on a PC? You could try changing the audio driver by going to Settings>Drivers>Audio. Xaudio is the default but you might try changing to dsound and see if that helps.
Is a problem if I extract whit winrar?
WinRAR should be fine 👍

Do you mean the folder where RetroArch stores the downloaded cores? If that's the case, by default it should be in "RetroArch\cores"
But what website do you down the roms ?

No offense to you this is a great video very thorough to get you through the basics which is a laughable f****** joke cuz there are no basics with retro arts that's why it's garbage but the simple fact is I had three different people try just for the hell of it they're not very computer savvy I threw them down in front of a machine followed your video to a tea all three will not load content big f****** surprise
F*** retroarch now I'm a pretty computer savvy person but I remember when I wasn't so savvy and this thing is ridiculously over-complicated at every angle at any angle there is no simple user setup and that is pathetic for what this thing is actually supposed to do organize your emulators and organize your rom so that is all this is supposed to do and this is more complicated than reprogram your own version of Windows at the end of the day it don't look any better than any other crappy ass emulator I've ever had like ssf for Saturn now don't get me wrong I'm like any other computer nerd I want to be able to mess with shaders and pixels and all kinds of other stuff but there is no excuse on any part of this planet that says that this thing she should not be able to load a damn bias and an emulator and go and you cannot do that I have has several friends over the years yes I'm one of those guys who picked this up like 5:00 plus years ago screwed with it for about 30 seconds and said this thing is garbage and never looked back and glad I never did I'm actually just here trying to help out a friend but it looks like the best thing for me to do is put retroarch out of business and just program my own little front end because this is pathetic I'm back to those friends I was discussing I've watched this thing installed several times over the last half decade or more and not one time have I ever seen someone install it load an emu and a bias and go play a game never they've always had to sit around for sometimes hours or days fighting this thing to do nothing to run a game that a console with 25 megahertz and 4th I'll be surprised if we could actually load pictures retro archers garbage stay away stay away
