I went to school with Tom and he did indeed always talk like this. He had some great lines too. I remember admiring some posh building with him on a school trip and he just goes “yes, very nice. I’ll take it”.

It must be both incredible and incredulous for Tom to finally have someone with whom he can share his old insecurities as well as his past life knowing there will be no judgement or put-down. Romesh is a sincere and trustworthy friend with whom Tom can be honest. Together they can see and speak the humour necessary to be so open. What a wonderful way to portray friendship.

I felt like this growing up. My mum insisted my sisters and I spoke the Queen's English; we were never allowed to drop our Ts and Hs! Whenever I told her that people in school told me I talk posh, her response was always "Well they don't know how to talk properly!"

My mom did the same with me and my siblings, and we grew up in Queens, NY. Once in a while, someone would legitimately think I was British. That would always confuse me, because my accent wasn't regional NYC, but it certainly wasn't British, either.

I so relate to this. My Dad had an upper-middle class upbringing and still talks like that even though we are barely middle class as a family now, and I picked up that 'posh accent'. In Yorkshire. In one of the most working class schools. The kids thought I was putting it on. That's just how my voice is...

I still do that at parties and dinners now. And I’m in my forties. I can’t abide the socializing / small talk so I’ll just find my way to the kitchen to do the washing up and tidying.
If it’s a particularly tedious and lengthy party I’ll have the place ship shape by the end of the evening, everything put away, kitchen sanitized, and all the rubbish sorted into recycling boxes and general waste sacks. The works.

  • @violetskies14

I'm from Nottingham and compared to the people around me I speak quite "posh" just because my grandma who helped raise me insisted I use "proper English" and on top of that I'm physically disabled and I now know autistic but at the time I just thought I was awkward but luckily I was born in 2000 and by the time I was in senior school it felt like people were beginning to realise oh no we shouldn't bully the girl in the wheelchair. So a few older boys did but the people in my year were always pretty nice to me even when I came out no one really said much other than to ask me if it was true I was a lesbian. But I was still an outsider. I never felt like I fit in and I didn't so I get what he's saying here. It's tough when others look at you and know you're different and kinda exclude you for it even when it's not from cruelty.

And he really hams up the camp when he gets going. Now I learnt he and Rob Beckett were at the same school (different years I believe) so there must be something in the water there because their both funny.

Omg i was always the one in the kitchen cleaning up keeping their pets company if their parents were home id go join them and have a lovely time a cuppa and antiques roadshow or something anti teenager 😂😂😂 even as an introvert when i forced myself to go out with friends i was introverting so hard i was basically doing what i would have done at home anyway. Oh and of course id usually be the bag minder the drinks watcher the one making sure my friends were all safe and not getting into trouble confiscating phones and giving parents check ins 😂😂😂 all the parents loved me and their kid which was almost always only an aquantince or friend of a friend often would end up inviting me over or to other smaller gatherings because their parents approved or theyd heard about me from their parents or grandparents or siblings whod id become basically instant friends with and theyd suddenly be friends with me too often better friends with me than the mutual friend of ours who id come as more of a plus one with or wed go from friendly classmates to solid friends instantaneously. Cant say it was the usual highschool experience but im glad i made the most of the so called expected normal teen things by still being me and finding a way to have a less horrific time than i would pretending to or forcing myself to stand around drink 'dance' etc.

Was called the school chav because I spoke and dressed a certain way (Dropping the odd t mid sentence, clothes from JD sport - minor stuff really). However all my friends from outside of school would refer to me as the posh boy because of the school I went to.
