  • We got a call for a Maserati Lavante stuck in the snow at the hop valley trailhead, it was their 2nd vehicle at the end of their hike, we were able to get it out for them before they got done with the hike.
Next we free a Mercedes Sprinter that had backed into a ditch at under canvas.

Bw Bacon seriously, I saw a guy struggling with a VW Touareg on snow and saying how this car was “a piece of cr*p” a “fake 4x4” etc…
Was trying to go up a steep iced covered hill… on worn Chinese summer tires!
And the best part: incredible, the “awful AWD system” actually managed to get the car uphill despite those tires!

Another option for the key may have been to remove the battery from the remote so the car couldn’t see it. But I readily understand why someone wouldn’t want to disassemble a expensive key fob. But it would have been an option. The fact that you thought out how there was a flaw in the customers otherwise well thought out plan is positively note-worthy.
One of the problems with being as talented and experienced as Matt is with recoveries is that when it gets to the point that Matt can’t handle the problem, then either a helicopter sky-crane or a submarine becomes required.
Please don’t stop doing recoveries, or publicizing them, the footage is incredible educational and entertaining.

I was an engineer for keyless entry. Just wrap the fob with aluminum foil if you don't have a metal box and it will block the wireless transmission from the fob to the vehicle and vice versa. It's a 125KHz signal. Very low power. Another method is to put the key ahead of the A pillar because a good design will only allow the door to be opened when the key is physically outside one of the 4 doors. Also, the car will not start if the key is outside the vehicle

I got into off roading probably 9 years ago. Back then none of us had anything more than a hilift and a set of snatch straps. They have some give to them, but not as much as one of these kinetic ropes! Now we just use winches for everything and these are popular.
We have wildly different terrain than in the desert here; tight trails and a lot of trees to winch from. Not desert sands or endless mud with nothing to winch / anchor off of. It's perfect for the kineti ropes.

I'll also add that your instruction on why you have the wheels turned the way you do is great. You're pulling the back end to the left, and they have the front wheels turned so the front end moves to the left, and thus out of the hole. It's counterintuitive to those who have not done recovery, but it makes perfect sense if you want to crab a vehicle to the side.
