@@ast8177 The original statement in English is "your secret is safe with me." I won't tell your secret. Usually spoken after someone has confessed a "secret" or has been caught in some sort of embarrassing situation.
Taliesin adds the word "Indifference" which is a lack of care or concern.
"Your secret is safe with my indifference." I won't tell anyone because I don't care what you do.
The bouncing between dramatically serious roleplay and hysterically hilarious roleplay so well is what really makes critical role work- Keyleth and Scanlan crying simultaneously for different reasons across the city is the epitome of it
It genuinely feels like a sitcom. But everything is improv which makes it so impressive
I think the balance between both is important and is what makes it amazing

I came here as I'm up to date with season 2. Interesting to see the difference in scale. The first season is more Avengers whilst season 2 is more The Defenders.
matt blissett i’ve not actually seen it yet, but is that because they’re still a lower level than in this series? so they don’t fight as powerful things?
@@xavier7858 that's part of it, another part of it is more that in C1 they are heroes and know it and embrace it, and most of the characters in C2 don't want to be largely public heroes.
I just love Liam's acting in this one. How Vax closes himself off with the the knowing he is forever changed is phenomenal. Also, Percy's line 'This is an evening of unbridled guilt' is just perfect!
Late the the critical role family, but better late than never.

Liam is exceptional at going really deep in his roleplaying and really leaning into the juicy (very much including the dark) aspects of his characters. He was also going through some rough times IRL during parts of this campaign (health stuff, the loss of his mother, depression) and has talked a lot about how the game helped him process those emotions.

I noticed that immediately. I was surprised he'd even joined the first few sessions after what happened. But he had mentioned in the past that these Critical Role nights were some sort of therapy, and I guess a distraction, too. That moment broke my heart.
@@anna-maria1412 Distraction is almost a necessity the grief can just completely overwhelm you and just shut you down. In my experience my RPGs were some of the only joy I could find after my father died. Being able to leave your world for a few hours have some clear objective to work toward, and maybe having the ability to save someone can really help work through some things. And your right its clear on his face that Liam not just Vax is hurting, Liam is a phenomenal actor a has made a career playing through character trauma but when you have that shared experience of losing someone like that you can kinda just tell.
@@anna-maria1412 In addition to serving as a distraction, RP can be incredibly cathartic. Sometimes it’s easier to allow yourself to shed tears and experience powerful emotions through your character when confronting your own directly is too painful.

My mother's dog likes the taste of beer. If you leave a cup or bottle where she can get at it, she will.

My little Rat Terrier loves Shiner and Dos XX.
Took him to a taco bar and the attendant was abhorred that I would give beer to a dog, so she tries to give my pup a bowl of water.
He sniffed it, looked at her, looked at me, and walked away from the bowl. We all laugh as I turn the bowl over and refill it with a portion of my beer. My pup comes back over and begins lapping up the freshly poured beer.
I swear to God, I have never seen a more legitimately hurt look on a millennial. LMAO!

For anyone who cares HOW I treat my dog: my dog is a healthy 18 lbs at 8 years old, who can safely walk off-leash without supervision, still wears an electric training collar (bc basic animal instincts are a thing), and he takes commands in Russian. He hunts squirrels, opossums, racoons, and he flushes out snakes and rats from under the house on our 10 acre ranch. He loves me to death and this tiny little dog will ignore your yapper of a pitbull but will bite *your* balls off if I raise my voice at you. He cuddles with me under my armpit every night, and he eats a specifically measured amount of Blue Buffalo to keep him at his correct weight. He is punished appropriately and accordingly to the transgression when he's been bad (which is seldom), but also gets treats when he's been good (which is often). And by "treats" I mean he eats deer steaks and ice cream (obv. not choc.), and drinks beer. If you don't like that, IDGAF. Raise your own dog how you see fit, and leave mine alone bc my dog is better trained and more well behaved than your child.
I thoroughly enjoyed the part where Sam (Scanlan) explained how he keeps a smile on his face through all of their hardships. It was an interesting speech that applied to not only his character, but also to real life. I have a lot of respect for people who can keep that mindset.

Am I the only one that cringes during the Emo Vax and Vax/Keyleth dire emotional moments? I wish I didn't, but maybe I just can't get as immersed as a viewer to not help but feel secondhand embarrassment during their deep role play times. When most of their in/out of character demeanors are lighthearted, the moments where Vax and Keyleth get super emo or doom and gloom just feel over-the-top to me..
Don't get me wrong, I'm still emotionally invested in the plot and all the serious stuff that happens. There's just something about their scenes, I can't help it!
@@kaylabridges6055 they're voice actors, they are used to emoting to get a point across. plus, keyleth is socially awkward. this episode is a bit different as liam was going through some personal stuff.
I had to laugh upon Kima calling Allura a "prideful woman".
Kima, who bashed a man's armor in and shoved him onto his back in order to accompany Vox Machina in his stead, chastising *Allura* for her pride.
Introbulus I think that was less about pride, and more about boredom.

*c1 spoilers kinda* Can I just mention how much I love that it’s oooobvious from a player’s/viewer’s perspective that the armour is ment for Vax, and how much Liam is dedicated to throwing that out of the window because of course Vax would Hate that armour, it got Vex freaking *killed*, and he only wears it begrudgingly because Vex wants him to and the fire resistance is convenient at the moment.
Actually it was ment for Percy. He started showing interest in the Raven Queen in previous episodes. But because of what happened....
@@xEvilRaptorx showing interest in something doesn't mean that the thing is meant for you. Percy taking the armor forced Vax to beg the Raven Queen to take him is what probably peeked her interest in him. So Percy fucked himself over.

Keyleth gave Percy a bird skull in a box. If Raven Queen doesn't scream Percy idk what does! It would've been interesting but the way it worked out is just fine too with me.

I mean, if you die and then are almost immediately revived, it's not much of an issue, is it?

The thing is, she (the character, not the player) was the one who wasn't actually THERE for that. Vex didn't even realize that it had happened until someone else told her, and by the time she was aware of it the danger was already over. It's quite literally an event that she didn't personally have to live through. So it's understandable that her relatively limited reactions are more in response to how others are dealing with it.
Not to say that it's inappropriate to instead be shaken by the knowledge that such a thing happened to you, as I gather was more the case with Pike. I'm just saying that Vex's attitude, in particular the contrast to that of characters who were actually aware of her being dead while it was happening, makes sense in context.
@@jmlynr it reminds me of a time i passed out as a kid. I came to on the ground with people around me, and confused because i just found myself on the ground. My mom was concerned and telling me not to go to sleep, with all these other folks around worried, and i was thinking to myself "Ya'll need to calm down, its not that serious."
Like i didnt care, but then again, I didnt see someone faint and knock their head on the edge of a concrete curb *shrug*

For all of those mad at Vax’s “dramatic” depression in this and the next few episodes, In this episode it hadn’t been very long since Liam lost his mother to cancer.
At 2:51:40 when Marisha says “dad!” my heart got crushed watching Liam’s face, probably thinking about his mother.....he just looks so genuinely depressed this whole episode

agreed, pretty sure it was about 13-17 days after her passing when this aired, since she died 4 days before E45 happened.
Yeah that's in addition to Vax as a character having a lot of issues and trauma right now as well, with Keyleth being generally difficult, dragons everywhere almost killing one of the closest people to his heart, having a weird time with motivation and what he's doing with his life, and also watching his twin sister die in front of him. Up until this point, they've all been through hell, and anyone who's angry at that would be much bigger pussies about it I can guarantee.
@@armleg "Seems average" but that doesn't mean it isn't what's going on, just as much as it could be. It's simply a valid explanation for why some people think Vax is particularly edgy teen recently, and some people think it's down to that kind of reason, which makes sense you see it happen all the tim and it's easy to tell in DnD games you play yourself.
I also feel like its mostly character, conflict with grog almost made him want to leave the group just a few days ago, all has gone to shit everywhere and the situation seems very difficult at best. After all this the most important person of his life dies because of his friends carelessness. When by some miracle she is brought back she acts like she just fell asleep during history class, not realizing how badly it broke Vax. I dont feel like he is really overacting, seems quite suitable for the character that is Vax. Of course the personal part could have some impact, but mostly I feel its intentional.
@@armleg His mother had been sick since before they started streaming, it getting really bad the last couple months before this. He said on the Between the Sheets that he had been pretty upset in general about the Raven Queen stuff. He saw the resurrection as an opportunity to sacrifice his character so he could be off the show while he grieved, probably coming back later with another character. He was upset about the Raven Queen stuff because he didn't want to be playing someone dark and be closer to death. In his words "I don't wanna be Batman." He said that he realized later that he was glad it turned out this way, because it gave him a chance to think about death in a more intimate way.
I love how the entire party look away from Vax and Keyleth while they’re having their moment.

The fact that Liam as Vax said "what?" when they were recounting Vex's death story to Keeper Yennen is ughhhh such a good acting. He wasn't in the room when Percy ticked off the death trap and he wasn't also after when Vex asked Percy about that . Goddamn, Liam O'Brien.

I love Vax. These guys play the rp part of D and D really well. Iv never been part of a group really willing to do the deeper emotional parts of character building.

It kind of annoys me that they don't let Scanlan have any fancy gear/items because he's irresponsible but pretty much all of them are just as irresponsible.

Fair enough, just sometimes the should let the creative fighter have some toys. I do agree that those two items would have been wasted on the bard.
The leather armor would probably have been wasted on him, as it'd be wayy too big for him.
However, Scanlan with what's essentially a pokeball of unknown power, possibly enough to store liches and giants for all we know?
Given his creativity and unorthodox method, that pokeball could become amazing in his hands!
SinerAthin yeah, see, this is why I think most people are generally idiots. They did originally give it to Scanlan wise man, Scanlan decided to give it to Percy because he thought Percy could be more useful with it, and Percy proceeded to give it to Vex. And the armor is magical. He could wear it, it adjusts itself to fit whoever chooses to don it. Also, Scanlan does have quite a few interesting toys. He has his handcone, he has those two wands, he has his singing longsword. If the handcone requires attunement and if the longsword is magical, i believe he is maxed out on attunement items he can wield, including what I do believe is his +2 ring of protection. Scanlan has plenty of fun little toys. They all do for the most part.

Nathan Richter She’s actually very good at it. She gets a lot of hate, but Marisha is a great actor and great roleplayer when it comes down to it.
Her whole thing is to be awkward and weird. Sometimes it can be really cringy, but I guess that's the point lol
After how many years in the world you think she would have grown up a bit and evolved as a person.. but no.. everyone else shows some manner of character development except for Keyleth and that rests squarely on Marishas shoulders to do so. She keeps circling the "we're not heroes" speech then happily flaunts their achievements like their badasses.. Marisha is just playing Marisha with druid powers. She's not invested in the world around her, she's just invested in herself.

The raven in the window moment was such a small one, but it was so impactful and imaginative, I saw it like a movie clip.

I had no idea it was supposed to be a crow impression until he described the bird but that kind of lended to it in a way, making you think "what was that?" along with the characters as though you're looking to the window sill along with them.

I love that Sam knows when to use his comic relief. I mean really right after Percy and Vax's big scene when they say goodnight and hes like its 4 in the afternoon honestly it killed me. I love that he knows when it's right to make jokes and when to hold off.

I don't think it is a coincidence that Episode 40 - where the Dragons wrecked Emon - is one of the more emotionally draining and dark episodes, while also being one where Sam was absent. He has a knack for keeping things from getting too heavy.

There was a comment Sam made one or two episodes back I think, where he was also saying "life was shit before this", and I think he was saying it out of character, so not as Scanlan. I know it's been 5+ years now, and I'm way behind, but I'm wondering what was going on in his life before he met the rest of the CR crew. It sounds like he wasn't very happy before he met the rest of the crew, which sucks, and is also impressive considering how upbeat Sam seems to be constantly.

Honestly, in his position I also would get mad. It doesn't matter how often you or anyone else in the party already nearly died. To lose someone that is so dear to yourself - and especially a twin sister- that's quite hard and even though she was brought back, knowing how close it was, having felt the fear and loss, just to find out it was because one person wasn't careful enough (not that I really blame Percy, they all sometimes forget themselves when it is about loot^^), I think it's just understandable to be more than a little upset.
That is not hypocrisy, but how emotion works and since he was willing to take her place, it seems like he thinks his life less worth than hers.
I mean up until this point Vax had avoided actually getting anyone killed, and while what he did _was_ reckless he at least learned for the most part. Vax also literally has the right to be mad when it was his _sister_ who quite literally died and he was then forced to pledge an oath to the Raven Queen in order to save her. I don't know if you lot are caught up all of it just yet, but Vax's oath will become more significant later on as the fact that he had to pledge said oath is also a fair point for him to be mad at Percy.
Everyone would be mad in Vax's position. His twin sister died. He's wasn't thinking straight.

@@viksox13 Up to this point no one actually fully died because of his boldness. It was usually only himself that he was endangering, except for Cassandra but even then he did everything to save her even healing her immediately while surrounded by 3 enemies on his own.
His sister quite literally died and he had to make a bargain with the deity of death essentially selling his soul because Percy made a mistake.
Sure Vax made careless mistakes, but always to his own risk and not many consequences came from them.

Part of its the secondhand cringe of overhearing a conversation thats typically supposed to be private. But theyre also not staring at them to try and minimize awkwardness. A scene like that would be even more difficult and awkward with a half dozen people staring at you during it. But it does make it look highly amusing.

I just realized that Percy spends his Time making ammunition for himself and Vex. His lady... He delights in providing her with special arrows.
Percy pays extra attention to her at almost every opportunity right from the start.

It was after the fight where Ripley kills Percy. Vex confesses as a way of contributing to his resurrection ritual, and it's not too long before they actually start going out. They get married in the Dalen's Closet one-shot.
Talesin pays close attention to what the group needs. It's increasingly evident in campaign 2 when he reveals the character traits and proficiencies of a certain firbolg

Keyleth can talk to animals, but grog's speaking his language
hey all except Grog came at this from a "it's a pet wolf" perspective, Grog came at it from a It's a wild beast you have to show whos' the dominate one. Honestly I'm not sure how much you can blame on the rest of the group every time Matt tryed to respond as the wolf keylith interrupted. Same with the rest of the party. Grog was the only one to ignore her.

I must give my sincerest thanks to Travis and Sam. They provide much needed comic relief when I'm just not in the mood for anything serious. Not to say that I don't like the serious parts. I just don't always, and they never fail to keep me watching anyways.
The serious drama moments can be a bit painful to listen to. Largely due to prolonged silences. Can really sap the energy, I'm with you on that.
Thing is, Travis and Sam aren't only providing comic relief. They're also developing their characters and progressing through the plot in a way that feels natural, believable.
@@django3422 I understand this is a very old comment, but prolonged silences are very real and they portrayed them very believably. This episode in general and this whole campaign is in the past, but these are some very real people portraying characters in ways that people actually act. Just because some people develop their characters in one way, doesn't mean that they can't develop them another way, Scanlan deals with some stuff later in the campaign and it is far from "funny". You gotta put yourself in the shoes of these characters or else you're just gonna compain about the characters whenever they make a decision that you would not make as yourself. Ya know? In any case, old comment, old episode, I truly hope you have a good one if you read this.

And the way they broke the tension was just too good. It was so silly but not juvenile or over the top or anything. Just an excellent balance of awkward, believable and jovial. They're both so good at dropping humour into a tense situation and they're even better at it as a duo.
That's why this series is so good, it makes me laugh so hard, and then 10 min later cry, has action, romance, and character developement
They also have the best serious role-play moments too, to be honest. Scanlan with his daughter, Grog's talk with Groon after the battle and immediately recognizing an important artifact in his character's history, Grog's professional handling of the wolf and trying to guide Keyleth with what to say. I appreciate the other's attempts to role-play and stuff but the overly dramatic brooding could be toned down. They have their moments though, Keyleth breaking down hearing the fire ashari are wiped out, thinking she's responsible and vax desperately trying to pull vex out of the ziggurat really gripped me. But god, they can be so damn emo sometimes.
There's nothing like two grown men roleplaying going to the bathroom.
