    Paid VPNs, especially ones sponsored by TH-camrs, aren't that trustworthy either tbh. The only VPN you should trust with your data is one you host yourself.

      Am not sponsored by a VPN company but I don't entirely agree. The advertising claims of them are sketchy, the products have some uses.
      I think they are all roughly equal in terms of capability, with mullvad being a bit better. If you are concerned with MITM or a specific snooper, a server you SSH into is better. Commercial VPNs are a good way of blending in with the noise, IE checking a ransomware site for threat intel purposes.

      "Unlike Tor exit nodes, VPN providers are usually not actively malicious. Because Tor exit nodes can be created by anybody, they are hotspots for network logging and modification. In 2020, many Tor exit nodes were documented to be downgrading HTTPS traffic to HTTP in order to hijack cryptocurrency transactions. Other exit node attacks such as replacing downloads via unencrypted channels with malware have also been observed. HTTPS does mitigate these threats to an extent.
      As we've alluded to already, Tor is also easily identifiable on the network. Unlike an actual VPN provider, using Tor will make you stick out as a person likely attempting to evade authorities. In a perfect world, Tor would be seen by network administrators and authorities as a tool with many uses (like how VPNs are viewed), but in reality the perception of Tor is still far less legitimate than the perception of commercial VPNs, so using a real VPN provides you with plausible deniability, e.g. "I was just using it to watch Netflix," etc." - the PrivacyGuides website
      TL;DR: probably *don't use Tor specifically as a replacement for VPNs because of the views around it, and you'll stick out like a sore thumb.* Self-hosted VPNs are fine.

    Self hosting a VPN for piracy is also stupid. Where will be your endpoint? Most likely on a VPS server that will be hit and your VPS provider WILL give authorities your information. The only time self hosting a VPN makes sense is to access your home or work network... The whole reason VPNs even exist.

    Today everything is sketchy, even if you pay you still have ads and get tracked for "better experience". But no one can guarantee that the stuff they collect actually ends on your better experience and not get sold to companies. And even if they don't sell it, they can still get hacked and leaked. So in a way or another your data is still in danger. 😰

    • @MrGTAmodsgerman
      @MrGTAmodsgerman 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If you pay for something and you still get ads, then something about the people who accept this is wrong. Why you pay for a bad product? And if you live in the EU, you can't just collect data without knowing what for anymore. It's a law to tell it, thanks to the EU. So all you have to do is read the contracts and pop ups.

    • @mgjfile
      @mgjfile 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MrGTAmodsgerman any Company can theoretically play with your stuff, even if the contract says the opposite, until they get caught. (Avast, for example).
      About the ads in paying services, they simply change contact after you purchased the product/service (MarineTraffic, for example, I paid the app years ago, suddenly few years ago ads appeared, then the app became free to everyone with ads, basically the same experience you have on the website via browser, and no, I cannot choose to stay on the older version with no ads, basically my payment was a donation). And many other example exist. Not saying that EVERYONE do this, but is more and more common. EU commission does help sometimes and the fact that no one else join the fight is ridiculous.

Even some of the teachers used it in order to access youtube. 11:32 This isn't true at all, there are protocols like L2TP and PPTP either don't require encryption or don't support it at all.
    Proxy servers don't have to be unencrypted, both forward and reverse proxies can be used for TLS termination. This is how web proxies like Fortinet's FortiProxy and CDN providers like Cloudflare work.
