*Profit* was five years too early and on Fox. That's it. That's the only thing wrong with it. In that tiny handful of episodes they predicted EVERY single prestige TV trend of the 21st century to date.
Tony Danza’s character on Taxi wasn’t planned to be named Tony but the producer was worried Danza wasn’t bright enough to remember to respond to a different name.
Profit could've become something. I remember my high school English teacher coming into class raving about it and comparing the lead character to Iago from Othello.
I love these trips down Memory Lane. I was a teen in the nineties and even though I’ve never heard of most of these shows, they still make me nostalgic.
Pacific Palisades was a great show. I saw every episode, it had a bad time slot, and it didn't premiere till the spring of 1997. Fox pulled it and it came back in the summer of 97, with the remaining episodes. Given the chance this show could have became Melrose Place, the addition of Joan Collins was a great idea. The show also is rare because it actually had a series finale.
I remember watching Pacific Palisades. I gravitated to it for being a primetime soap from Spelling. I still remember one of the bigger storylines being the collapse of the local mall.
I was an extra on 2 episodes of Pacific Palisades. The first time as a ticket agent at the airport with Joan Collins and Kimberly Davies. The second time I was a high school student, even though I was 33. That was shot at an actual high school near Pepperdine University. The craft services were top notch on Aaron Spelling productions. And the catering for the meals was also excellent. I had also worked on one episode of Melrose Place. . It was shot on location at a park in Oxnard. I was happy to be working on a show that I was into at the time. One of my extra friends did a scene at the studio in Valencia. She got to see the apartment building set with the swimming pool. I would have loved to see that set and the apartment sets. Some of the sets I got to work in were very impressive. And if it is for a show that doesn't last, they usually get torn down when the show is cancelled.
I didn't discover Profit until it came out on DVD and it just happened to become one of my favourite short lived shows EVER. Maybe even my all time one season wonder. This show was just ridiculously ahead of its time, if it had come out a couple of years ago it would have been bigger than Succession.
Yes--that show was on when I was in college when the internet was in its infancy (1996-ish) and we used to watch it. It was one that messed with your head. Psychological manipulation resulting from childhood trauma was really what it was about. The show was underrated in my opinion
Profit was FANTASTIC and I hate that it never got another season because it definitely deserves it. When you see the end of the first episode it is so devastating. All of my family liked it and watched if I remember correctly, it is so underrated. I agree with the critics here, Melrose Place was fun trash. It is what it is, sadly it ruined 90210's original tone near the end. I stopped watched it largely after they copied Melrose Place's tone for it, it was such a waste. I think they decided to copy this tone to up the ratings because Melrose at the time was huge ratings for FOX.
And it had Annie Potts as Michelle Pfeiffer's character from the movie. Hard to believe that that's the VA for the Little Bo Peep figurine in the Toy Story movies (well, just 1, 2, and 4).
Joe Lara married mega church preacher, Gwen Shamblyn, who basically conned her 'flock' out of millions using prayer and God as a diet plan, mainly for her money and the large audience she already had. Shambyn (I might be spelling it wrong) basically lead a cult. There's a great Hulu documentary about her and a made of TV movie that goes hard if you want to see how hard Lara fell and get to know the mega church preacher. It's fascinating.
I taped EZ streets, and shared with coworkers. We all agreed it was so good. Didn't Pantoliano have a freezer with hands in it to plant fingerprints ? 😂
I first saw Parker Posey on As the World Turns! Was she a long lost daughter of Hal? I watched TV that season and had no idea she had a show, or Brian Bosworth, or Tim Curry! The only one i saw was Profit, which was so far ahead of its time!
I forgot how successful Baywatch was at the time. So successful it incentivized networks to greenlight a bunch of shitty knockoffs and fill the airwaves with garbage.
Tim Curry and Malcolm McDowell were both wasted in separate sitcoms in the same year. Shame they didn't find another British actor, and it would be a trifecta. Profit really was ahead of its time. Antiheroes are a dime a dozen nowadays, but back then, it took nerve, and the show suffered for it. And it's amazing how prophetic Bryant Gumbel turned out.
Well jeez The Review, I thought I was a Tim Curry fan but here I am completely unaware of Over The Top! I vaguely remember the Tony Danza Show, they really did keep trying with him didn't they?
For a stretch of the 90s I either worked a lot of nights or didn’t own a TV, so I don’t remember any of these. Before that I didn’t watch much tv in high school either. Looks like I didn’t miss much. Tony Danza got stuck playing the same character for 20 years in several different productions. I always wondered how he could have done as an assistant DA in Law & Order or some role along those lines.
I didn't watch any of these shows, but I did eventually see The Boz in that action movie you mentioned, Stone Cold. It's pretty heavy and very violent, with surprisingly strong performances. Would recommend!

We go out of our way to try to cover things most channels would skip over 😂. So you're probably not alone in that. It takes more effort and creativity to pull some of these off due to poor quality VHS recordings and lack of production info. Often you could watch 10 other channels that do lists and see the same 10 covered by copying and pasting in whatever Wikipedia says as a "script". We like to try to present a more realistic look back at what was on tv at the time. Thanks for watching and for commenting too!

My favorite 90s bad action movie. YOU GOTTA SEE IT. It is... everything you could ever ask for. Rogue undercover cop! Gigantic leather jackets! Egregious explosions! Hilarious violence! Minor characters played by people who were either on ALL the meth or decided this was their chance, at an ACTOR, to go big and show their range! I swear to you, this movie is AMAZING. Lance had to rewrite all of his dialogue because the script was even worse and it was just incoherent biblical references. ❤❤❤

Wild to see Carrell's character's mannerisms and accent on Over The Top being basically proto Gru.

One of the main actors in EZ streets ironically or unironically did get cast in The Sopranos in the last season, I can't remember the actor's name, it is Joe something.
'Profit' was ahead of its time and wasted on network TV. It could have been 'Dexter' before 'Dexter'.
Pearl wasn't bad. It got a full season.
