  • Leamington Spa, commonly known as Royal Leamington Spa or simply Leamington, is a town in Warwickshire, England. It has a rich history that dates back centuries. The town's origins can be traced back to the Domesday Book of 1086, where it was recorded as "Lamintone."
It started as a small village and remained relatively insignificant until the 18th century. Leamington's transformation began in the late 18th century when the healing properties of its mineral springs were discovered.
Dr. William Abbotts and Benjamin Satchwell promoted the medicinal benefits of the waters, which attracted visitors seeking treatment. The town gained the "Royal" prefix in 1838 when Queen Victoria granted it the status of a royal spa.
In this vlog we have visited the following main attraction points:
    1. All Saints Church
This is an historic Anglican church located in the center of Royal Leamington Spa. The church's history dates back to the early 19th century. All Saints Church has a Gothic Revival style. The church features a cruciform plan with a central tower and spire.
It is built of local Warwickshire sandstone, giving it a distinctive appearance. It was built between 1821 and 1828 to serve the growing population of Leamington Spa, which was rapidly expanding as a result of its increasing popularity as a spa town.
    2. The Old Library Pub
The pub is located in a historic building that was originally constructed in 1904 as a Free Library. It served as a public library for the town until 1997 when a new library facility was established. The building was then converted into a pub.
The Old Library Pub is a notable establishment in Leamington Spa, combining the town's history with a vibrant social scene. Inside, you can still find elements reminiscent of its library heritage, including bookshelves, wooden panels, and a cozy, traditional atmosphere.
    3. Jephson Gardens
The gardens were established in the mid-19th century and named after Dr. Henry Jephson, a physician who promoted the therapeutic benefits of the spa waters in Leamington. The gardens were designed as a public space for residents and visitors to enjoy nature and leisure activities.
The gardens were laid out in the Victorian style and reflect the period's emphasis on formal landscaping and horticulture.
Jephson Gardens provides a range of facilities for visitors. These include well-maintained paths for walking and jogging, seating areas for relaxation and children's play areas.
    4. Jephson Gardens Conservatory (part of Jephson Gardens)
There is also a glasshouse known as the Jephson Gardens Conservatory, which houses tropical and exotic plants. This building is an elegant glass structure designed in the Victorian style. It features a combination of iron and glass, which provides an ideal environment for housing a variety of plants.
Inside the Jephson Gardens Glasshouse, you will find a diverse collection of tropical plants, including palm trees, ferns, orchids and other exotic flora. The display is carefully curated to show the beauty and diversity of plant life from different regions around the world.
The conservatory also offers educational opportunities for visitors to learn about different plant species and their habitats.
    5. The River Leam
This originates in the village of Hellidon in Northamptonshire, about 12 miles (19 kilometres) northeast of Leamington Spa. It flows through the countryside, passing through various towns and villages, including Leamington Spa, before eventually joining the River Avon near Warwick.
    6. The Leam Boat Centre
This provides a range of activities and services related to boating and water sports. These include canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding, and raft building. They offer equipment rental, lessons, guided tours, and group activities for people of all ages and skill levels.
    7. The Royal Pump Rooms
The Royal Pump Rooms were constructed in the early 19th century as part of the development of Leamington Spa as a fashionable spa town. The building was designed by C. S. Smith and completed in 1814. It served as a social and entertainment venue for visitors who came to enjoy the town's therapeutic spa waters.

Leamington Spa is a fantastic place to live, but walking up town can be a nightmare. Professional beggers now litter the length of the Parade with doorways and key points occupied by an ever growing army looking for handouts. The parks are lovely but again you stand a good chance of being hit for 10p which is never really 10p, to cover a fantasy bus ride, but in the park you're more likely to meet one of the towns many alcoholics, so keep an eye on your kids at all times.
If you drive, be careful parking and going for a leisurely stroll to the shops or having a bite to eat, etc. as there is now one traffic warden per thousand residents, and they will get you for any errors on your part.
Yes, it's a beautiful town, but with the police and council turning a blind eye to so much antisocial behaviour, a lot of people are starting to wonder how much longer before it becomes just another borough of Coventry.

People have been wondering about the Coventry borough thing since I gre up there in the late 70's, so no Leamington will remain Leamington.

Indeed, last time we've been there the place was closed. But, to be honest with you, I was quite surprised seeing that has a free entrance :)

Where did you get a name like Florian? I was born in Leamington in 1961 and i'm still here. Love your tour!

Hi Sue, first of all thanks for watching the video and of course for the positive feedback. Regarding the name provenience, I've been born in Bucharest on 1st of April 88. The birthday was close to Palm Sunday which in Romanian is translated as ("Duminica Floriilor" - The Sunday of Flowers), therefore my parents decided naming me Florian. So, Florian is a masculine name of mixed origin. Coming predominately from Slavic and Latin origins, this name means "flower".

No that pub called the old library was NOT a library until 1997! The library was up Avenue Road. That pub was pervious a Wetherspoon and prior to that was The Chair and Rocket! Check your facts.
