My brother was a master wood worker and any time he had to fill, he would collect the wood dust into a bucket and mix it with wood glue to fill with. Once it was dried and sanded, and stained, or painted, it was just beautiful. I think your table turned out really nice.

Merina, dear sweet sister, yours and Shane's effort is amazing. Would suggest you use a coarser grain sand paper till you get the look you want. Then go to a finer grain sandpaper in increments until it's baby bottom smooth. Love your choice of Jacobean. Great work! Both of you.

Your remodel videos always make me feel like I can take on the world. They are so empowering and makes me feel like I can do anything just like y’all can. I am always so amazed at how amazing y’all’s projects turn out. The table turned out amazing, and I knew when you prayed over that table it was going to turn out beautiful just like you said. With God, we can do anything. I absolutely love watching your channel, and your channel also reminds me of that song “Let Me Tell You About My Jesus.” You are a mentor to me when it comes to sharing God with others. I’m also love in TN, so it feels like home when watching one of your videos. God is good all the time!

I will share a tip that someone once shared with me! If you use a frosting piping bag with a tip that is just smaller than the space you are filling….. it goes really fast! You can use a sandwich baggie in a pinch! You can also use a baggie to squish the compound into the crevice to save your fingers! Rubber gloves would work as well❤️

You can also frame the area to be filled with painter’s tape so nothing gets on the rest of the wood.

  • @melanieholtzclaw387

You can use painters tape on either sides of the cracks then fill in with the wood filler & when you take the tape off you will be left with a clean line only in the crack. Hope this helps 😊y’all did a great job as always!

The next time you do a wood project where you need to use filler, fill the crack with wood glue and then immediately sand over the wood and crack together. The sawdust will attach to the glue and fill the crack for a better finish. Plus it will stain the same color as the rest of the project!

Marina, on the wood filler, and I’ve learned this the hard way over a long period of time. I’ve been a single mom on a really tight budget, i found that if I put a tube of wood filler in a caulking gun (I found a tube of wood filler at Lowe’s), and then used my caulking gun with that tube of wood filler in it, I can get the wood filler just in the crack without it seeping all over the place. Then after I fill the crack, I take a damp cloth or damp sponge, and the key here is, it has to be damp, not wet, and wipe over the crack, while the wood filler while the filler is still slightly wet, then leave it alone to dry, I don’t have that seeping of wood filler, messing up the grain of my wood. I have also found, before I figured out the caulking gun and that you can buy a tube of wood filler, I had a cake decorating tube and a round cake decorating tip I could screw on the frosting bag and put the wood filler out of the can in there, and squeeze it through the tip into the crack. When you use a cake bag with a tip, I did put the wood filler out of the can into a bowl with you so few drops of water to just barely fit it down so it would go through the tube of the cake kit easier, and that worked perfectly like a charm. I wished I could just ring you on the phone before you went to do it with your finger but this was all I could think of to reach you. Hope this helps. I know a lot of people may disagree with me, but it worked for me on endless projects, so I thought I’d pass it onto you because it looks painful today what you were going through. Lol ;-)

I like all the others really love the commitment to your projects and how far you have come as DIYers. The table and benches are gorgeous! Now to the black wall. I have never liked the black. I would go back to white or maybe even the grey you used on the tables for the main color and the Jacobean for the wooden battens. But it’s your house, do what you makes you happy. Love you guys. Love how your love for each other as a couple and as parents and definitely for Jesus shines the light of His love to us all. You have a lot of comments already, but i just wanted to give my 2 cents. My husband builds furniture so I have a few tips:
    1. If you dont like applying wood filler with the putty knife, apply with your fingers and then scrape the excess with the knife. Less to sand later.
    2. Keep the sander flat, dont angle to get a deeper sand, you will leave divets. Just keep it moving flat over the whole surface.
    3. Apply a wood conditioner/prestain. It will help the stain go on more evenly.
    4. Sand between every coat of poly with 220 grit for a nice smooth finish.

We had some drywall work done and the dust managed to find its way into every nook and cranny of every inch of the house, cupboards and all. Then I learned that cutting and sanding wood inside was not a lot different … never ever again ;). Another thing that could help - u prolly know this already but just in case you don't - is if you use a rougher grit sandpaper to cut thru things faster. Start with 80 grit then work your way up to 220 to smooth it out! So glad you re done it to get the wood filler smudges out I think it's definitely worth it ! It turned out sooo pretty 😊🤩💕

Hi lovely, I renovate furniture for a living. The trick is to mix in the sawdust from your piece into your wood filler: about 35 - 40% sawdust to filler. You do still need to ensure you sand it all off the surface but then your filler will take the stain evenly. You can also mix a bit of the stain in with the filler & sawdust. Another trick is to wipe off any excess filler with a damp cloth before it's dry xx

Hi Merina. I've been watching you forever, Love your family & you make me smile. I'm very quiet. I rarely comment but I'm here. Here is a easy tip.. Put the wood filler in a freezer baggie, cut a hole & put in like a thin layer of cake frosting. Smooth over with a damp sponge as you would with a make up blender. This should help and easiest fix and moving forward. It works.

Also it's awesome you involved your kids in it here and there because in years to come they'll remember helping their mom with the table and benches!

When I first started watching this video & realized what your plan was , I could have told you that this was going to happen because it’s happened to me!! Sometimes, a lot of the time things & ideas in our head turn out the way they are suppose too- but in real life it’s just not the way it is in our head…. Just something for you to remember. That’s why ALL my eating tables are flat & smooth!! I wish I could have been able to lived near you or been your neighbor so you could have used your valuable time more wisely- like on another project!!❤
I love all the things you have done in your mobile home! It looks gorgeous!!❤❤❤

Lol… as soon as you started talking about the wood filler after you had already stained and polyurethaned it, I said to myself, “Merina is going to redo that table. I just know it. She is not one to settle for something that she can make even better.” ❤

I always use an old bank card, credit card, store card or something like that to put things like filler in and scrape over the top with the edge after. It's so much easier than a knife as it bends more. Loving the project and watching from the UK. 🎉

Table and benches look absolutely fabulous. So this is my opinion on the black wall. When you did it, I immediately thought the wall looked like it had moved in 5 feet. Definitely made the area look smaller…but that’s me, I am a light and airy kind of girl.

Wow! 😮 Merina, you did a great job on the table and Shane making the benches. It looks beautiful and cheaper than buying a new table with chairs. On that dark wall it would be so nice to put a scripture on it. 👩🏾👍🏾

Merina! I've had a career of finishing furniture.
1/ sand with 180 grit first and make sure you have gotten ALL the wood filler off. You should only have it in the cracks.
    2/ sand with 120 grit.
    3/ sand with 400 grit
4/ wipe entire table with tac cloth.
    5/ stain!
