As a Russian who became a fan of canadian football (specifically CFL)... this video is okay... not the best, but it's... mostly accurate for the basics but there're many things that should be explained... like single. You can score a single not only if you miss a field goal, but you can score a single with a punt and from a kickoff (happened in 2023 CFL season when Saskatchewan WON the game with a kickoff single against Edmonton as the returner didn't knew that rule and let the ball to stay in the end zone).

Fair point. I just redid this video recently on my current channel and I didn't notice this. When I first introduce the scoring, I do mention that a single is scored if they can't get it out... but then forget to say anything about that when I go in further details. I will append a new video explaining the deficiency.
There was a lot of things I intentionally left out. My idea for this video was a quick summary of what you would need to know to follow along if you knew nothing.

    Great video!
Further to the rouge or a single point on a kick, the video mentioned that this is a consolation for a missed field goal. I'm splitting hairs a bit, but it's actually not a consolation prize. This misunderstanding is the source for some people believing that the CFL rules rewards teams for failure, ie. missing a FG, which is not the case.
Instead, the rouge on a missed field goal is a reward to the offence for advancing the ball close enough that they can kick the ball into the opponent's end zone and denying them the ability to bring it back out. This is in line with the statement near the beginning of the video saying the goal of the game is to attack the opponent's end zone while defending your own.
It's a game of field positions and inches, and depending on how close you can get to the opponent's end zone, you can get various levels of rewards. As @teo_heel points out, you can score a rouge with a punt or even a kickoff (the latter more likely if there were some penalty yards added to make it closer).
(Aussie rules football has a somewhat similar scoring option where you get 6 points by kicking through the goal posts, but 1 point if outside the goal posts but inside the behind posts.)
Thanks for putting this together. It's a great resource for newbies to get into the CFL games!

Awarding singles wasn't much of an issue in the old days when scoring was much lower and the best field goal kickers hit on 50% of their attempts. I'd like to see the rule for kickoffs apply to punts and missed field goals: a point is only awarded when a returner catches the ball and is tackled or concedes in the end zone, but no point if the ball flies or bounces out of the end zone. Like it or not, winning a game on a last play missed field goal or punt is seen by many as rewarding failure in today's football culture.

I respectfully disagree sir. If a team does not want their opponent to win on a rouge, then they need to prevent them from advancing close enough to their own goal line. If the opponent is able to gain the yards, close enough to kick it through the endzone so that no return is possible, then they are rightly rewarded for it. Again, it's a game of field positions and inches. The rouge is only seen as "failure" if one doesn't understand this rationale.

@@3downbros That's the thing: more and more younger fans don't understand.
