Pity about the cliched representation of German Aristrocracy, but, afterall, it's only a bit of fluff, a giggle. We don't want to take ourselves too seriously though, do we? Humour is the great leveller and that is internationally.
According to Don Henderson's obituary in the Independent, it was to cover up his wedding ring, which he couldn't remove (The character Bulman was supposed to be unmarried)
