Sir my 7mm Rem mag 770 new only shot 3 to 6 inch groups at 100 yards . got new scope hand loaded it now is 1 inch at 300 yards. Bullet depth 1000s off the lans . with patience it now has a 100% cold bore zero . also found with pencil profile hunting barrel it heats up and spreads out if shot one after another. Fire shot leave bolt open let cool 10 to 15 minutes between shots to get better groups. I now have cold bore zero and with the time between shots hole in hole accuracy at 100 yards. 139 grain sst max powder charge coal 1000 of lans. Works flawlessly for me .

@@quarterminutemagnums my pleasure sir at first I was in a hurry and after spending all that money on ammo then having to buy reloading dies press and powders bullets primers I found less is more when you get that cold bore zero it's so gratifying to know you pull it out and 100 yards it hit perfectly every time .. It took me a month of Saturday's to get there about an hr each visit cold bore shots adjust wait 10 15 min shoot after 3 shots put it up for next time after that spot on

You have staight forward approach, with alot of experience, that should help anyone tightened their groups.

I really enjoy your channel and knowledge. I have a 315 neck 7mag that is new bartlien , how much clearance do you find works best ?

      Neck clearance that is.

Dear Sir - You never know until you experiment - 0.001"- 0.003" under actual chamber neck diameter "usually" works. Thanks................

QMM, thanks. My assumption is that you are talking about working up a load for the specific rifle. I suppose you could break in the rifle carefully (shoot, clean, shoot, clean) with factory ammo, as you often do, and watch for the groups to tighten. Look for signs what the gun likes. This, for me, is the hard part. Then adjust seating depth in very small increments to find an accuracy node. This assumes you have already selected a powder, found a velocity node, then built some hand loads with adjusted jumps off the lands.

So prior to the hunt, I should make sure I don’t have a clean barrel? Maybe one or two rounds down the tube? Thanks

How do you get such tight groups with a 7mm rem mag? Are these custom barrels? What's the biggest factor, barrel or handloads? I have a 90's era browning a bolt that I struggle to get MOA out of using factory ammo. Its a hunting gun, but I want to be able to hunt long range and MOA is definitely minimum acceptable accuracy. Should I be able to get there or should I dump it and buy something different? I love the ballistics of the 7mm rem mag, but am looking at the newer PRC cartridges to get better accuracy out of factory ammo / factory rifles. What say you? Would love an accurate 7mm rem mag, but seem to be hard to find in factory rifles. Bought a cheap ruger american for my son in 6.5 creedmoor and it easily shoots MOA with factory ammo.

Dear Sir - these are "full blown custom rifles" built with best components available. Many of them will shoot under an inch at 400 yards. Thanks.............

@@quarterminutemagnums That's quite impressive. 2.5" at 1000? In a belted 7mm rem mag? Wow. What would such a rifle cost?

May instead of calling the procedure "breaking in" maybe calling it "seasoning the barrel" like we do with our other lifelong friend a new dutch oven....

  • @johnnash5118

“Breaking-In” equals rifling copper “fouling”? So cleaning between 5-shot sets means removing carbon, but not the copper?
