1:35:24 the first news of Senna’s condition. It’s interesting as ESPN got it later than the BBC. They got the news with 20 laps to go and to hear Murray Walker speak so low, you knew it was very bad.

I think it was a blessing in disguise that ESPN had to leave the broadcast almost immediately after the race was over due to time constraints due to the red flags. None of the drivers on the podium celebrated, as allegedly they already knew at that point that Senna was dead. American fans didn't have an opportunity to see the podium ceremony until years later when the now-defunct Speed Channel showed it as part of their "F1 Decade" series. I believe that is on here if anyone wants to see it. I would link it, but i want this comment to show up.

I just commented how spot on he was on a few things he said. Obviously Derek knows his stuff but how frighteningly accurate he was. Watching this entire broadcast put me in a headspace. Just dread, man

I had the chance to interview Bob Varsha years ago about sports media and I asked about broadcasting on site versus in a remote studio and he said the only time he was happy to not have been on site was for this race

A journalist from Brazil, Livio Orichio, who at the time covered Formula 1 for local newspapers, even walked to Tamburello, but was advised against it by track officials who warned that the situation was irreversible.
Another journalist who was called to see the body of the Brazilian driver was Flávio Gomes (at the time a commentator for Rádio Jovem Pan and a reporter for Folha de São Paulo), but he didn't want to go. A doctor he met ended up giving details of how Senna was left.

During the 1994 F1 Season, ESPN was doing more Remote Broadcasts prior to years before when they were going to every race with Japan, Australia and maybe another race being an exception.
In 1994, ESPN was only on site for Monaco, Canada and Jerez

@@JamesCuevasJr Brazil. They did remote broadcast for Brazil, presumably due to the economic situation there years ago.

Derek Dalys comments were all eerily spot on, unfortunately. He pretty much predicted what had happened with his obviously superior technical knowledge of crashes and such. Damn ...

To say that this was the saddest weekend in F1 history, is a major understatement, kinda like saying WWII was a 'minor disagreement'. This was one of the worst events in the history of all sports, not just motorsports.
    RIP Ratzenberger & Senna.

Yeah I think 1973 Dutch grand prix was the darkest weekend in grand prix history david purey tried to save Roger Williamson but failed and it's worth noting the other Marshals aren't wearing fireproof clothing which means they just stand there and did nothing and just let him die it took 8 minutes to extinguish the fire but it was way too late Roger Williamson was already dead.

I remember this race and my dad telling me, even before they were taking Senna to the helicopter, that he wasn't going to make it. I was a little young to fully grasp how much this would come to change F1. Here, I think Bob Varsha and Derek Daly did a great job of reporting on this. Years later, in an interview or maybe on F1 Decade or something, Varsha commented that not being on-site actually helped them as they had immediate access to the resources of ABC News, whereas the commentators on-site were much more limited in what confirmed info they could get, although everyone knew it was a bad situation.

Absolutely sucks that the steering modification on Ayrton's car was welded so poorly such an avoidable accident, should have been between Michael and Ayrton.

Its eery all the things they say before the accident. Like "tomorrow they mourn of their own", "low grip circuit with too many chicanes", "mechanical failure is a drivers worst nightmare", showing bergers monster crash before showing rolands, etc. Its kinda creepy just how much foreshadowing their was

Americans don't usually show accidents in detail. In the Ratzenberger crash, they cut the scene before the car finished sliding with the driver unconscious.
At least in Indy and NASCAR broadcasts, they don't usually show a replay if the crash is very serious and the driver is not completely well.

I remember seeing the Eurosport live feed a few years ago and being shocked by them showing the Roland’s crash aftermath and pulling his lifeless body out of the car and staring CPR live on the air.

@@gofastandwynn It was the same thing in the Brazilian broadcast. And the narrator at the time, Galvão Bueno, asked guest Rubinho Barrichello not to look at the scene that was shown live, which was Ratzenberger covered in blood.

@@gofastandwynn Yeah, the Eurosport coverage, which is sometimes up and sometimes removed from TH-cam, shows them working on Senna and you can see when Erik Comas comes flying around Tamburello toward the crash scene.
