Hey gg, I fished with u in port a Memorial Day weekend . U got the next tarpon for sure, mbn to even hook one . Ima head down to port a July 4th weekend. So hopefully I hook up on those mackerel. make sure to close the trunk of ur car on ur fishing trips haha

I remember losing so many when I was young at the Port Aransas Jetty. For some reason I couldn’t keep them buttoned. Finally caught. 5’7” tarpon years ago at Bob Hall pier. Strange thing this tarpon but the shark rod with the head of a big whiting.
Thats crazy!! Thats a big tarpon, that would be a dream come true! Those fish love to spit the hook, hope I catch one soon!
Tarpon are hard to catch but fun! I'm 53 & I've never been able to leader touch a Tarpon.
I've hooked many but they spit that hook after the 1st or 3rd jump.
Set that hook hard & when that Tarpon jumps? Point your rod tip at him until he hits the water & repeat on every jump 🤟
They are a blast!
I hooked a 7' Tarpon a few years ago off Freeport Jetties & I almost caught him. A legal catch is being able to touch that leader.
Any day on the beautiful water, is better than at work.. Get Sum!

Tarpon are notorious for spitting out the hook, making them hard to catch

Gotta tighten the drag way down to set the hook on tarpon, then loosen up as needed.

I've caught many tarpon here in Florida, may I tell you that I could tell by how easily your drag pulled out that your drag was too loose to set the hook in a tarpon since their mouth is like concrete. I use 40 pound braid with 50-60 fluorocarbon leader and tighten the drag down to about 20 pounds pressure otherwise the hook won't set, you need to set the hook at least 8-10 times as hard as you can like you're trying to drive a nail in a board. If you have a handheld scale you can use the scale to figure out how many pounds pressure your drag is set.
Wow! Thats crazy. I really appreciate the advice🙏 I also think for live bait I was using the wrong leader. It was 100lb mono. This advice is really appreciated. For live bait what type of circle hook would you recommend?
@@GGAnglers The 100 lb will land more fish, the 50 lb will get more bites. I'm getting old now and don't really want to fight a fish more than 20 minutes and a 100 pound tarpon can take an hour or more to catch from land. So, a tarpon usually jumps and runs the most in the first 10 minutes of a fight after that it may just turn into a tug of war until the fish gets tired and since I want to hook more tarpon than I land I use lighter leader even though it may wear through in a long fight but I don't want to keep the fish anyway. The swim baits work well when the fish are rolling in different spots since you can react and cast to them quickly. I don't use a circle hook for bait in land based fishing since if the fish is swimming towards you when it bites the hook won't stick, they have to be swimming to the side or away since a circle hook works by sliding into the corner of their mouth so I usually use a 4x strong #2 treble hook. Hope this helps.

Hey bro I’ve caught a lot of tarpon, and you need to know thats its always gonna be a 30/70 chance you’ll land one. So dont feel bad, as long as they do they little dance on the water and you can see them thats good enough sometimes lol. The best way to catch one on live mullet is with a 12 foot 80lb leader with a 6/0 thin black circle hook then hope for the best. Theyre lower jaw is made out of bone so its impossible to penetrate it, so youll need to get the hook on the side of its mouth or upper lip. Once they jump you gotta aim ur rod tip at them and that minimizes them spitting out the hook. Once they go back down make sure you keep your drag super tight and lots of tension. 👍🏻

@@GGAnglers try pinfish, shrimp and crabs. Hook crabs like catching for Reds, also if you are going to use live shrimp, you must pinch off their heads if there is current in the water. Rarity or "difficult" to catch but definitely not a rarity. You'll get it more as you are learning. Good luck!
