Norfolk and Western number 611 is one of the most famous excursion steam locomotives in the United States. It was built in house by the Norfolk and Western Railroad in 1950 at their Roanoke, Virginia shops. Since initial retirement in 1959, the locomotive has had two excursion careers, the first for the Norfolk Southern Railroad from 1982 through 1994 and the second for the Virginia Museum of Transportation from 2015 onward. In both 2019 and 2021, 611 traveled to the Strasburg Railroad in Strasburg, Pennsylvania for some excursions over their rail line through the countryside. During the 2019 visit, a special Norfolk and Western themed photo and video shoot was held featuring the 611 alongside the Strasburg Rail Road’s own N&W locomotive - 4-8-0 “Mastodon” type number 475. This was probably my favorite thing that happened when 611 visited Strasburg in 2019 taking part in one of their photo charters and that 475 was to dress up as 382 and even doublehead with 611 as well.
I saw the engine in 2019 for annual York Train show
I heard both N&W 475 and 611 are staying in the Sawenhalve Scrap Yard in Tucumcari ,New Mexico ,and
they will sell to Romania.
Is that true?

I love the whistle. It has a deep bellowing sound.
It is a great whistle, but from what I read it is not the original. The original, or at least one of the original J class whistles, is owned privately, and they did not want to loan it back out for this most recent restoration,

That poor thing DESPERATELY needs repairs. Only one chime is properly sounding. The highest pitched chime is what makes those Longbell 3 Chimes sing.

I love the 611. I can remember when it was at the original Transportation Museum in Wasena Park in Roanoke VA.
An now through some changes over the years and it's renewal back in 17 May 2015, it's still active and still running !!!
2 years ago I got to blow the whistle while it was stoked up !!! Good show !!
I will never forget the videos of this engine climbing Saluda grade. Pure magic.

love how they matched the cars to the train unlike 4449 excursions with random heritage cars opposed to the red and orange colored cars of the SP. and not just sp but many other excursions and classic runs that don't match era-appropriate cars I now respect this railroad a lot more.
Didn't the 4449 have it's own daylight cars? What happened to them?
Preserved, Sold, Repainted. Some were scrapped I think.
@@harrisonofcolorado8886 Like Doge said, some continued on in preservation, some got sold, some got scrapped. The Shasta Daylight cars that got scrapped were scrapped because some schtewpid vandals thought it a smart idea to set fire to them.
Strasburg does not screw around. They are very much "Do it right, or don't do it at all". They are all about removing you from the present and making you believe you're in another time in the past. It's like the Disney World of heritage railroads. The fact they even go to the extremes of cosmetically altering their own rolling stock during special events to be more appropriate to the time is a testament to their craft.
The “random” heritage cars are what I like about 4449’s excursions.

I saw n and w 611 at north Carolina transportation museum in Spencer nc last Christmas and it became by far my favorite locomotive of all time as well as the flying scotsman real quick and when I'm 18 I'm thinking I will return to the museum to drive 611 when I have my license.
I'm happy 611 is only about 90 minutes from my house to the Strasburg Rail Road. I'm sad 611 isn't running on the main line and that she was ferried from North Carolina to Strasburg. If you search TH-cam you can find a lot of HD videos of 611's main line trips through Virginia and North Caroline before she was barred from running mainline excursions on N/S mainline tracks. I visited her at the Roanoke Transportation Museum in June of 2019.
NS doesn’t want to bother with excursions on its tracks anymore because they cost money and liability insurance costs money as well. And they tie up busy freight lines.

What a video! Perfectly presented, flawlessly narrated and outstanding camerawork! You really captured the beauty of 611! What an engine! I remember seeing it as a kid on Peter Gabriel’s “Steam” video! Loved watching that just for the train part, haha!

611 looks so much better with a single beam headlight like they have on it at Strasburg. Definitely keeps the original 1950s look a lot better than the twin beam. But no matter what headlight she’s wearing, 611 is the most beautiful steam locomotive ever designed. Roanoke built them good.

611 did a great job at Strasbourg and now she’s being prepped and ready for her runs on the Buckingham branch. I just hope she gets a chance on the main line again that’s what the public wants

I’m really hoping to visit Strasburg this summer now! Great video as well.
I’d say this was especially big for northeast railfans. After the 614 finished the Hoboken excursions there wasn’t really any mainline steam in the tri state area so this was the closet thing we got in years
You’re forgetting 765’s runs in PA and NY several years ago with NS’s program. Those were mainline excursions.

Hey Mike! Did you get the news that strasburg 31 is being restored her fans to see her steam for another 15 or more years! So you can visit the strasburg railroad and film her! But some sad news too…. They’re retiring 90 when 31 comes back. So that’s a sad story:( but they’re bringing her back too in 15 or more years!

I have often wondered how much prep work went into the track to make it ready for 611 and how much wear 611 puts on the track. She is considerably larger and more powerful then their largest engine, #90.

Not really, the 4449 has a higher pitched Hancock Long Bell 3-chime whistle, while 611 and 4014 both have Hancock Styled Short Bell 3-chime whistles.
