Vauxhall Corsa VXR review - Carbuyer (Opel Corsa OPC)

  • The new Vauxhall Corsa VXR hot hatch is the latest model in the Vauxhall range to get the hardcore VXR treatment. It packs 202bhp from its 1.6-litre turbocharged engine, which is more than its closest rivals - the Ford Fiesta ST and VW Polo GTI.
    There's plenty of clues as to the car's performance, including a racy bodykit, big alloy wheels, Recaro seats and plenty of sporty add-ons available to spec as options. Is it as good as the Ford? We find out in this video.

    I bought a Corsa D VXR back in 2011 with the optional 18 inch alloys. Overall, it was a great car that suffered from no faults apart from very soft paint on the front end, which I had resprayed before replacing it for an M135i. That car was a step up in terms of comfort and outright performance but it wasn’t what I would describe as more fun. You could throw the corsa into corners and drive it on the limit in a way that you just couldn’t with the bmw, for fear of having your license revoked or flying into a hedge. I kept that car for 13 months and decided to try the Abarth 595 Competizione which was a cracking little car but one that had a terrible driving position. I’m currently in a Golf r estate and everyone would have you believe that it’s the best new car you’ll ever drive this side of £40k and whilst that might be true, I’m craving the cheap and cheerful vxr e as something I can enjoy having lots of fun with, perhaps tuning up to 250bhp ish and not feeling like the car is driving me almost. I personally find that the different driving modes and dsg box in he likes of my R remove a lot of the fun from driving. Yes, the car is brutal from point to point and it’s fun having that much power on top but the sensation of working harder to get the most out of the likes of a corsa vxr is, for me, what driving is all about. I guess, people shouldn’t judge the corsa vxr on image alone as buyers come from various backgrounds and buy for different reasons, but mostly, for the love of driving.

    An upfront and honest review. I really like the Carbuyer reviews. The VXR looks awesome on the outside and it's decent enough inside for a single person. The one thing that disappoints me with a lot of new cars is the lack of climate control as standard and some don't even offer it as an extra. I drive an 02 plate Seat Leon SE which has climate control. You look at these new cars with all this technology which I'm probably never going to use but something simple like climate control is absent. It's mad!

    The older VXR looked so much nicer :-( I was toying with the idea of getting an older VXR but decided on getting a new ST instead, much nicer to drive in my opinion, sounds a bit more refined too and doesn't make your ears bleed on the motorway. The Corsa may be a little faster but I'd rather stick with my ST and get the Mountune pack then I'm sorted. I guess it's all about personal preference at the end of the day, personally I think the new Fiesta ST is absolutely gorgeous and I struggle to stop looking at mine when I'm walking away from it in public car parks haha.

    After 3 years of daily driving I have to say: funny, responsive, stiff, agile and quite light FWD hothatch. Definitely needs much more character on factory exhaust. Must have equipment is the 4H-TECH shortshifter which makes much better car for small amount of money. Do not hasitate about the factory performance pack! No doubt you NEED LSD and Brembo brakes. With this you just need to switch brake pads for a little bit more aggressive ones (Ferodo), probably lower springs (Eibach) and you are fully ready for a proper track day! In comparison with Fiesta ST Corsa has more grip on track thanks to 215 tires. I love it and I am sorry the production had to be finished. :(

    Good review overall but some of the problems mentioned didn't make any sense. First the cup holders are meant for cup size objects and that's the case for all cars out there. It's only natural that leaving a bottle open in the cup holders is gonna cause the water to spill. Then there's the MPG. Well of course the MPG is gonna be lower than some of its rivals since it has 10-20 hp more than the Gti or the Fiesta. 29 mpg while rocking the guts out of the car isn't half bad.

    Corsa's aren't known for their acceleration. I've had a 2010 sxi 1.4 and now a 2015 active 1.2. I test drove all designs of the corsa, the only one with umpth would be the VXR. However, much like the ltd edition, the VXR is small in comparison to other corsa 3 doors. It eats alot of fuel and I personally just can't justify the cost of insurance. it's a nice little car but it's not a family one, I would have been on the VXR if I didn't have children. Small, easily zips around and can be in/out of small spaces lol

      It depends what you want out the car really
      I'm going to get coilovers on mine eventually but defo needs the diff and brembos for my taste the only reason I don't have them is because I wanted a 68 reg and they're super rare if not near enough impossible to get with a performance pack so settled for the standard car with the only option on it being leather and the carbon pack
      If the suspension is a stiff as my corsa clubsport is then I'd get why folk wouldn't get it really
      My astra rides stiff too with its b14s, 24mm farb and a rarb fitted with poly bushes
      Eventually mine will see that full treatment minus the xlubsport as its startling totally original

      I own an Opel (which you guys call Vauxhall in Britain). I've driven it for 3 years now / 50 000 km and not a single issue aside from the mandatory servicing. It's reliable and very economical (though this VXR is clearly less so). Same with my friend who's had one for 45000 km now and he has never had anything to complain about. My mum's Audi A1 in comparison stated showing issues at barely 5000Km. How utterly unacceptable is that for a car that costs 2 to 3 times more and makes such big claims about quality and reliability?

    I'll stick to my 1.3 cdti Corsa - a superbly reliable car with +65 mpg. If I want to go fast I just wheel out my bike ... 0-60 in under 4 seconds absolutely no competition!!

    Why do people care if people get PCP what's so bad about it?

    • @rachelx8305
      @rachelx8305 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Fezza4u Basically, it's young men who get judged for this. Reason why: a 19-15 year old man driving a Corsa is most likely going to be picking up 16-19 year old girls and taking then to McDonalds before going off for a f*ck. They're also presumed to be on a payment plan/finance for the car because they're not well off enough to buy a car outright.
      Basically, people just like to judge the younger generation for driving popular cars and getting on with our lives. Don't let it get to you.

    • @oddities-whatnot
      @oddities-whatnot 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most cars are purchased through PCP deals. If you are going to keep a car for the long term, best off with cash or hire purchase, but if you want to trade it in when warranty expires, PCP makes better financial sense as you wont have lost thousands in actual cash and most people on PCP deals, change their cars on average at the 2 year mark. You can of course, just pay off the balloon payment at the end of the agreement if you wanted to keep it. There has to come a point in your life when you stop paying for new cars. Get a good reliable well built one and keep it. I dont do many miles so a Subaru Forester for example, would do me for 15 years easy. You will save a fortune in the long run by not keep trading cars in.

    • @Mamsaturatdevoi
      @Mamsaturatdevoi 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +z00h I liked this video for the excellent review. It covered absolutely every aspect about the car, warned the possible buyers of what to look out for, and it was overall a very objective and professional review. I would never buy this car, but I think that everyone that rates a video should rate it for how the video is made and presented, not for what it actually presents.
      Just put yourself in the shoes of this reviewer who made an excellent review, and see that your video has a lot of dislikes. How would that make you feel? Remember that by pressing the 'Dislike' button, you 'Dislike' the video, not the car.
      The place for disliking the car is in the comments section.
