My personal headcanon is that the Princess' name isn't even Jasmine. Aladdin didn't care enough to learn it, and he just made up a name that sounded convincing enough to tell his side of the story.
And the second best thing about them is that they are still doing it today. Like, most theater companies would understandably stop working until the pandemic ends, but they just power through it and give us great content even in complete quarantine
The fact that goes far too unrecognized is that this whole cast is literally 10 people. The show feels massive.... and there are less than a dozen people up there.
Aladdin’s “oh right, I’m a thief, I TAKE what I want” at the end when he’s going crazy genuinely terrified me lol, like he’s no longer a silly antagonist but an all too real threat to the princess
That whole scene is probably my favorite of all Jeff's performances (and that's saying a lot). We all know he is good at playing crazy and chaotic characters, but that takes it to a whole new level.
You know something's wrong when a parody musical group does the "What if the villain was actually good" story better than a multi billion dollar company....
Disney doesn't *actually care* about improving the originals, or writting redemption arcs. They just want easy cash flow, and whatever short sighted trends they want to latch onto at the time.
The funniest thing is that before that he mentiond only Allah And now he mentions Jesus Christ Like Aladdin was so creepy that he changed religion on sight
I like painting this out. At the beginning of the musical, Shirazard told Jafar that she knew one thousand tales. The original Shirazard knew one thousand and one. She’s telling the story. This is the one thousandth and first tale

@@sivvinod3187 Exactly my thoughts. No single person on this planet asked, needed or desired a Cruella origin flick. Fortunately, it seems Disney's decided to crank out a single decent live action reboot before their inevitable near future descent back into creative irrelevancy.
I see Disney's rampage of badly rewriting their own movies has chased people into the arms of an actually good musical about a villain. Starkid deserves all the recognition
@@driftteamleader3470 with their large influence in almost every piece of media i imagine the big guys aren’t too worried about branching off to niche audiences. Just as long as they have their ip’s.
jeff blim doing the "you're the guy who killed my parents" bit is genuinely really creepy and terrifying and the "okay jesus christ i dont know whats going on here" from jafar is so well timed and hilarious like this musical is a masterclass in balancing tone
Ever since Cruella came out, people kept making jokes about Disney making a Jafar movie and I just wanted to shake them and say they couldn't live up to the original
another 10/10 part is when the princess goes to the camera “oh no you guys! you don’t think jafar was right about aladdin?” and the whole audience goes “YES!” and then you hear darren criss say “nah” and she says “ME NEITHER!!” gold
@@smutnejajo5149 It does. Every story has multiple viewpoints. usually we narrow them down to the hero and villain's point of views. Jafar saying "Let them bury the side of the story they'll never learn" implies we (the audience) will not see his viewpoint. We will never learn that the villain of the story is actually trying to do the right thing.
The best part is the fact that they show minor justifications for everyone in the titular number, even if they did get kinda… _Twisted…_ but they still say that nothing Cruella does is justified.
Another cool thing that didnt get mentioned is the contrast between Achmed and Jafar in their songs. Both of them have made accomplishments that arent recognized by their people. However Achmed is concerned with how people remember him and is willing to do bad things to make sure he is remembered well, while Jafar accepts that he will be remembered badly and chooses to do the right thing.
jafar and achmed are foils of each other, but also aladdin and the princess. the princess sees that life is unfair, and while she was indeed selfish at the beginning, she learns to care about people other than herself and improve everyone's lives. meanwhile aladdin literally killed his parents and decides to just steal what he wants because he saw the threat of getting kicked out of the house because he doesn't have a job at 33 as unfair. aladdin is the worst parts of jasmine exaggerated tenfold, and the contrast between the two at the end shows just how much jasmine's grown as a character.
Also, people appreciate Achmed and tell him how great he is all the time. The only exception is the woman he loves. Completely opposite to how Jafar is treated.
In the ending when Jafar asks Scheherezade how their story ends and she replies "It doesn't" I CRY EVERYTIME, I CANNOT WATCH THIS MASTERPIECE WITHOUT CRYING IT'S TOO GOOD
That gets me, but I’m already drowning in my tears after this: 🎶 “I wish you didn’t have to go when our story’s just begun...”🎶 “I’m sorry, there are a couple of provisos, a few quid pro quos... This is a wish I cannot grant.” 🎶 ”Then I wish you every happiness...” 🎶 🎶 “It is done.” 🎶
I feel like the parody of Disney's corporate sellout phase has been made even better with time, given the current trend for doing villain origin stories and saying "but actually this villain was good!!!". Now Twisted is not just a parody of a Disney musical or the company itself, but the whole weird prequel trend. Incredible staying power
And honestly, unlike Cruella, Ja'far was a good guy in1001 night. The show references his actual role as man of science, not an evil wizard of Aladdin.
Twisted is at least 7-8 years old and Disney created at least 5 remakes during that, all which aged like milk. Twisted is like a high-quality wine, aged beautifully well every year
Even Jafar said "WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?!" In the musical when Cruella chimes in trying to be sympathetic while saying she _just_ wanted to skin puppies
I love that Jafar’s dream in Happy Ending is to share an “itty bitty living space” with his wife, and that’s exactly what he gets with the “shitty shitty living space” callback at the end.
I think they call the genie "the jinn" because that's what he's called in the original 1001 arabian nights, which twisted references a lot more and a lot more accurately than Aladdin!
@@jordandavenport5784 Other than that bit where Ja'far is like "Okay jeesus christ what is going on" And him NOT referencing Allah helps with the punchline.
Also, how have I not seen any comments about how baffling it is that a nut fingering joke that just felt like shock humor ( 23:34 ) actually worked as a form of foreshadowing/whatever for a legit twist?? HOW TF??
@@georgeuferov1497 yeah they did. What with making her seem like some sort of an underdog when she's been clearly portrayed as an umempathetic, a puppy skinning, capitalistic woman. Looking back, the plot twist that Jafar was Jasmine’s father really improves their interactions beforehand with foresight. Especially when he tried to give her ‘the talk’ about boys, or how he visibly goes into ‘dad-mode’ when Aladdin talks about his…intentions.

So glad Starkid and especially Twisted are getting the attention they deserve. I was lucky enough to get to see Twisted live back in 2013 and it was INCREDIBLE. Also the Starkids are so sweet in real life. After every show, they would come out and spend hours meeting fans.
Yup, I remember going to the SPACE tour in 2011(?) And not just getting all their autographs, but also hanging out with them as they packed up after the show.
I got to see it live, too! It’s the only show of theirs I’ve managed to catch live (other than their second tour), mostly because I’m not too far from Chicago. Just... unforgettable. I’d been a Starkid fan since AVPM and dragged my boyfriend to see it. He really wasn’t into musicals at the time, but that changed with Twisted. We were both laughing until our stomachs hurt through the whole thing. Several months later, we scored tickets to see Book of Mormon, which he was super excited about because he’s a huge fan of Trey Parker/Matt Stone. The FIRST thing he said when it was over was, “Man, that Aladdin parody was way funnier, and a lot better.” (I personally adore Book of Mormon, so this is not in any way a diss from me)
@@Kristyle187 Yeah, being a Starkid fan living in Chicago at the time was such a privilege lol. It's the only show I ever cried tears of laughter and actual tears to. Watching this again, after also watching Big Joel's review of the live action Aladdin... I just realized... _Twisted_ actually _does_ fix a dumb plot hole, possibly by accident, in a really clever and subtle way that the official version couldn't _dream_ of achieving. See, Jafar - in all versions - wishes to be the Sultan, and despite whatever "magic" was used, everyone just kind of... doesn't care after he gets lamp'd, and the old Sultan just goes back to ruling and Jasmine is still the princess because... reasons, I guess. But in _Twisted,_ this weird idiosyncrasy and seeming failure of the magic is actually resolved - Ja'far wishes to become the Sultan, and when he "dies", the Princess takes over as rightful ruler... but per the twist, she was never _actually_ a princess before Jafar made the wish, but once he does, she becomes the rightful heir by blood-right and takes the throne when he's gone. To the townspeople it's functionally the same as what they expected, so they don't need to question it, but as the audience it adds a whole other powerful, yet very subtle layer to the story. God _damn,_ the writing in this silly play is so good!
There's more than one plot hole this version fills. The sultan being depicted as one of the good guys when the main character is literally so down on his luck because of Agrabah's shit economy that he's stealing for the sake of survival. Granted, THIS Aladdin is stealing because he's too lazy to work, but in the original, where the sultan is 'good', Agrabah is clearly a horrible place to live. Shopkeepers have the right to permanently maim people without trial, the number of child beggars is definitely abnormal, and to top it off, kids can be run over or whipped on the street and people just watch. The sultan is clearly an incompetent ruler, and with Aladdin having absolutely no training, he will be just as incompetent if not worse when he takes his place, because in an extremely male-dominated society, Jasmine won't be able to take the throne herself (as much as the live action version made it out like she could). Agrabah is screwed if we go by the Disney films.
"The question then is whether 'tis nobler in the mind / To be well liked but ineffectual, or moral but maligned" is genuinely one of my favourite lines i've ever heard in musical theatre, because it just sounds really good (musically and with the rhyme and everything) but also because it's just lyrically beautiful. I mean, this is from the same musical with the lines, "He did not fuck a fish!" "He WANTED to fuck a fish!"

I really wish that they worked with the Kaley McMahon on their other shows. Especially for Hatchetfield. Jeff is great at music but he doesn't seem to really know how to write lyrics for musical theater. EDIT: "I really wish" sounds like I'm judging them for not continuing to work with her but that's not the case. I'm sure there are totally legit reasons they don't. (For example -- not being based in Chicago anymore.) I mean "I really wish" in the sense of "it'd be so cool if this had happened" and not "I'm disappointed in them for not working with her" lol.
That scene seems so weird and out of the blue imo. I think that's the point, but it's just so weird how it stops the climax for this batshit monologue Aladdin has with himself. When he finishes and Jafar's like "Okay what the fuck" I'm always like "YEAH WHAT THE FUCK INDEED"
@@meanyapickles That's how I felt too initially, but then you rewatch the musical (for the millionth time) and notice the signs were always there. @@ItsAkiiss I'm Iraqi too! I do know some people called Jafar but they're very little, it might be different in my case because I don't actually live in Iraq.
Something occurs to me now that didn't when I watched it a few years ago: The people complain about Jafar not fixing literally everything in their lives while being unwilling to actually do anything to fix their own lives out of a misplaced belief that things should just work out well for them. They also place the blame solely on Jafar despite the fact that he's only a lone member of the palace, a single bureaucrat working within a much larger governing body... And even if he knew exactly how to fix society, as an advisor he wouldn't actually have the power to make the necessary changes on his own... It may have just been an undertone at the time, but post-2016 and now post-2020, it's hard not to see a level of allegory baked into Twisted about the kind of political apathy that was quite common back when it was written...
What do you mean you can't remember songs who could forget. "Hermione can't draw Hermione can't draw Hermione cannot draw She only reads books a cannot draw even if she's reading a how to draw book."

one of my favorite details from the show is that towards the beginning, Jafar says something along the lines of “sorcery is for fools and dreamers” and by the end of the show, he’s pretending to be a sorcerer to save everyone he cares about :,)
Not only that, but it's dreams that he recognizes as the true power by the end. He can't save the day because he lost his ability to truly believe in his dreams, so he has to pass the torch to the next generation, who hasn't had their optimism beaten out of them yet.
The "Science says you're dead and gone forever" line always gets me. It's brilliant, it's emotional, and it's such a beautiful, captivating line. Also I agree that the Follow The Gold songs are amazing. TWISTED IS AMAZING PLEASE WATCH IT
If anyone wants more Dylan Saunders, he starred in a musical called Starry about the life of Vincent Van Gogh (with him playing the starring role, no pun intended). It is strikingly beautiful and amazing! Edit: It also has Jeff Blim in it
SO MUCH THIS. It's absolutely fantastic. The only downfall is that everything Starkid has done since Twisted has been "pretty good, but not as good as Twisted." I worry they won't reach such a pinnacle again. Also, since Cruella is a thing now, I'm still going to defer to the Twisted take on her. While all the other villains try to justify their villainy (Ursula is granting wishes, Gaston is protecting a Stockholm Syndrome victim, etc.), Cruella comes out shouting "I only wished to have a coast made out of PUPPIES!" and everyone turns on her immediately going "What the hell is wrong with you!? Just leave!" Even Twisted knew that Cruella was irredeemable. Should have told the Magic Kingdom, I guess.
Personally I saw Cruella 2021 as more of a prequel than a remake if I am being honest. Telling the story of how Cruella is getting up to the point of her villainy which sounds like it's gonna be a two parter. The ending obviously didn't leave it off on the right note, especially if they stop the Cruella story there, then it doesn't sound reasonable. I feel like _Cruella_ is trying to tell why Cruella wants to have a coat of puppies... even though the ending which I was mind shocked about but then quick seconds of realization made me remember how much it screws the Disney canon. She does mention making a coat of puppies in the remake, so, the idea is still there. Cruella is definitely gonna need a reasonable sequel for the confusing ending. I think Cruella 2021 is fun to watch... but Ima stick with Twisted Cruella.
@@raymaikeru I thought it was more of a less-obvious reimagining, sorta like Maleficent. She just seemed far from evil enough to kill puppies. I loved the movie though.
@@infjelphabasupporter8416 Yeah I also saw it as a reimagining too. There's no way 2021 Cruella becomes the classic Cruella since her evilness is toned down a lot. If you look at it like that instead of through nostalgia glasses the movie is amazing. She doesn't make a coat out of puppies but she's fine with people thinking she did. Also im pretty sure the movie is based off a book anyway?
have you noticed that "stealing is so much easier when you've already got tons of gold" in Happy Ending borrows some of its music from "Follow the gold and rule"? I fucking love this play
I think Shakespeare would love this. He loved wacky, hysterical, moving stories. I mean look at Twelfth Night- or literally any one of his plays. Twisted is Shakespeare.
there's something magical about the way the guy barely contains his laughter and the way he delivers the line "And who's this very funny blue man next to you?"
Ngl I thought the lyric that got you was gonna be “I wish you didn’t have to go when our story’s just begun” “that is the one wish I cannot grant” “then I wish you every happiness”
I think the diamond in the rough lyric would start to choke him up and then that second part would seal the deal because that's definitely how it happened for me.
And When the World's At Stake is such a powerful song about motherhood, from the musical Trail to Oregon. The musical is very wonky and silly, but dang, that song hits hard. (I like that the husband brings back the song in the second half as he realizes his responsibility of keeping his family together.) The best part that the mother sings is: _I could have walked out, left her for dead._ _Cut her out with my own hand._ _But something inside me was kicking and screaming to live._ Such powerful lyrics. The mother chose life for her child, and sacrificed so much to give her daughter a future full of of possibilities. The mother in Trail to Oregon is the absolute MVP of the entire musical!
@@Galvatronover lol what? Was Phineas and Ferb even mentioned in this video? They're talking about the song from Starship, the Starkid musical that's basically The Little Mermaid but with a science fiction twist. Kick It Up A Notch is the equivalent of Poor Unfortunate Souls, when the villain convinces the main character to give up their life for the chance to be human.
Imagine saying that you want to name your daughter jasmine and the next day you get a knock on the door from Mickey Mouse saying how much you will need to pay in royalties
as soon as i saw this video i KNEW you would hit us with the: “I wish you ever happiness.” AND I DO NOT APPRECIATE IT. THOSE TWO LINES BETWEEN THE PRINCESS AND JAFAR FUCKING END MY WHOLE CAREER.
Besides Twisted I actually cried a lot in Spies are Forever even though it’s not technically Starkid but includes a majority of the cast members. Then again I do cry a little at all of the shows bc I cry at everything
It just reeks of so much foreshadowing that does not just make you go "oh my god how did I miss that" but also make you go, "i want to erase my memories about this show so i can finally stop sobbing and experience it again but i want to remember this musical forever in my mind".
You go from crying over Owen's death and Curt's grief to being in stunned silence and unsure of whether it's okay to laugh during Not So Bad in like the snap of a finger. It's incredibly impressive, honestly.
"I wish you every happiness" "It is done." got me SO hard. jasmine saying well i cant wish what i want to for you. all i can do is wish you every happiness. and jafar looking at her like :^) knowing you brings me every happiness. It is already done. And ofc it being the classic genie line was such good writing.
I didn't even notice that Scheherazade's outfit resembles the outfit Jasmine had on when Jafar had the lamp. I don't know if that was intentional or not, but if it was, amazing!!!
Oh wow, that's a great detail - and fits the original. Jafar didn't actually care about Jasmine in the Disney version, he just wanted power - so why would that ruse have worked? Because he saw her as Scheherazade, not Jasmine.
The duality of comedy and heart-wrenching emotional bits are prevalent throughout the entire show, even in the throwaway jokes. My favourite example is Abdul’s death, you can literally hear the audience laugh, and then ‘aww’, laugh again and ‘aww’ where he finally passes.
"Twisted" took a villain that genuinely terrified me as a child (I was five when the original "Aladdin" came out) and made me love him. I prefer the musical's story to Disney's take and have never been able to look at "Aladdin" the same way since.
If you haven't watched it, I can't recommend "Spies are Forever" enough. It's by the Tin Can Brothers, a sister company to Starkid, and the entire musical is so incredibly well done, from the songs to the story. It's a spoof of mostly James Bond movies, but also the "spy" genre itself. Everything about it is *so* good!
Yeah Spies are Forever is fantastic, more people need to know about it. Really one of the strongest parodies in the Starkid/Starkid-adjacent catalogue.
I know twisted is probably the best starkid musical, but The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals, while not being as emotional, is SO funny, not to mention the pure genius songs (coughshowstoppingnumbercough). TGWDLM comes at a REALLY close second for me.
a lot of things in twisted just did not hit it for me, I prefere the not as polished but homie very potter 1 and 2 out of nostalgia, starship for the lovestory, utalising Laura lopez well and well, one goes never wrong with joe walker and joey richter. Dylan slays both as the sweet dumbass and villain and brian holden does, what he does best, not getting taken seriously . . . tgwdlm slays with mariah rose faith and robert and social critique and not starkid but come one, spies are forever, mk is a queen . . . I compleatly aknowlage that twistd s well ritten as hell, but a good portion is not up to my taste.
I really like horror, and the end of TGWDLM is genuinely amazing horror. Especially the credits when Emma is desperately screaming, begging for help, while the rest of the cast takes their bows and the audience applauds uproariously. That is true horror. TGWDLM might not be as conventionally scary as a slasher film or whatever, but it instills much more fear (and is more fun).
Honestly I thought that show’s music was pretty forgettable. Since it didn’t really tie into emotion or character arcs, given that they were all sung by aliens in those characters bodies and not the characters themselves, save for Show Stopping Number and Let It Out
I just watched this today and I am *still* dealing with the tonal whiplash of the Sultan taking Jafar’s wife. It was simultaneously one of funniest parts for me and the one that hit me hardest. That hit way too close to home for me to laugh as hard as I did. Also, “Tiger Fucker” is sounds oddly metal when you don’t have the context.
27:15 I’d like to point out that something similar was also done in A Very Potter Senior Year, with Gilderoy Lockhart rewriting the entirety of Harry’s time at Hogwarts to sell as a book series to muggles, and I accept both that and the ending of Twisted as canon in both universes
I guess it's more notorious here because Twisted completely turns the original story on its head, whereas the AVPM trilogy mainly streamlines it instead, largely keeping the heart of the books intact.
Alright yes that music shift between Jafar to Aladdin is really cool but can we talk about how they reprised that heavy electric guitar tune when Jafar goes into "Twisted" because he's finally seen as the actual villain of the story (at least, to all the other characters) because that was SICK as FUCK
On the starkid reddit: when the Cruella trailer dropped and the response was bad, a ton of memes about it showed up ("Why would you do that?! That's insane! Leave! You're not helping!"
One of my favorite things about Starkid is how a lot of jokes are customized to each time they preform. I think the best example of this is "Trail to Oregon" where pretty much EVERY SHOW is unique in the names of the family members, some of the jokes (like when the shop keep and the dad meet and the dad is robbing him because he scammed them, the thing he says right after failing to sing a reprise of "when the world's at stake" is different each musical). And in Twisted, most of these moments are brought on by the Jinn.
My personal headcanon is that the Princess' name isn't even Jasmine. Aladdin didn't care enough to learn it, and he just made up a name that sounded convincing enough to tell his side of the story.
He panics when someone asks for her name. He looks around for something and the first thing he sees is a stall selling jasmine rice grains.
It fits, he misremembered that other girls name in I Steal Anything

Another cool thing that didnt get mentioned is the contrast between Achmed and Jafar in their songs. Both of them have made accomplishments that arent recognized by their people. However Achmed is concerned with how people remember him and is willing to do bad things to make sure he is remembered well, while Jafar accepts that he will be remembered badly and chooses to do the right thing.
THIS IS GOOD
I dont know, i felt the contrast being that Achmed is loved by his people while being a warlord, while Jafar was hated while trying to achieve peace
jafar and achmed are foils of each other, but also aladdin and the princess. the princess sees that life is unfair, and while she was indeed selfish at the beginning, she learns to care about people other than herself and improve everyone's lives. meanwhile aladdin literally killed his parents and decides to just steal what he wants because he saw the threat of getting kicked out of the house because he doesn't have a job at 33 as unfair. aladdin is the worst parts of jasmine exaggerated tenfold, and the contrast between the two at the end shows just how much jasmine's grown as a character.
True
Also, people appreciate Achmed and tell him how great he is all the time. The only exception is the woman he loves. Completely opposite to how Jafar is treated.
In the ending when Jafar asks Scheherezade how their story ends and she replies "It doesn't" I CRY EVERYTIME, I CANNOT WATCH THIS MASTERPIECE WITHOUT CRYING IT'S TOO GOOD

And honestly, unlike Cruella, Ja'far was a good guy in1001 night. The show references his actual role as man of science, not an evil wizard of Aladdin.

It's also a fun parallel to the original, where Aladdin's wish to be "made a prince" is only actually granted when he marries Jasmine!

Not only that, but it's dreams that he recognizes as the true power by the end. He can't save the day because he lost his ability to truly believe in his dreams, so he has to pass the torch to the next generation, who hasn't had their optimism beaten out of them yet.
stop omg i’m going to cry
FINALLY, HE MADE THE STARKID VIDEO
Now I wait for him to cover The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals
Now I wait for him to cover The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals
The "Science says you're dead and gone forever" line always gets me. It's brilliant, it's emotional, and it's such a beautiful, captivating line.
Also I agree that the Follow The Gold songs are amazing. TWISTED IS AMAZING PLEASE WATCH IT
If anyone wants more Dylan Saunders, he starred in a musical called Starry about the life of Vincent Van Gogh (with him playing the starring role, no pun intended). It is strikingly beautiful and amazing!
Edit: It also has Jeff Blim in it
WOW YASSS that's amazing! I need to find clips now!
One of my fav musicals!!!!!
I heard Lauren is in it too? I didn't even know what it's about til now
jaime lyn beatty and mariah rose faith are in it too :)
I got to see a staged reading in NYC with him, Jaime and Mariah and they were all so amazing!!
TFW your musical becomes so popular that Evanna Lynch actually joins your cast to play Luna Lovegood in A Very Potter Senior Year.
Nooooooo seriously???
Yup! The whole performance was recorded, you can look it up, she’s in the very first scene so you will not have a hard time finding her ahah
Just leave!"
Even Twisted knew that Cruella was irredeemable.
@@moonstoneblues8512 In the book, she doesn't make a coat out of puppies either... she just really wanted to.

Wow.
Man, that’s some Sideways-level observation
Oh dang, you know the pacing is good when "25 minute flashback sequence" genuinely surprised me, it felt like 10 at most.
How dare you for not appreciating the best Starkid song ever: "The Beginning of Moana" from TGWDLM.

17:30 AND It takes Jafar's line from the original. "Haven't you heard of the golden rule? Whoever has the gold makes the rules!"
I think Shakespeare would love this. He loved wacky, hysterical, moving stories. I mean look at Twelfth Night- or literally any one of his plays. Twisted is Shakespeare.
Absolutely agree.
I was thinking this the whole time. The scene writing and shifts of tone for dramedy feels very Shakespeare.
there's something magical about the way the guy barely contains his laughter and the way he delivers the line "And who's this very funny blue man next to you?"
Funny Blue Man
Ngl I thought the lyric that got you was gonna be “I wish you didn’t have to go when our story’s just begun” “that is the one wish I cannot grant” “then I wish you every happiness”

Kick It Up a Notch is legitimately a fucking fantastic song and I am glad it was recognized even briefly
The Phineas and ferb song ?
@@Galvatronover Starkid made a song with the same name
Dude, Kick It Up a Notch is STILL one of personal get-hyped songs
And When the World's At Stake is such a powerful song about motherhood, from the musical Trail to Oregon. The musical is very wonky and silly, but dang, that song hits hard. (I like that the husband brings back the song in the second half as he realizes his responsibility of keeping his family together.)
The best part that the mother sings is:
_I could have walked out, left her for dead._
_Cut her out with my own hand._
_But something inside me was kicking and screaming to live._
Such powerful lyrics.
*knock knock* "Ha ha! Open up pal! You better grab your credit card because you owe me everything you own!"
"Jasmine" is fine. "Princess Jasmine" will get you in trouble.
as soon as i saw this video i KNEW you would hit us with the:
“I wish you ever happiness.”
AND I DO NOT APPRECIATE IT. THOSE TWO LINES BETWEEN THE PRINCESS AND JAFAR FUCKING END MY WHOLE CAREER.
As soon as you know who showed up after that wish I knew exactly what that last wish meant and the tears flowed like a river
Besides Twisted I actually cried a lot in Spies are Forever even though it’s not technically Starkid but includes a majority of the cast members. Then again I do cry a little at all of the shows bc I cry at everything
I would love to hear his take on Spies are Forever! Such a fun but also emotional show
It just reeks of so much foreshadowing that does not just make you go "oh my god how did I miss that" but also make you go, "i want to erase my memories about this show so i can finally stop sobbing and experience it again but i want to remember this musical forever in my mind".
oh god i reaaaaally love spies are foreves, i cried so much
You go from crying over Owen's death and Curt's grief to being in stunned silence and unsure of whether it's okay to laugh during Not So Bad in like the snap of a finger. It's incredibly impressive, honestly.
@@Chromaggia Not So Bad is one of the catchiest songs, but definitely not one to burst out into a rendition of around friends and family
"I wish you every happiness"
"It is done."
got me SO hard. jasmine saying well i cant wish what i want to for you. all i can do is wish you every happiness.
and jafar looking at her like :^) knowing you brings me every happiness. It is already done. And ofc it being the classic genie line was such good writing.
I didn't even notice that Scheherazade's outfit resembles the outfit Jasmine had on when Jafar had the lamp. I don't know if that was intentional or not, but if it was, amazing!!!
I didn’t noticed that until now. That’s really cool
Oh my God
This is so cool
I didn't think about the IMPLICATIONS
Oh wow, that's a great detail - and fits the original. Jafar didn't actually care about Jasmine in the Disney version, he just wanted power - so why would that ruse have worked? Because he saw her as Scheherazade, not Jasmine.
June Saito is so talented i-
I remember watching this years ago. Thanks for making a video about it
Why do you like so much of the same stuff like me?
Didn’t expect the shuck to be here
What are you doing here don't you have NASA things to do
Blessed JoJo and Starkid fans
I do like how they made fun of the fact that attacking another prince would be an act of war
They turned some random throwaway character into a delight whenever he’s on screen
The duality of comedy and heart-wrenching emotional bits are prevalent throughout the entire show, even in the throwaway jokes. My favourite example is Abdul’s death, you can literally hear the audience laugh, and then ‘aww’, laugh again and ‘aww’ where he finally passes.
It’s at 8:40 in the Starkid full musical video
This is just a Starkid thing in general I notice it so much with Draco in A Very Potter Sequel
"Twisted" took a villain that genuinely terrified me as a child (I was five when the original "Aladdin" came out) and made me love him. I prefer the musical's story to Disney's take and have never been able to look at "Aladdin" the same way since.
Same! I just cannot see it in the same way.
I literally said just the other day “schaff should do a video on Starkid” and here we are. My life is complete.
Same
If you haven't watched it, I can't recommend "Spies are Forever" enough. It's by the Tin Can Brothers, a sister company to Starkid, and the entire musical is so incredibly well done, from the songs to the story. It's a spoof of mostly James Bond movies, but also the "spy" genre itself. Everything about it is *so* good!
Spies are forever! It's a musical! It's about spies!
Yes!!!!! It’s such a great musical
Yeah Spies are Forever is fantastic, more people need to know about it. Really one of the strongest parodies in the Starkid/Starkid-adjacent catalogue.
The lovers to enemies makes me cry
I know twisted is probably the best starkid musical, but The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals, while not being as emotional, is SO funny, not to mention the pure genius songs (coughshowstoppingnumbercough). TGWDLM comes at a REALLY close second for me.
Yes yes yes!!! You are right and you should say it !
TGWDLM is above Twisted for me. I don't have a good reason for this, I just liked it more. But Twisted was still really fantastic.
a lot of things in twisted just did not hit it for me, I prefere the not as polished but homie very potter 1 and 2 out of nostalgia, starship for the lovestory, utalising Laura lopez well and well, one goes never wrong with joe walker and joey richter. Dylan slays both as the sweet dumbass and villain and brian holden does, what he does best, not getting taken seriously . . .
tgwdlm slays with mariah rose faith and robert and social critique
and not starkid but come one, spies are forever, mk is a queen . . .
I compleatly aknowlage that twistd s well ritten as hell, but a good portion is not up to my taste.
My top 5 starkid ranking is 1) Twisted 2) TGWDLM 3) AVPS 4) AVPM 5) Holy Musical B@tman
*"Starkid songs aren't memorable"*
Businees working boys and the entirety of TGWDLM: *✨i'm a hallucination.✨*
Guess he's just the guy who didn't like musicals
No one remembers ahmed and twisted are great
i regularly get tgwdlm songs stuck in my head. twisted too but idk tgwdlm songs just have this thing uknow
Honestly I thought that show’s music was pretty forgettable. Since it didn’t really tie into emotion or character arcs, given that they were all sung by aliens in those characters bodies and not the characters themselves, save for Show Stopping Number and Let It Out
I WAS LITERALLY SINGING THE CUP OF ROASTED COFFEE SONG RIGHT BEFORE I SAW THIS
YESSS STARKID! They’re so underrated!
AGREED!
Yes
I'm glad to see Starkid love!
Ahhhh I stan starkid
It just hit me that they could’ve called the princess Yasmin instead of Jasmine and it would be more accurate 💀
"The Princess" is funny, but yeah, that would be clever
I just watched this today and I am *still* dealing with the tonal whiplash of the Sultan taking Jafar’s wife. It was simultaneously one of funniest parts for me and the one that hit me hardest. That hit way too close to home for me to laugh as hard as I did.
Also, “Tiger Fucker” is sounds oddly metal when you don’t have the context.
So are you over it now?
@@BramLastname They will never be over it
@@NotSylvanUnfortunately I know that,
I just wanted to taunt them a bit.
Gilderoy Lockhart being a huge bigot isn't too surprising I guess
Alright yes that music shift between Jafar to Aladdin is really cool but can we talk about how they reprised that heavy electric guitar tune when Jafar goes into "Twisted" because he's finally seen as the actual villain of the story (at least, to all the other characters) because that was SICK as FUCK
Forget Disney’s crappy film “cruella”, you want a real story about the villain’s side of things watch “Twisted”.
Wait, Cruella was considered bad?
...do I have terrible tastes? Cuz I actually loved that movie.
@@lukadark9761 its not bad. Twisted is about 100 times better
@@lukadark9761 I haven’t seen it yet, I’ve seen some who love it and some who hate it
@@jensentaylor1384 just because somethings better doesn't make the other thing worse, I loved Cruella and adore Twisted
