Checking Out the New iPhone Crash Detection Feature

  • Many are questioning if iPhone's new crash detention feature is too sensitive. Doug Sonders was riding his motorcycle when his iPhone flew off the handlebars. He says the phone sent his emergency contacts an automated text message and called 911. To test the new technology, The Wall Street Journal conducted what they describe as a "not-exactly-scientific" test. Journal reporter Joanna Stern says the feature worked as advertised in the moving vehicle but not in the stationary one.

Ever since I first heard of this new feature, I couldn't help but question if this feature is actually a "safety feature" when it comes to the phone simply falling onto a floor or carpeting.

as a 911 operator this is one of the worst things to exist. When we received the call the siri voice stalks talking immediately and we can’t hear over it. It also gives latitude and longitude so we need to listen closely as she’s talking so fast to write down the numbers. Since the call isn’t being made to 911, as it’s automatic the phone location isn’t extremely accurate and moves frequently which gives us no idea where the location actually is. Apple really should’ve coordinated with dispatch centers before just making their product 911, they have no idea how difficult it is for us to process all the information when siri is talking like she’s on steroids.
