Barney the Dinosaur Got Death Threats, Voice Actor Claims

- Back in the 1990s, Barney the dinosaur was a huge hit for children on television. Now, a new docuseries called “I Love You, You Hate Me,” is exploiting a disturbing dark side surrounding the beloved purple character. Bob West, the original voice of Barney, told Inside Edition’s Ann Mercogliano there were even death threats. “There was group called Jihad Against Barney,” he said. He feels that Barney stood for “inclusion, understanding, compassion, caring for each other.”
Imagine having so little going on in your life that you start a group to send death threats against a purple dinosaur in a kids show

Hearing Barney sing “I love you” was probably the only time some kids heard that phrase. That’s the bitter truth. Barney was more wholesome than the weirdos who hated him. I guarantee it wasn’t little kids.

The ones who took it too far were definitely not little kids. However, there were little kids (me included) who disliked him, some kids do find him obnoxious and overexcited but we never went overboard, other than a silly song nothing really came of it.
I’ve met Bob West in person at a convention, He was very kind and wasn’t negative in any way. I can’t believe people would send a person like him death threats.
That honestly makes it sadder. Some people just can't stand others to be happy.
HOW CAN ANYONE WANT TO HURT ANOTHER PERSON. Even if your not a fan of the show YOU DO NOT send death threats to anybody. The show is a wonderful example for kids to be kind to themselves and others. I can’t believe people like this exist. I pray that the creator, anyone else working on the show, and the voice actor will forever be safe and live there lives happily.

I’m 14, and Brazilian. I was born in the Brazil’s more ‘richer’ states, so I Didn’t have a childhood full of suffering, like everyone else from the poorer states of the country. I had access to TV my entire life, and I watched many kids shows. From the variety of shows, I saw Barney the most. Or I think I did because I remember most of him. I watched him for a very long time, and never seen anyone EVER hate on him. In fact I only saw hate around 2017ish when I was already in the us, where I’ve lived half of my life. When I discovered all this “hate”, i was shocked. Confused, also, Why would people like this be hating on a kids show? What has the shows staff done to make everyone hate them so much?
This is so saddening.. how can such an innocent, empathic character be hated?

I grew up with Bareny as a child in the 90s and I enjoyed him. Honestly, what is wrong with people? Seriously?! Why do people feel the need to tear someone or something down for no good reason?! It's not only sickening but pointless.

From what I remember when I was younger, it started out because it became fun to hate Barney, similar to how it was fun in the 2000s to hate Justin Bieber, but it turned into something much more extreme among certain groups of people. I mean when I was younger I remember among the older kids it was fun for them to hate on Barney, but they never did anything extreme like these people did

I remember all of this crazy hate happening and it was so disturbing that people would go to such hateful extremes...over a childhood character. My son's loved Barney when they were little. When we ended up in a domestic violence shelter with literally nothing but the clothes we were wearing, my youngest was devastated that he couldn't bring his Barney doll. He took that doll with him everywhere. A volunteer at the shelter gave him a new Barney doll and the Barney's Great Adventure movie. Barney was more than a fictitious character on a kids show to us. Barney was a comfort for a 1 and 5 year old that just had their lives turned upside down.
I'm so sorry you and your kids ended up in such a terrible situation. Since that time I hope you guys have gone on to better days and better times.

I was born in 1997 I grew up watching Teletubbies, dragon tales, magic school bus, reading rainbow, PBS channel, kids wb, and Barney the nostalgia and happy memories. These shows taught me about how to be compassionate and loving towards others and the importance of reading and sharing with each other.❤ But growing up in this generation when I got in middle school and then from there on to high school and graduating what we were taught we’re non-existent… I miss that 💯❤️ But you have to be the laziest evilest person in this universe to hate barney

In my defense, I didn’t have the luxury of consistently having cable for most of elementary. As a result, I had no choice BUT to watch PBS kids, 1 Saturday morning (Recess😊), and Fox Kids. I didn’t get consistent cable until around 5th grade.

I was beaten at home, beaten and bullied at school, surrounded by alcoholics and drug addicts, gang wars, AIDS, the streets were dangerous, school was dangerous, home was dangerous, even getting a hug was dangerous, television and movies were glorifying the situation, and gratuitous violence was in vogue. Most everyone I knew was in a similar situation or worse, and at least one kid I knew was being raised by an actual paedophile and we were afraid of even going near his house.
You have to understand what this happy dappy carefree Barney world of hugs and love and affection looked like to us. Imagine the North Korean government running a program on All-You-Can-Eat buffets on national TV and you can kind of get the sense of it. I remember distinctly the feeling that it was *mocking* us all. Of course I'm not saying it was right to hate or harass or threaten the actors, and I never liked those kill Barney songs, but you do really need to understand the Zeitgeist of the nineties to understand where much of the hate and casual talk of violence at the time was coming from. People look at it now with rose-tinted glasses, but it was also miserably violent for children.

As a childhood fan of Barney I was shocked by that news. Cause the character was a nice guy. And that song that sang at the end of the show, I remember it so vividly after hearing it again after all these years.

It’s important to remember that anyone who is so much of a loser that they threaten a fictional character is unlikely to have the drive to do anything.
Barney was always there for me growing up. At age 3, I suffered with massive tooth pain that my dentist had to remove practically half of my upper teeth. What got me through that day was a new Barney VHS tape my mom bought to cheer me up. I can’t believe at the same time, the Barney actor himself was dealing with idiotic people wanting to end his life. And for WHAT?!?!?? Literally doing his damn job while influencing young minds to have better decorum?!!???!?!!? “Barney’s singing a song about reminding kids to say please and thank you?? Oh hell nah that mofo gotta go!” LIKE- 🥴

My mom had gotten me a lot of Barney episode tapes and I would binge watch them a lot when I was a kid. My favorite episode was the Christmas special and I still have great memories watching that episode and all the other episodes. As a guy who just reached his twenties, I find it hard to hate Barney and I never will hate Barney. I couldn’t imagine myself hating or wanting to kill a dinosaur who helped to teach me life lessons to help prepare me for entering teenhood and adulthood💯💯💯
I was born in 89’ and I was Barney obsessed!! I had all the stuffed animals and VHS tapes. Even recorded episodes from the TV onto tapes. I had all the songs memorized. I can’t imagine or believe the character received that much hate. Even the actor. So ridiculous!

Am 34 years old and he was a big part of my childhood when I was little. Glad to be from a generation that wasn't as immature as today's generational society. 90s we're the simple and peaceful life, unlike today we're we constantly live in dark and immature times.

As a 90s kid I vividly remember practically everyone above the age of 5 hated Barney. No one I knew thought anything of it. What does disturb me is people actually sending death threats to the actor who played him... I always feel bad for the guy who played Barney but now for a different reason.

I remember as a kid enjoying the show then I grew out of it, so to speak. My favorite top PBS shows were Sesame Street, Reading Rainbow, Magic School Bus and Arthur. Barney fell in 5th place. But I know that if I were to watch Barney today, there's no doubt in my mind that I would still enjoy the shows positive messages today about love, family and friends. There's so many dark things in this world today, that it was nice having a show spreading some light in this world.

I remember somewhere from a video of someone trying to analyze of why people hate Barney was because he just looks creepy from his lifeless eyes and strange teeth and his only personality just being happy all the time while other kids shows having different feelings and sometimes teaches some tough situations like Big Bird learning Mr. Hooper has passed and Daniel Tiger trying to understand what is assassination while Barney doesn’t teach those kind of things and keeps doing the same thing every episode which is why he gets on people’s nerves

To be honest, I never liked Barney the Dinosaur as a kid and I still don't like Barney the Dinosaur as an adult. However, never in a million years such a thought came across my mind about sending threats or even wanting to kill the purple Dinosaur.

I loved Barney as a child. Especially Baby Bop. It felt like I was included in the kids group on the tv and it made me happy.
I think the under current of the hatred starts with Baby Bop and BJ.
The show centers around Barney with that fake smile and the kids hyped up on ritalin.
Then you see this one character (Baby Bop) walking around clinically depressed carrying a blanket. I wanna cry just looking at her glazed over eyes.
Then there's BJ with his slit watermelon (I'm talking about his plastered smile). He's nothing more than Barney's clone.
The show might have had positive messages for some. But all I saw were actors living in total denial.

I will admit. I'm 35 Years Old and still have my Barney doll sitting in my room. It kind of collects dust with all my other childhood toys in my room but it always serves as a reminder to not take life so seriously and that life back in the 90s felt so innocent and pure.
My 15 old only watched Barney as a baby and when he started prekindergarten his teacher told me he was the smartest, most caring, polite little boy she had in her class. He knew all his ABCs, knew how to count, his colors, how to share, say please and thank you. My son had a collection of all the Barney shows. My grandmother that also baby sat him also told me how calm and loving he was and how bell behaved a child he was. That made me so proud hearing great things about my child. We have Barney to thank! We loved Barney in our home!❤❤❤❤❤

it's beyond messed up how there's people out there ACTUALLY sending death threats to the guy who's the voice actor for barney. hopefully the people who did send those death threats to him get held accountable for what they did, because that is NOT okay and they shouldn't have done that. smh

I grew up watching Barney… Barney brings back so much nostalgic memories of my childhood… As an ESL student, Barney and all other programs on PBS, provided me comfort and solace🙂
When I was a kid in school, other kids were spreading rumors about Barney how one time a kid stepped on his tail and then he started yelling and swearing at the kid, and that was their justification for hating Barney. Even to this day, I’ve never seen or heard anything remotely close to that actually happening with Barney, but it just goes to show how kids/people will make up stuff and spread lies all because they don’t like something or someone

I loved Barney SO much growing up in the 90s. I had a little stuffed animal of Barney I always carried around with me and eventually gave it to my little cousin when he was about 5 and I was 10. Honestly I regret giving it to him. 😂😬
It is baffling and really pathetic that this man received ACTUAL death threats from people just because he was the voice actor for an incredibly popular and successful children’s show. Everyone recognizes how absurd that is, right?
I still love Barney ever since I was a little bot dealing with stage 4 cancer. He gave me hope and courage without Barney being there for kids in 1990s, I don't think I would've survive it.

Exactly like what happened with Scrappy-Doo…He had always been my favorite childhood hero and the creators made him rip my heart out by writing him into a character that wanted to kill all of humanity, including his fans…so I became Mickey in real life through Disney…and typed up a story to save him, and sent it to him on Cameo…He made me a video and made my review #1 to show he’s with me on this…I did it…I brought him back to us…

I have a random core memory of watching Barney when I was 3. I even remember what the episode looked like, what time of day it was, where I was sitting, everything
Back when I was little, I found Barney rather creepy that I barely watched clips of the show yet my mom kept buying us barney merchandise and plushies. Now that I accept who Barney is, but it's just so irrational to hate over some fictional character who is just wants to teach children how to be better people in the future.

I was in a old general store, and in the back were some old comic books, one book was Beavis and Butthead but the cover was the duo savagely murdering Barney. It looked like sh*t a serial killer would draw. It was just brutal.

As a Child with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (born in 1990) in The 90s and whose 1st Special Interest was Dinosaurs, I watched Barney until I was 9 years old; to hear that The Voice Actor who played him received Death Threats is extremely upsetting and heartbreaking!

A few years ago I was babysitting my nephew, toddler age.
I picked up a bunch of Barney dvds that were massively discounted at some random store. I loved the hypnotic effect it had on this kid.
I was born in 1990 and 2 when the show begin and I love Barney because the show filled my heart it taught us to always be good and helping friends. It hurts seeing some people hating the show and not understanding and not showing Respect.
I grew up with Bob West as Barney, and I remember the non-stop hatred towards Barney and Friends. In response, I wasn’t too vocal about my love for Barney towards people outside of my family due to the possibility of backlash. Looking back, I don’t hate Barney at all! It had good intentions, & Bob West surely didn’t deserve the death threats he got. I only wish for the best for him and Sheryl Leach.

Barney was always my inspiration back when I was a young child and helped me grow to be a loving and caring person to others until I became a semi-teen. Seeing the footage of Barney dolls being destroyed and tortured is something I take a great offense to, plus the original voice of Barney receiving death threats is really shocking.

I STILL have a huge collection of various Barney collectables including an ORIGINAL plush AND SEVERAL episodes on VHS stored in a sealed cardboard box in my bedroom closet!

Barney was with me throughout my entire childhood. I knew every song by heart. But for my older cousins, it was torture cuz every time they're in the car with me, they're stuck to hearing me sing "I love you" like a broken record player.

There was this once case where a bed-ridden paralytic patient was accidentally forced to watch "Barney" on television as he laid on his hospital bed. He hated the show so much, it actually motivated his nerves into regaining his mobility, thereby freeing him from his paralysis
