    I have been thinking that in the future as my chicken numbers lessen or they're all gone, I might consider raising quail. I have to say that I am so glad you said you couldn't butcher your Muskovies, but only because it makes me like you even more and this is why: I have no problem with folks processing their poultry, of course, but it makes me more comfortable saying I cannot process my chickens. I become way too attached. I have two hens who are almost 14 years old, some right behind those two in age. I could process a hog, probably could process quail, but never my chickens; exceptions would be human-aggressive roosters, which I have not had in at least 14 years-we did process one and only one so as not to pass on his genes to future males. I would do that again because life's too short to deal with mean roosters. Thanks again, always happy to see a video from you, Julianne. ~Cynthia

      I struggle more with attachment every year as we breed more of our own for the next year. We are three generations in on the ducks and they are GORGEOUS and so HEALTHY that I have been selling my extra females instead of butchering them. I just can't do it because they could bless someone else's homestead with good breeding stock.
      The geese have failed to set fertile eggs but we added in three gentle, beautiful ganders this summer and they are so kind and quiet that I just can't butcher any of them. Even butchering one would cause their personalities to change out of sorrow and distrust. They live for 30 years so that is a long time to hate humans.
      That is why I am so set on figuring out how to grow my own feed and source what I can't grow as local as possible. I can't bear to say goodbye to any more of my perfect little homebred homestead animals.

      @@dirtpatcheaven I love this comment you just made. Good temperament in chickens is heritable for the most part and surely in geese as well. I have always said you should breed from the best, cull the rest, whether you give those substandard ones away with full disclosure or process those meanies. I have only had chickens and guineas so far. Even our guineas were tame enough to sit on your lap or shoulder. I just love our birds. They are beautiful eye candy and give us eggs, fertilizer and great entertainment. If I was eating mine, it would not give me as much joy as they have for all these years. Have a wonderful weekend!

      Sometimes quails are more wild crazy little cute birds ;)
      Most times they don't really have seperate personalities like chickens do
      Its my first year having both chickens and quail they are really different even as chicks
      But raising single chicks with chickens and quail now
      One quail chick hand raised is still ....they have personality they look and love your care
      Theres no way i could process a single hand raised chick they are like a child in many ways.... sleepless nights with a lonley chick theres an attachment for sure

      @@dirtpatcheaven thinking about the netting. Could you just hang curtain rod on each side and then slide the netting panels up and down along the length of trough. So the ikea kits are so cheap.
      Look up Chinese greenhouse blanket. Maybe a curtain system like that!

    The rain on plastic sound is so relaxing! I’m currently in SE New Mexico and the winds here are too fierce for any sort of plastic covered greenhouse or structure, no matter how it’s weighted or secured. It picked my first one up and blew it over a 6ft fence and 30 feet away into a pecan orchard 😂. I’m a bit jealous of yours!

    • @dirtpatcheaven
      @dirtpatcheaven  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This one is a TUFF greenhouse. We have winds like you and I had several greenhouses torn up and one that went over the neighbor's fence like a parachute. This one is amazing. I don't know if they still make them or not.

    Very cute quails
    My friend gave me quails because they were dowpnsizing for the winter
    They gave us a cage too with about 40 brown quail
    Being able to help others get started with animals is great sometimes especially when you get attached to certain animals
    Sometimes we get really friendly rabbits we save them and sell or give them away for breeders or pets
    Im glad i can help others too and you don't have to keep feeding them and don't have to put them on the table sometimes free it is :)
    Great video and idea hopefully the turkeys will listen to the rules lol
    We had to sell our turkeys because I didn't think I could house them for the winter and them be happy
    I sold them for a good price because they are a breeding pair but just before Thanksgiving i didn't want them to be a free turkey supper or they would have been on our plate.... sometimes you need to charge and sometimes not
    Much love xoxox have a good one

    • @dirtpatcheaven
      @dirtpatcheaven  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. It is interesting the longer you raise your animals how your values become more mature and nothing is really cut and dried and definite when it comes to their welfare. We loved having the turkeys this year but we won't hatch them next year because they are so mean to all the other birds and like you said, I don't have a solo shelter for them that they would be happy in through the winter. Always something to learn!

    I wonder if round bale netting would work? I raise beef,chickens and ducks! On the duck cage I purposely made the run 12 feet high for quail but never purchased quail! The purpose was two floors for more room! We bale 55 acres of hay a year and sell some round bales and squares not many maybe 500 squares a year! But I have 30 or so round bale netting wraps that end up in land fill!

    • @dirtpatcheaven

    The lack of self preservation instincts among the quail is very sad, but apparently the norm.
    Even raising their own young is beyond many of them.
    Deck or construction screws with the star drive head are amazing for permanent and temporary fastening.

    They recently started making a clear greenhouse plastic version of shade cloth, my assumption is they use it for catching water in the mountains otherwise I see no reason for it but it would do the same thing for the birds if you got 10% coverage cloth. Some have riveted holes others are meant like a greenhouse blanket so they can tie down or be a curtain. I don't know if it would be cost effective or if you use Amazon but they do have cheap crap even though I dislike their business generally

      The pattern is from Cathy Carron's book Hattitude. I believe it was the red riding hood pattern? I made it really big and then felted it in hot water in the washing machine. It is my own wool so I was able to adjust the yarn big to make the hood start big and shrink down to the size I wanted and make it wind-proof.

    • @dirtpatcheaven
      @dirtpatcheaven  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have raised them in my house. The problem is the smell and feathers, if you have sensitive lungs you have to be really careful to keep sand in their shelter so they can clean themselves. Pretend they are indoor cats and you pretty much have it down. Don't give them kitty litter as they might eat it for grit and then it will clog and swell in their innards.
