The 1.4 with IS lets you use a cheaper RF body without IBIS, like the R8 or R10. And since an EF to RF adapter must be used, get the adapter that takes drop-in filters and ND or CPL's can be used with ease. Allowing the R10's max 1/4000 shutter speed to be adequate in bright, full sun wide open at f1.4. I live in sunny El Paso, TX.
The 85 1.8 w as one of my first lenses and I loved it. But it doesn't compare to the 1.4. Not only is 1.4 brighter, it has optical stabilization and no more color fringing. The fringing with the 😂1.8 was the clear sign that I need to upgrade even though you can get gorgeous images with the 1.8
@@leahgdavies totally agree. TH-cam makes it hard to tell because it's the great equalizer, making all images conform to TH-cam's compression algorithm. at least YT is not as bad as FB or IG with destroying photos.
I thought the 1.8 produced some really nice images, crisp & detailed. The 1.4L produced truly outstanding images, yes there was a difference. BUT I can get a second user 1.8 for £250 against £1100 for the 1.4L. For me I think the 1.8 wins.
The 85 1.8 seems to have a slight green cast. It’s like the colour is being affected by the surrounding grass or something. The 1.4 is definitively warmer.
I have 85mm and rarely use it. Everytime I put it on my cam, I wish it had sharper. Background bokeh is so pleasing but honestly I prefer 135mm or 70-200mm for background compression.
Nice job. Would be nice to keep the comparison images side by side with roughly the same size head. It’s not easy to compare when the head on one is way bigger than head on other image. But keep it up.
Thank you for the honest feedback I really appreciate it! Definitely something I noticed when editing and knew I needed to make sure they matched up better for the next time, thanks!
I have the R6 with 85mm f1.8 on the EFtoRF adapter. The AF speed is amazing for this combo. Way better that the XF56 on my XT3. The adapter doesn't degrade the quality since it doesn't have any element that degrade the light coming thru the lens to your sensor.
Great video, Leah! Nicely done. Only one thing It was slightly difficult to assess due to the slight differences in the portraits. However I really could not see much of a difference. I did see a larger difference in the third pose, and when standing further back, the subject did not stand out from the background as much as the 1.4
im actually looking for a cheap wedding/portrait lens for my canon 6dmkii and i was looking at this one, thanks for the best review so far on this lens
Thanks for making this comparison. I’d say for a beginner in photography definitely 1.8 is the way to go. Once there’s a decent budget not doubt to throw more money for better images. Btw Both of you gorgeous 🔥🔥
If wish I could put million likes to both of you ! The model is extraordinary... so live positive and full of natural beauty and joy. After this video usual "cool magazine look photo sessions" look lifeless to me. The bokeh on 85 1.4 was soooo gentle and aery... 1.8 was significantly worse in this regard. Thank you for these awesome 7 minutes ! Hope to see more from you... and subscribed.
Great shots. Lovely model with magical light! Getting my first mirrorless full frame camera tomorrow united with my 85mm f/1.4. I’m a bit excited to be honest… my current 6D mark II is sometimes not able to handle the 1.4 😅 love to get everything out of this beautiful lens. Thanks for the great comparison! Having great ideas and perspectives both lenses create magical stuff 😍
What do you mean not able to handle the 1,4? I have 6d mark 2, and want to choose my first 85mm (had 50, and now use sigma 35 art) Mb you can recommend for this body the best one, thanx
why do I need to set the shutter for 1/800 of a second? in good weather, 1/320 of a second is enough for any movement. why set the iso value to 250. sunny day, good iso light is not needed at all..
For me…the IS feature of the 1.4 is all important. I have shaky hands anyway and getting shakier as I age. I’m shopping for a mint used copy. Wish me luck.
I upgraded from the 1.8 last fall to the 1.4 and don’t use my 1.8 at all anymore. Making this video actually made me realize i maybe didn’t need to push to upgrade so soon, but i do really love my 1.4!
I think the differences will be more pronounced when your background is closer to the subject and or when you increase the distance between the photographer and the subject. Try full body portraits, for example and you'll see. Great shots, excellent video thanx
1. You didn't post an Instagram link to your model 2. You didn't give your opinion as to which was the better lens 3. Otherwise it's an excellent video!
@@leahgdavies thank you , i want buy this camera. İm usually shot real estate video and sometimes event. I think r6 is enough for me.What do you think ?
Actually just bought an 85mm f1.8 yesterday and after watching this video, once again you just confirmed I made the correct choice. How is picture quality for bigger scenes? And what camera did you use?
Hi, noticed u have a cable attached and mentioned it connected to your ipad, are you viewing the images in realtime on the ipad? If so how does this work? Is an app needed and what cable is being used, new to this like the idea of previewing pics on a better screen
Yes! It lets you tether your camera to your ipad. It's an app called cascable and i'm using a usb c to usb c cable I got on amazon! I also talk more about this in another video I made th-cam.com/video/Nwji5PEYwcw/w-d-xo.html
I have a cheapef 85 mm f1.8 lens , but i think ef 85 f1.4 background blur is smoother in my humble opinion , but if i 'm wrong of course there will be difference no one is dumb here to waste money
This was great it’s crazy because I just started using my 85mm 1.8 this year Paired with the EOS R I get great Images I see no need to upgrade at the moment however I do have my eye on the R6 the eye auto focus and in-body stabilization 🤤
The R6 is fantastic but I think you would get better results upgrading the lens first, either the ef 1.4 or the rf 1.2 or rf 2.0. While the eos r isn't a speed demon like the R6 it does have things like eye af and the eye af has gotten better with firmware updates. The noise on the R6 is a little better and dynamic range is better but even then I think you would notice better results with a better lens. Unless the r frustrates you because a big part of enjoying photography is the shooting experience. I can't imagine using anything but my r5. It's the perfect camera imo
Just subbed I been wanting a great 85mm.. I had been phasing out my EF lenses but that $2700 RF 85 1.2 is a bit hard to swallow atm. So I'm watching reviews. It looks like the EF 85mm 1.4L will be my choice.
I shoot with a 90D and this video was a Godsend! Definitely gonna shoot for the 1.4! Gave you a follow on my non roller coaster photography page as well! God bless you and keep up the good work!
that's an interesting way of shooting with the AF. I would use more focus points if I would be using the tracking AF over center focusing. The issue with the 1.4, is just like the 1.2, you are really limiting the amount of what would be in focus. I would set them closer to 2.8 and only using the wider aperture when light is super low. Either way, you both are smoking hot.
Girls, I am a very old man for you. That's why I don't flirt. You are very beautiful and gifted girls. I liked your performance. I've used both lenses and I can tell for sure. f1,4 is very heavy, but the side is softer, they have the same sharpness. I have experience using f1.8 in winter, full-length portraits in the snow in the park, very bright colors on children's clothes and lots of details, sparks of joy in their eyes, snowflakes on scarves and mittens. I wish you Happiness and success.
Please make it clear these are EF lenses. I feel very confusing watching in 2022 as most ppl are looking for RF lenses. Please mark EF in your title if you're testing EF ones.
