You have to keep in mind that Metallica got hugely popular without music videos. The first video they made was “One” which was on the album before this one (…and Justice for All.) This album (The black album) was when they started making music videos and recording everything. So, to a lot of Metallica fans this was a cool behind the scenes look at the mythic Metallica, and made them look like regular people. I thought it was really cool. As well, this is the album where Kirk Hammett (the lead guitarist) started getting really into Blues. So, a lot of the songs on this album had a blues feel to it. Also, the downfall of the trash band Metallica. Many consider this album, or …And Justice for All, their last good album. Personally, I think they are still a great band, but not the same band.

And this video was made from excerpts from the two-part 4 hour rockumentary A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica which came out a few months later, which gave us an even better look into the band that we hadn't seen before...then we got Some Kind of Monster and though it was an exceptional documentary, we got to see a whole other side of the band that maybe we would have prefer not to have seen.

James Hetfield was nervous bringing this song to the band because of like you said how different it is, but the other guys were very supportive of James showing this more "vulnerable" side, it took guts to release such a song at the time for the band.

Yup, every time I have it on in the car I have to crank the volume to near max just as the solo kicks in, same with the solo for unforgiven and similarly the solo in 'in bloom' by nirvana. The contrast to the rest of the songs and the simplicity of those solos are just amazing.

You cannot believe how emotional this song can be until you and 50000 other people are singing to it... It is something special that you just cannot understand until you've been there yourself. I don't know what it is about Metallica, but they can have any opening act and the moment these guys step on the stage the whole venue is charged up with this energy. When "Ecstasy of Gold" hits the first two notes, things start going crazy and wild and you can feel the energy just coarsing through your entire body. It is an otherworldly experience and something unbelievable! It is Metallica.
And you are correct in the genre assessment. Metal music is the classical music of today. They share a lot of the elements between the old masters and how metal songs are put together. There is no formula for this madness, it just is...
The beautiful thing about Metallica is that they make the best songs they can and don't do things that are overly technical or really hard to pull off unless it fits the song... Kirk has said that he basically never plays the solos live like he did on the album versions. There are few so iconic that he has to, but usually he is giving you something new every time. And the snot nosed kids still cannot believe that people come out and listen to them. They are enjoying the audience about as much as the audience is enjoying them. Like James has said this is outsider music...

This song is a tool that will get me out of every depression. That climax at the end of the song always wipes away my tears and kicks me in the ass to get me up and keep fighting. Hetfield wrote this song for a girl he missed on tour, but for about 20 years it has been a song about fans and the band's perception of them. In one of the interviews, James Hetfield said: I was very ashamed to show this composition to the guys in the band. You understand hevy metal - tough guys, but the bigger the heart, the bigger the armor it hides behind. He showed this song to Lars (drummer) and he and the producer said it was great and should be on the album. Metallica plays this song at every concert and on every tour

I think this song also served them later in their careers when they played some of their songs with a full orchestra, making some of their songs even more haunting. I think they were also very surprised by how received this song became when it was released as a single.

These guys are remarkable and they have so many songs that I find one listening to that ends up being on my big list of great music. Im always impressed how well they synchronize and seem to alway be attached and have the cleanest heavy music of any group ever. The technical stuff they do and are awesome solos. They are a true band and their hard work pays off! I just wished I had discovered music that wasnt played on the radio so much that I had them sterotyped as just heavey metal. I picked up some guitars and amps and started playing again because of Metallica. Take a look at Bleed Me, Sanitarium, Hero of the Day

The whole "Black Album" has a different vibe from their previous releases but set a precedent for their future records for some time. They trimmed run times down, simplified the delivery, and made an overall more accessible record for the masses. Some of the die hard fans (myself included at the time) were taken by surprise, and some were very critical and dismissive of the record. Personally, while not my favorite, I think it has amazing production, and a lot of memorable songs. Also, I got the record a week early because I had preordered it at a mall, and for the hell of it asked what the progress was on the preorder, and the guy was like "We have it in, let me get it for you," and bam. I saw the band several times live, twice on this tour (including one of the shows that they double headlined with Guns n Roses which was infamous for several reasons), and if there is one thing I will say about Metallica, they definitely deliver. I'm not a big metal guy anymore, but I still feel a certain nostalgia for Metallica.

The black album was a very controversial album in the sense it lost some of their hardcore base but it picked up more in the mainstream non metal heads of the general public. I started way back on their second album "Ride the Lightning" and until the "Black" album there NEVER was a Metallica song played on the radio until this album.. On the Howard Stern Show, Elton John was on via satellite and said this was one the best songs that he ever heard and it actually got James Hatfield choked up to tears with that compliment.

Phil & Sam, you're both right. Headbanging metal fans hated this song (although previous albums had slow/softer songs) and they gained millions of new fans because of this song and "Enter Sandman".
James had this song before the making of this album but he was terrified to show the guys because "it wasn't Metallica". Bob Rock, the producer, told him to show them...the worst thing they can do is say "no". The guys liked it and the rest is history.

It had depth, so I enjoyed it. I really am more a Megadeth guy, but I love Metallica almost as much. They have done at least 3 different versions of this song on albums after this. Maybe more idk. Maybe take a look at a band named Testament with a song called Lost Souls, or Practice What You Preach. Might be right up Phil work out songs lol!!! Awesome reaction guys. I always enjoy your videos. Take care!!! GO BOSTON BRUINS!!! 🤟🍻

Metallica is a brave band, as I call them. Their first album from 1983, was very underground. Next year they signed with a bigger studio and got better equipmen and wrote more complex stuff. They were called sell-outs by the Kill Em All-fans (first album), and this trend continued for each album after that. But Metallica has always done what they wanted in their music. Selling out indicates that you change due to wanting more fame and money. For MEtallica they changed because they listen to different music.

In 2021 Elton John, with Miley Cyrus on lead vocals did a version of Nothing Else Matters for Elton's album The Lockdown Sessions. Metallica with Miley performed it on the Howard Stern Show in September of 2021 and during the show Elton John called in and stated during the interview that in his opinion, Nothing Else Matters is "one of the best songs ever written". In the clip which is on TH-cam, you can see James' stunned reaction. I tend not to disagree with someone like Elton John when it comes to music!

Hey you guys I'm old school I was forgenot to see bands live Mettalica was the best. Check out Mettalica Seattle 1989 considered the best heavy metal concert? Different opinions of course. The song is "for whom the bell tolls" better than the studio version. And "fade to Black" this is awesome you guys. Be cool stay safe.

There's an even softer version of this, it's labeled as the "Elevator Version", but it's jut a more acoustic/orchestral sound - no drums, mostly just guitars and stringed instruments (violins, etc). It's actually quite good.
Jon Oliva (Savatage, Jon Oliva's Pain) also covered it.

Two other videos I think you'll love that are slightly different from their "normal" are from the 1999 S&M concert, specifically The memory remains and No Leaf Clover. Give either of those a try and I think you'll really enjoy the sound.

  • @drewcliff82

It's definitely a love hate relationship not just with this song but with this album. I absolutely love it as i do basically everything they've ever put out but this is the album where they became mainstream with songs like this one, Enter Sandman, Sad But True or Wherever I may Roam. They cut down on the solos and made some more catchy stuff as well as some slower stuff and people that only like metal didnt like that. I'm a fan of all types of music so I still loved it but for many it was an unwelcomed change. You also have those that will simply hate on anything that becomes super popular. Can't wait to hear what you do next from Metallica. I cant remeber if youve done Master of Puppets yet but either that or Battery from the same album would be amazing.

We are talking about an album that sold over 30 million copies! At that time, until the beginning of grunge, metallica became the biggest rock band in the world.
As a previous fan of them it was strange to hear a couple of softer tracks on that album, but I loved them too. There are a lot of great heavyer tracks that compensate. The real delusion for the hardcore fans came with Load and the following albums…
