    Something I found useful when playing Crim's version of this deck, was to be much more aggressive in phasing out your opponent's creatures. In addition, Rona's Vortex as an extra bounce spell while keeping up counters can save you in the matches where you're not finding the creatures, like Match 2.

    • @loganjohnson4257

      @@MTGGoldfish Honestly, only for the kicker, which I think is out of mana budget for how this deck wants to play; it remains a fifth or sixth or seventh fading hope even without that black mana budgeted in, which is probably an okay sideboard.

  • @samouflage99

    32:12 A cool trick would have been to double cast the Otherworldly since it would be discounted by the Djinn, triggering the Ledger Shredder and most likely setting up a nonland on top with the first cast of Otherworldy resolving. Then the Shredder would've grown too big for the Cut Down to work :D

    That RB Lagomos deck was SUPER sweet Gharna is incredibly powerful. They just didn’t have a sideboard plan for mono u tempo curiosity which is understandable. I am certainly going to build this but I will definitely be adding 3 Lilliana to the sideboard and, if I can afford it, 4 Sheoldred to the main board because f*** your card draw.
    Also there is a busted version of warhorn in DMU that costs RB2 (or R2 if lethal) and draws for each dead attacking creature. The value is so powerful. I feel like this is the one deck that gets to use Meathook Massacre as it was intended- by sacrificing its own creatures in blood artist style.
    Too bad meathook will be banned soon.

    I know it’s supposed to be budget mtg, but adding one copy of Otawara should be considered. It just makes the deck strictly better with only 1 rare. It’s just shy of being $15 a copy, so I get that it probably made the cut due to that. With that being said, it’s tough building a competitive deck under $100. • @wmichaelgaunt
      @wmichaelgaunt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think that could be a great add! I think the one point in essence scatter’s favor is the cost reduction from the djinn, but that upside would definitely come up less often than the +1/+1 counter.

    I feel like Ledger Shredder isn't actually that great in this deck. It wants you to double-cast so that you can connive, but this deck's general plan wants you to be really conservative with your card use.
    You probably could've gotten a 4-rare deck that was ALMOST as good as this one if you just replaced the Shredders with Stormchaser Drakes.

    • @kami4242
      @kami4242 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      True, but don't forget that Shredder also punishes your opponent for double spelling. Also, countering an opponent's spell during your turn plus a consider at end step is enough to set off Shredder

  • @ReidFisher86
    @ReidFisher86 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    32:15 we could have gazed and set up a spell. And then flashback’d gaze to connive the shredder to a 2/4 so that it wouldn’t be cut down.

  • @themanly1672
    @themanly1672 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I play something similar. My wildcard situation dictated my deck choice a little.
    Not a fan of the terror. Not usually worth the cost IMO.
    I run 4x Shore up and 4x Slip out the back for protection. All this black warrants it IMO.
    4x combat research for draw. And 4x consider.
    4x make disappear for spells. 4x fade away and always happy to have one in hand.
    Creature suite is 4x delver. 4x ledger shredder. 2x suspicious stowaway. 2x Haughty Djinn. 4x stormdrake.
    20 lands. Still too many lands most times haha. Stowaway is awesome being unblockable.
    Deck runs smooth. Just mostly dependent on the coin flip as with most things haha.

    • @Spaced92
      @Spaced92 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Terror is a lot better than ledger shredder for me, I do put in Delver though as a guilty pleasure but most people run less creatures, Idk about most of your creature choices tbh. I don't doubt you get decent wins it's just not that optimised, the highest win percentages come from literally just Djinn and a Terror or two.

    • @ther3aper561
      @ther3aper561 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Stowaway seems really good, ESPECIALLY over Terror

    • @themanly1672
      @themanly1672 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Spaced92 I just tried to bring the MV down to be honest. Most of the time, there aren’t enough spells in the bin to justify terror.
      Delver is a great 1 drop. Otherworldly gaze is awesome to set it up. I could see putting that in if you want. But going down a card to set it up wasn’t worth it for me.
      Stormdrake draws many cards and removal spells haha. Target it with combat research, draw a card, etc.
      Djinn and Stowaway as 2x is because of wildcards. Both have been awesome. Especially if you get to flip stowaway.
      Ledger shredder is great against aggro and red decks, has been underwhelming otherwise.
      I have the number of creatures that I do to keep up the threat density. Always want 1 or 2 on the board.
      Always seems like I want to have an extra fade away or 2. The games I do lose are usually 1 tempo play away from winning.
      How would you go about optimizing it?

    I'm running something similar, but my creature base is only 2 delvers and 4 djinn. You can knock a lot off the value by running this list:
    Card draw is all through spells. 8 rares, much cheaper and it lets you play a set March of Swirling Mist which is such a versatile card both protecting your djinn and countering your opponent's gamewinning swing.
    4x Consider
    2x Delver of Secrets
    4x Fading Hope
    4x March of Swirling Mist
    2x Shore Up
    3x Syncopate
    4x Impulse
    2x Make Disappear
    3x Negate
    3x Ertai's Scorn
    4x Haughty Djinn
    4x Thirst for Discovery
    1x Case the Joint

  • @virtueofabsolution7641
    @virtueofabsolution7641 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So basically 99% of the cost of the deck is just Ledger Shredder, right ?
    Been running this archetype in draft with UR spells. The curiosity is good with battle mage (legendary UR 1/3 flyer) and twincast means you hit for minimum 6 draw 2 with so much versatility. I could be wrong but I think this deck and a mix of the Ivy archetype (maybe green maybe not) and the UR prowess deck might be a format all star.
    I’ve also really liked Micromage to tutor up Shore Up/cantrips but it may be too slow for constructed but it seems like it could be insane when you have 5 mana and a flyer with two curiosity’s perhaps as a sideboard card as the 1 mana kicker spell that gives -1/-0 and forces blocked could be okay last resort for dealing with Sheoldred too.
    Also- Tolarian terror (and the other cost reduction creatures) have been format defining in UMA draft. You could combine the force block cantrip with terror to trade a 2 mana Terror for a Sheoldred and perhaps others with tricks
    ALSO also Fires of Victory has been BUSTED when you keep your hand full via curiosity and worst case scenario it’s actually that old 5 mana desk 4 draw a card.
    That all said this deck may just be the meta answer to Sheoldred black with 4 essence scatter

    As annoying as the salty rope is, when I was playing arena I always took it as a compliment. Needs to be noted my playstyle would be considered kinda "Crimmy" by goldfish standards.
    Edit to say: as it stands delver has always been "sketchy good" like the most frustrating good card ever. With the introduction of Balmor, delver made it back into my modern izzet delver, which wasn't running delver for a while cuz DRC.

    @Ciph3rzer0 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't think you want delvers in this deck honestly. The most annoying version I've faced is 4 haughty djinn, 3 tolarian terror, and then way more counters.

  • @Atmapalazzo
    @Atmapalazzo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Honestly I think going slightly over paper/mtgo budget is fine for standard. It's annoying that Arena's economy isn't compatible with rest, but it's still worth considering arena, since it is part of the game

      I think UW virtuoso is kind of similar, just less counters and more pump/protection.

    • @darksideofthesand
      @darksideofthesand 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're talking about a control deck at that point. This is designed to be an aggressive deck with high interaction, similar to merfolk. As it was already said if you want to go U/W, virtuoso is what you would be looking at. Using storm drake and virtuoso as you main threats while growing them and pumping them with targeting spells. A lot of newer versions of the deck go baby so you can also run ivy since you can double up your pump spells with her.

    Interesting. My version doesn't play any Otherworldly Gaze, Combat Research nor Make Disappear. It plays 4 Fading Hope, 3 of that Ronas Vortex for 7 bounce spells and 4 Tolarian Horror serpent guy to go more aggro and less tempo/control. Combat research just feels bad if you get 2 for 1'd, so you also need to hold up protection and then you're playing too slow for a format that aggro can get under easily.
    Syncopath is also a better counter, imo, since it pairs well with Djinn (and you don't have anything you want to sac in this deck). 4 Slip Out the Back is also better than the other hexproof spell, since it protects against Liliana (also is useful on offense to move a blocker).
    I'm not saying my build is better, mostly I just enjoy discussing variations of a deck. Definitely a fun one and it'll be interesting to see the best build come out in the next few months.

    • @kami4242
      @kami4242 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Slip Out The Back is usually better because of board wipes and Lilly but not in every case. It's pretty havingto phase out during your turn and miss out on attacking. I'd run both in a deck like this
