Perfect fit clothing patterns for action figures

  • Hi all, found this trick some time ago and thought it could be helpful for you guys.
    In addition to this step by step process we should have planned before hand which pieces will form our final product.
    I strongly recommend to do some research online for real clothing patterns, then use this method for sizing, just to get the desired patterns to fit your particular figure.

    Thank you for sharing how to do this, the prices people charge online for action figure clothing is ridiculous I'd rather make my own even if they aren't as good as a professional would make it's better than paying anything from £10 for a pair of trousers upwards of £70 to £100 for a full costume.

    • @wilcapoeira
      @wilcapoeira  2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Haha Id rather do things myself yup!
      But the way to look at this is how long it takes to make the stuff. I put 2 hours on batman shorts, how much do you earn each hour in your job? This is not my job but I make over 20€/h… am I willing to make 5€/h on figures? Right now my free time is worth much more so I would probably reject doing pants at 10£ each.
      That’s the reason why I only pick interesting, one off projects, I can’t base my model on quantity, I must base it on quality.
      Just thinking out loud :)

      @@wilcapoeira Yeah I've used your technique just now and I'm making a T-shirt for a mcctoys 1/12 body I bought off Ebay then I'll make some pants for him. I think the people that make action figure clothing have been doing it for so long that they can make a full outfit in a night, but they make out as though it takes them longer so they can charge more. Personally I'm unable to work due to a disability so if I was good enough to sell custom clothing I'd be happy even if I made £10 a day as it'd be £10 more than I would have got anyway lol 😆. But for now I'm just happy making clothing for my own figures and maybe something for a couple of friends 😃👍

      @@wilcapoeira Let's just say the first try went pretty 💩. I got to the point of sewing it together by hand and it just kept pulling apart. As I tried to put it on the figure the side split open and then the sleeve came off too. The fabric im using is polycotton fabric and i might have to make each piece double thick to stop this happening because I haven't had this issue until I tried to make a t-shirt, I might have to buy thicker material next time. I'm starting again now on a second t-shirt 🙈 the last one I was working on for 3 hours and now its a ball of screwed up fabric because it's not even salvageable 😅😅 I laugh but it's annoying but all my fault for using fabric that is too thin for the clothing I'm trying to make.

      I may do one down the line but easiest way to do them is to look for patterns online and apply this method to the upper part of it. Start as if it was a shirt to get the upper body fit and then enlarge the bottom part when cleaning up the pattern on paper.

  • @Augnalius
    @Augnalius ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I want to make a seamless neck skin tight bodysuit for 1/6 and 1/12 action figures.
    The hot toys Spiderman sewing pattern is similar to your black panther one, but with fabric that covers the neck without any seams on the front.
    Hot toys Spiderman patterns have the seams go down the left and right sides of the neck then down the back of the shoulder blades and the seams end in the armpit area.
    Could you please make a tutorial on how to make the hot toys style sewing pattern or give suggestions on how to make this pattern for my action figure?

    • @wilcapoeira
      @wilcapoeira  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey, basically, yo do a mummy out of your figure with this plastic film and painters tape trick and draw those seams that you described from HotToys Spiderman on top of the painters tape.
      Then you go with your scissors over the painted seams and you will have your pattern.
      Second topic is making it skin tight.
      On this scale, 1/16th of an inch or a millimiter, is like going up one size in your human clothes.
      The only reliable way I found to mail my suits is test fitting often. Sometimes I would even test fit 3-4 times when doing just a leg seam.
      The reasons for this are that I do only one copy of each piece, I usually switch bodies in my builds and each fabric has a level of elasticity.
      If I had to do 100 copies of something I would unravel a fitting suit and getting a pattern out of it. Then I wouldn’t feel the need of the back and forth fitting.
      I hope you get my points

      Thanks for the reply.
      In summary, I think you mean
      1. tape mummy and make 1st template out of it.
      2. Then trace template onto fabric.
      3. Then cut and sew fabric
      4. Next hem/adjust/ re-sew in areas that need to be tighter.
      5. After the clothing fits right, undo the stitching and use that clothing fabric to trace a new template onto cardboard,.
      6. Then use this new template as the final template for all of your 100 + sewing copies ?

    What is the name of the thread hand sewing stitch pattern that you use? Would hand sewing 12" figures work too or would a sewing machine be better for that size?
    You use a special fabric glue pen/marker too ?

    • @wilcapoeira
      @wilcapoeira  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I havent used one for 1:12.
      I got a good one in storage, but some seams are too small to bother using it.
      Where I can’t beat a sewing machine is at finish quality, but I rarely leave thread exposed on these spandex suits.
      If you are making a jacket that will have exposed seams, hand stitching is hard work.
