Massive (the monetization company here) reached out to clarify some things, and that they are a legitimate company, a few comments I made in the video may have created confusion their which I'm going to clear up. The customers for this service are scraping for business intelligence purposes, not anything nefarious. 1. The ability to send emails over residential proxies is very strictly restricted and monitored for a few customers who need such a thing. 2. They have worked with antivirus vendors to be certified as safe, hence why there are no detections. 3. Nobody gets access to the residential network without doing KYC verification, that was the main concern I had and they addressed it. 4. Just a wording clarification, I said "sell IPs", to be clear this is in the sense that they can scrape through user IPs, not that user ips are shared with anyone. In addition I asked about the past involvement in mining and scientific computing. They explained that it was a previous model, and that they pivoted to proxies due to supply & demand. The company has a goal of allowing monetization of freeware without ads, and to be more privacy respecting. Would love to see your thoughts on this as a monetization model. My personal opinion is it depends hugely on the userbase and how well balanced usage of ips is. Desktop bandwidth is generally cheap, so it shouldn't really impact the users, but I would avoid if you're on a limited dataplan. The worst thing that is likely to happen to users is getting capchas on some sites, if they had a lot of scraping.

Yeah, I mostly agree. I mean if it’s disclosed in the installer it’s not as bad, but still most people who accept it do it on accident. Even as someone who is pretty computer literate and doesn’t install stupid stuff usually I’ve been guilty of accidentally installing a add on program by clicking accept without realizing until I noticed a weird program on my computer installed alongside what I meant to install. Luckily there wasn’t any malware in it as far as I could tell and I was able to uninstall it and wipe the temp files it created.
