  • Our 4-H turkeys are ready for processing. We have a local farm that processes poultry and I am going to take the turkeys there today. I show you how I create a transport area in the back of my truck. I have found turkeys to be easy to raise and they weren't hostile or aggressive at all. The only negative is that they (their feces) did have a smell that was worse than all my other animals. My daughter hates that we have to harvest the turkeys and may not show animals any more after this because it bothers her too much. The boars still love attention! My runt buck is staying away from the other bucks who are going into rut because he remembers how they bullied him earlier. I appreciate the turkeys served their purpose and they were treated well while on the farm.
Every day my family and I are learning what it means to run a hobby farm. We started with chickens then added myotonic, or fainting, goats, and eventually kunekune (kune kune) pigs. Throw in some Guinea fowl and turkeys and cats and dogs with a creek and tons of wildlife and you start to get an idea of what our hobby farm is like. Hobby farming is time consuming and hard, but rewarding and fulfilling. There are daily chores that never stop. The animals need to be fed and watered. Pastures and pens need to be fenced and built. Goats and pigs need to be rotated in their pastures to give them fresh food and to rejuvenate the land. Food is planted and grown for the animals. Medicines are given orally and injected to prevent and cure sickness and combat parasites. Hooves need to be trimmed. Babies need to be raised. At any given time we have gilts, sows, boars, piglets, bucks, does, kids, chicks, chickens, keets, guineas, turkeys, etc. that need our attention, love and care. Follow along and we’ll learn and grow on this adventure together!

If you kill a farm animal, you start a new life. Conversely, if you don't kill, it means that someone will never be born.
So basically it's a dilemma, let one animal live for 5 years and four animals live for 0 years or let five animals live for 1 year each.
This is the harsh truth of life and not killing is not a better option, as you can see.
