I've never seen a American steam engine pulling that many cars before! Usually American steam engines are pulling just a few cars, moving rather slow and with a diesel engine. Impressive engine and good video shooting! Well done.

N&W built their own in house locomotives and the ones they built were some of the most powerful steam locomotives put into service on American rails. The J class passenger engines were no exception. Enough horsepower to run comfortably at 100 MPH and plenty enough tractive effort to dig into a grade.

Usually the diesel locomotives are there for better control of breaking and electrical power for the passengers, not actually pulling the train

Great loco, but the only bit worth watching was from the car following alongside. That bit was awesome. Thanks

I wish they’d organized the consist better
N&W cars at front and then organize by road name and so on

It would be nice, yes. But the idea was to group all the cars together by class. Coaches together, first class and dome cars together, and so on. Makes more logical sense that way.

Incomplete combustion. There's a lot of energy in that soot, if it was burned and used.

There were a lot of full size cars. I think it was a bit over overloaded and pulling up a steep incline and in that one location, from a standing stop on a hill.

If they switch it to burning a different fuel it would make less smoke
