Well if we're talking single player yeah it makes sense to cube high runes but on B.Net it would be a waste to cube them instead of trading them with someone who may need them. Especially high runes.

If we're talking single player - there's only so many Ists you can use.
Personally I pick up every rune that drops, once I have 4 of the same runes I cube 3 and put it a row higher until I reach the rune I need.
Small runes up to Ral for crafting, everything else up to Vex for BotD.
I realise it is probably more efficient to just ignore everything and keep grinding LK, but for those who just can't handle being a "human bot" I think it's a pleasant and satisfying way of playing.
I do this as well, and with my gems too. Idk why but it's SUPER satisfying when I hit a chain of cubing. Like, one chipped leads to enough flawed to cube up and so on all the way to perfect. Or like one time I had a sol rune chain cube up to an ist, felt badass

If you want hard way in single player, i only suggest you to get Enigma runes. And for sure..making some low runes to ist will make you a total badass

Cubing any level of rune is worth it if you need the next level rune in question. That's the bottom line. I love D2, but the randomness of drops can be truly insane. You could play an entire ladder and not see the one rune you need. You do what you gotta do to cube your way up and get the rune you need. The way I view rune cubing in D2 is that it's an open option for people to choose - it's not a question of whether it's worth it.
completely agreed. this video is just bad and makes no sense. you can only get so much use out of Ist's at a certain point, and like you said, relying on a target HR to drop is like winning the lottery. By cubing up, you're actually progressing towards a potential target rune. This video makes no sense.
Not always. There may be demand on the Market for the Runes you use and an offer for thoose you seek in the end. Some are better cubed, others Traded. You would be astonished what you get for a complete "Insight" with a fitting Weapon, even if it is the Basic Version. And the same goes for the mid- and higher Tiers.
@@dubson965 Lmao, this video makes perfect sense. Would you cube 2 bers into a jah? No, you wouldn't, because that one ber is worth more than a jah. Singular runes hold more value on their own which is why a vex for example, is usually worth a gul and an ist even though 2 guls equals a vex. Same with how a Lo is worth an ohm and a vex because ohm can be used for cta and vex for hoto. You can't discount the different uses for each rune. Obviously if you're playing on single player without Plugy then it might be a slightly different situation but it's pretty much never worth it to cube past ist because of how useful and ist is on it's own.

Cubing would cost four, so you basically lost an ist. If your on single player tho and you want to craft a specific runeword. Then yeah cube away.

On SP pluggy, I think that if you really need to make a CtA, Grief or HotO, it is worth cubing up to runes like Lo, Ohm, Vex and Mal. It can take you a long time before any of those runes just drop, meanwhile the immediate benefits of having Grief, CtA or HotO are well worth it IMO because they will significantly improve your character.
I was lucky enough to find a Vex, but was missing Pul for Hoto. So I cubed up 3 Fal for a Lem, and already had 2 Lems. Then 3 Lems to make Pul and game changer in single player run to finally make a Hoto.
I was doing lower kurast to get high runes to make Enigma (up to Ber) it was becoming to exhausting and found two Gul runes and wanted to cube them to get Vex (I didn't have Ruby to do so). Kept doing LK to get Ruby, but nothing so went Cows. In the first or second Cow run didn't find Ruby but got a Jah rune.
To get ruby the chaos sanctuary is the best place. In Normal.

I always find cubing worth it personally, I pick up almost every rune I see for the cube! I agree though I wouldn't cube ists for guls, but dropped guls for vex and ohm absolutely lol. Great vid as always man!

Just looking at him droping this um rune 1 square away(litterally several millimeters away) from the cube made my entire body recoil in my chair... I think the question is very dependent on which runes you need the most (ex. if you need an ist to make infinity but you dont more than one mal for anything). I think you're on the right track that its generally not worth cubing 2 ists to make gul (which seems to be part of one of your main points) - as, gul is not so useful other than for cubing to vex - it still is rather situationally dependent at the same time, someone who dosent use 6 ist phaseblade but dosent use ist for mf in armor either, might have quite a few excess ists that they want towards cubing vexs for hotos (as those are useful on quite a few builds). Additionally, I think we probably agree that runes are ONLY worth cubing to in so far as your likely to use them (so that should factor into the equations also) - but not to say that this is a sufficient reason for cubing 6 ists and a gul into an ohm for example, because you probably have more use for the 6 ists. So I doubt theres any one conclusive answer to your question but there's plausible answers to similar, easier-to-address questions.
Just don't ignore any rune to have a continuous production of runes. It pays off.

Great info, is it worth saving lower runes to cube up to Lem? I usually just get a messy stash if I do that, but I'm not using Pluggy. I grab every rune and gem that drops no matter the quality, goes into the stash and I convert them at some point leaving one or two of the lower runes in case I ever need them but in the end you're guaranteed high runes vs potentially doing thousands of runs for nothing almost nothing.

My Tac is to keep 3 of each - and all others get Crafted or Traded. As Higher, as less I cling to them and get willing to trade them for what I want - if I get the whole Shebang (if I want for Example a Wealth and an Insight for Norm), I do not care if I throw a Zod into your Face and neither does the majority of the Players.
As you have said yourself: I think it depends on what rune you currently need. If you can turn three runes you don't need into one that you do, by all means go ahead

I keep and cube up ALL runes I find. Low, mid, high, doesn’t matter. I found it worth it in the long run.

Depends on the volume that you’ve accumulated during the run.. if ur able to cube all the way up and net urself a couple jah and lo runes and make a dream or Phoenix, compared to the amount of time it would take to farm those runes based on rng drop rates, I think it’s worth it if ur trying to farm out those high runes to complete a char build

I would have made 2 vex with it. I consider highrunes to start at vex, which is a really useful rune for a lot of rune words, like hoto, botd or even coolwords like death, destruction, silence
For single player it's like whatever to each their own. But for multi-player that's a mistake. A Vex normally trades for 2/2.5 Ist.

I consider Gul to be a high rune solely on the basis it raises max res. One could further divide high runes into those which raise max res and those that do not. Further, Pul starts the mid rune delineation as only two are needed to cube up to the next rune. One could go the other way and divide rune tiers on the basis of chipped, flawed, whole, and flawless gems; to me the gems themselves are ultimately inconsequential.
Back in the Day..c2003-2005 I would cube Up to MAL but not IST. IST could be traded pretty easily and was in high demand. GUL I would cube. I always got a ton of GUL runes, and most people back then didn't classify GUL as a high Rune because the running opinion on GUL was, it was pretty useless, so when necessary I would cube my GUL's to VEX's. VEX was in far higher demand that GUL and far easier to trade and far more valuable as a runeword component.
For people that like to trade, my opinionated HR Hierarchy is Mal*, Ist*, Vex**, Ohm, Lo, Sur, Ber, Jah, Cham***, Zod***
Jah should be regarded as the absolute best HR with Ber just being a scratch behind. You could definitely trade a Ber for a Jah.
Why is this? Because of enigma. Best runeword in the game and Jah just so happens to be a harder find than a Ber because Sur's can cube into a Ber.
* - Useful runes but high enough drop rate that people won't want to trade Ohm-Jah for them. Might get lucky with a Vex depending on the buyer.
** - Some people Would trade Ohm - Sur for this one, but it still has a decent enough drop rate that they wouldn't consider trading Ber or Jah
*** - Not as practical, but rarest runes. Some people would trade a Vex-Sur for these if needed, and I wouldn't recommend taking cheaper.
There are so many uses for Pul, Um, Mal, Ist that I never cube those up. Cubing below that is only done if I started fresh and really need something, like I will cube Tals to get more Rals for crafting amulets, and I will cube Amns to Sol for blood rings, or rerolling Insight. After a while, I don't pick up Eth and below, Ith, Shael, Dol, Io, Lum, Ko or Fal runes. And after I have around 20 Lem runes and 7-8 Ko, I stop picking up those as well. All the other low runes have tremendous value in bulk, when I want to do a crafting session or reroll spirits/insights.
It all depends on what you need tho, for example if you have 4 ist runes and need a vex for hodo(or whatever you need it for)then you would do it right?
If you are on single player sure. But if you are on battlenet its much better to just trade the Ist instead of cubing them.
I'll cube up to ist but I'll always keep myself with a supply of Um runes.
I have 3 Ist, an Ohm and a Lo rune, but no Mal rune and no Vex rune. Both I would really need for Heart of the Oak and Call to Arms. Damn, Diablo luck can be so crazy. You can get a hand full of the really rare stuff, but you can struggle to find more common stuff, that would really help you though.
Those flawed gems are hard to find
Cows//Trav are good spots to find gems.
Act 1 normal. Run a bunch of gem runs through the pits and caves. You'll find plenty.
Cubing any rune Lem+ is worth it if you have too many of them
for instance, i have no idea what to do with all the Guls that I find.
If I find a Sur now, I will cube 10 Guls, 1 Vex 1 Ohm into a Ber.
I cubed up to ber from just countess runs, it was not worth it lol.
@Shael Utah You wouldnt cube past IST, you would get more value trading up from people looking for IST runes. Ive seen Vex be traded for Ist a few times at the highest.

Cubing up to Um or dropped Mal to Ist and maybe cubing dropped Guls to Vex. Um and Ist are too useful even beyond their runewords to cube imo

Well if you are into trading you sure can trade more efficiently than that. The real factor here would be time invested to qube vs time invest to trade. and then see the results. But there has to be a time limit. In theory, you could generate infinite value trading with infinite time.
It's a pity you can't cube down :D Like, I really need Lo runes for grief and fortitude, but haven't found a single one yet. But I do have two Surs.
There are some rubes that are more useful than others. I use those as endpoints for cubing. Lem for me is an end point. Hel is and endpoint. Ith is and endpoint (caster belt). Ohm is an endpoint etc
Um and Ist seem like obvious endpoints especially on Multiplayer
I've resorted to doing this as even hell mode won't give me beyond the normal runes and rarely nightmare runes.
I cube to somewhere in the pul-ist range too. Even though they are not HR's you can still use them as a from of currency on ladder
Honestly the trading value of lem is more than half the trading value of pul.
Pul is useful for hoto and not much else
Lem is used often in upping items. And since they are so close together in rank/level, most people regard them as ALMOST the same value, rather than one being 3x the value of the other.
If anything most people will regard 2x lem as AT LEAST the value of a pul, If not more (look at how they translate in value when trading for keys, for example)
Two puls is about an um because again pul has little use and um is CRAAAAAZY useful for res
Um in trading is not half the value of a mal, clearly, but if you are hard pressed to find a mal you can kinda justify it but not really.
Two mal for an ist is crazy. You can easy trade mal pul for ist, or and if not mal um
How about cubing according to which runes you've got more than enough of into the runes you need to build up further your characters. If you have 20 ist but no CTA, i'd cube some into a single ohm rune so i can farm that much more efficiently.
If you play singleplayer / SSF it might make sense. But if you play online I wouldn't cube them. Like 2 Ist runes are worth more than 1 Gul.

Would be fine if uncubing still only cave you 1 tune. So if you really needed a rune but have a higher rune, you can still get that rune at a cost.

3xlem -> pul isn't worth it. Not only is lem more useful then pul as you can upgrade items but having to use 3 instead of 2 makes it not worth doing imo. 2xum -> mal also isn't worthwhile as um runes can be pretty useful on their own for socketing resistances.
Not sure why people do not understand that cubing runes, is crucial to getting high runes.
Anyone know why when I exit the cube using the space bar it doesn't take me back to the stash? It exits me to the regular game screen. Cannot find a fix for this. Anyone?

I think it was totally worth it. Maybe even worth a new player getting 1 vex for hoto if they were just starting out. I agree too with ist being a good stopping point. Gul don't have much use and vex is pretty easy to LK

I personally cube only Lem and superior and only if needed.
For example if I will find a Ber I definitely go to cube my 2 Lo and 1 Sur to make my first Infinity.
Just stared playing Diablo 2 after being a casual 10ish years ago. Is D2 is all about that? Doing same things hundreds or thousands of times? To get some runes?
Not at all. To me it was about the role playing experience. These guys do those things because they have a certain objective of collecting all runes, all items, all runewords etc. But the game can be enjoyed without those objectives without any issue.

I am cursed at getting high runes, spent months farming LK and best rune I ever had drop is a Mal. Have lots of Thul runes, not sure why that one drops like crazy through all difficulties?
I've found dozens of Lum and quite a few high runes in about 5000 runs in lk sur and ohm and just recently I found a ber but ive found 24 Gul runes as well so guls are the bane of my existence

I personally dont trade any items so i always save my chipped gems and cube low runes to mid runes and so on. Have managed to cube 2 jah in d2r, but to be fair i dont play as much if I had heaps of hours to play I think it would be worth cubing most runes
I don’t like cubing, if someone needs an um, most likely they’d take 2 puls, and having 2 puls just gives you more options in terms of buying items if you’re still at that level

The only way this is worth it, is by playing plugy solo. You'll never have the stash space to do this online and this is why d2 failed in this aspect of the game.
Personally, I cube low/mid to Ist and stop. Saving [Ist] runes for twin MF Phase Blades, mainly. Everything that drops above Ist, I cube to what I need for Fortitude, Breath of the Dying, etc. Any high rune Rune Word I'm aiming for really.

At the very least it's still a better system than D3 which requires the use of sets.

Worth it? Quite Simple: Look up what Players Want and need. Where the Demand is. It is usually the Stuff you had whished for before or whish for now - plus the Stuff you will whish for, but that Stuff does not matter so much.
In case of the Runes, there are Runes seeked out and ones that may be "higher" but, in this regards, are totally crap and should be crafted. Also, selling in "Sets" often comes Handy.
So, there are Runes in all "Tiers" I do not craft and ones I instantly craft as soon as I can and it makes sense.

I know that I’m wrong and that rationally, it’s a fools errand… But what the hell else are you gonna do? Vendor them? Hell no! Even mid runes are too rare for that, so rather than sitting around and taking up extra space… Yes, I cube all runes. Somehow, even though it’s close to impossible, it still seems more likely than getting high runes to actually drop

That many pul and um runes are worth a lot more trading than 6 ist runes.
Cubing anything is worth it offline, but online I don't cube Ist or higher (except Guls), you should just trade at that point.
What do ya do if lower kurast doesn't give you runes? I have gotten maybe 1 sur rune in 6 months ths playing and in the last month my highest rune is hel rune. Not even from the super chests. Lower kurast is dead to me so countess is the best way for me or I wouldn't have the items I have
Cubing is tricky. cubing to make the next rune that you need might be ok but cubing just to make higher rune is not necessarily a good idea.
it's like picking up every El rune because it's possible to make high rune if i pick up enough low rune and cube them.
except that to make a simple Pul rune just from many El the number of El rune required is slightly over a billion.

So that's what you have to keep in mind when cubing. don't greed for the hope of high rune it's faster to just get some loot and trade for the runes you need. You need to know trade values.
I cube everything above Io. I usualy hold back at Ist, Vex and Lo until I can make the leap to the next tho.
No word of a lie. Been playing since release and the best rune I got from lower kurust was an um rune. And no, it didn’t come from a chest. But rather a log because I don’t have enigma and have to walk and check everything on the way. True story
how do we know if an item is worth putting in the runes? How do we know what order they should be in? Where to even being with this? Seems very easy to make one mistake and mess it all up O_o
I find the hardest thing is to find the gems. Countess runs are good for runes but are there any good places to farm for gems?
LK runs. Almost always get 2/3 flawless gems. Specifically focusing on the camp-fire chests of course

Hrs should only be cubed 2 to 1, but never 4 to 1, better farming.
Any runes that require gems, is too much work.. And likely not worth hassle (Um runes are like main form of currency, so why cube them up? That’d be like converting Chaos Orbs into a Regal Orb in PoE.)

Offline it's totally worth upping excessive mrs. It can take a very long time to find an hr. Online it's not worth it as many people are playing on the same server as you are. There are plenty of mfers on ladder. The first ladder season 2.4 is on its way.

I only cube runes as long as I have at least 2 left after I cube them, ex I will only cube shael when I have 5 of them
I keep at least 1 of every rune. When I get a 4th rune, (or 3rd) i cube up
Can someone explain why I rememeber high runes differently? When I played it was 3x pul = hr, 2x um = hr, and everything else after was valued equally while some people were weird about Zod, just zod tho but most took them as hr currency anyways.
High runes are determined on a combination of rune drop rate and player usefulness. Um's and Pul's are useful runes but drop often enough to not be considered HR's. A lot of people do not consider Mal to be a HR, and I somewhat agree because of drop rate, but I would never cube it into an Ist because of the useful runewords it can create (CTA/Grief/Infinity/Beast/Brand). I personally wouldn't consider Ist a HR even though it has good base useage and is useful for many powerful runewords, and I wouldn't recommend cubing it into a Gul unless you really need a Vex. Gul is considered to be a useless rune even though it drops less frequently than Ist, and would be considered the first actual HR, but since it has no practical useage, no one considers it a HR and this is a rune you can definely cube into a Vex. Vex - Zod are the actual hierarchy of HR's for most of the D2 community. There are a few people that don't care for Vex that much either though, and would rather consider Ohm - Zod to be the HR's of D2. To answer your question with Zod, people are weird with it because of the practicality of the rune. It is a great rune for Ethereal items and the occassional BotD runeword (or EBotDZ), but if someone were to pay an Ohm for a Zod, it feels a bit of a jip because Ohm has way more practical uses than a Zod. Zod is a very End-Gamish rune. Cham is also a little finicky with people for similar reasons, though it can make Doom which is a popular runeword. Side Note: If you obtain 2xSur runes, it may not be a bad idea to cube them into a Ber rune unless you really need to use the Sur rune or you figure you can get more value trading the Sur rune.
@@godproplay8729 thing is man, no one cared when I played. Like I said, they were valued equally. And pul was .33 hr, um was .66 hr. It was very direct currency. If you traded for hrs, you'd expect a mix of anything past um.
@@YourFinalMoments Ahh yeah I know what you mean. I guess when it comes the Ladder going on for awhile or just being on Non-Ladder, people tend to loosen up a lot more on trade value. I don't expect that will be the same come D2R or on a Ladder reset until a few months down the line.
