  • Filmed September 29, 2012, 3.50pm. A iron smelting, and sand casting demonstration by the Sculptors Guild at the Dumbo Arts Festival, Brooklyn. Furnace master Kenneth Payne supervises operations, with Michael Dominick demonstrating one of his molten iron paintings. For about a hour the furnace produced only "cold metal" until the problem was fixed with an additional air blast pipe. Toward the end of the video an apprentice nearly causes an accident when he uses excessive force to jam a wet clay plug into the tap hole causing molten metal to splatter everywhere.

I'm sorry but this is not smelting. Smelting is the refining of the ore. This is just melting.

I have no metal working skills whatsoever. My experience in this area goes about as far as watching a beer can melt in a fire so all respect to these men and women where it is due. That being said I will never understand "art" where the artist just grabs whatever medium they are using and splashes it onto a surface.

Is recycling reclaimed iron the same as smelting? i.e. reducing iron ore to a bloom then to an ingot?

It was a rhetorical question, but the answer is NO it is not the same, it is far from smelting ...... digest that for a minute or two :)

Such a shame for people to have such negative and short sighted responses, . This is all hand made equipment used to demonstrate the foundry process. The time and materials were all donated by the people who built the equipment, spent days driving there and setting up in an effort to hopefully inspire people about the casting process and iron. All of this was possible by the hard work and generosity of the artists spent weeks building the molds, the equipment and collecting the iron. Anyone can learn to work industrial foundry equipment , but to build it from recycled materials with no budget requires true skill and grit. And secondly anyone willing to donate that kind of time and energy for educational experience and to inspire others by sharing their passion is truly deserving of admiration not criticism .

Anyone else think about the huge amounts of energy that goes into making absolute garbage passed off as 'art'? Or wonder where all that money comes from? Your wallet. That's where. You pay for this stupid shit. It's under the guise of 'education', 'public art', etc. but almost all 'artisan blacksmithing' is paid for by taxpayers and produces absolutely nothing of any value to anyone and costs us many hundreds of millions of dollars a year. Art, and sports (except in the US where sports has commercial sponsorship) only work in the iron lung of the tax payers misappropriated funds.
