I was in Shababs in early April. You were lucky with your waiter, my waiter just took my order without recommendations. I also chose a lamb balti and had a garlic naan. I chose my table and went looking for an outdoor for a beer, but had a change of heart and bought a chilled bottle of water. Sat down, and discovered these unusual chrome containers. they contained water!! whoops! This was for me nostalgic experience, I hadn´t eaten in this area since 1996, and previously mid 80s. In the 80s balti houses were giving food away, it was that cheap!! I believe only 4 restaurants are left after the rest of them just went out business.
As a Mancunian who lived in Birmingham for 25 years, it has to be about the food, and I'd go with Birmingham. But in terms of atmosphere, I couldn't disagree more. Wilmslow Road is an unrelenting corridor, with no real community feeling. Witness I go to the south end to do any grocery shopping, as some of those supermarkets at the north end are a bit pricey. The concentration of food, inc fast food, places makes it feel a bit artificial, like a food theme park. And knowing what weekend nights are like with a million students doesn't help me think any better of it. Whereas Sparkhill is a real place. I was a bit surprised you walked, and OK that doesn't show the area off to its best. But you're right, no-one would do it when the bus is £2. And I'm not sure Shabab is the best, though we all have our favourites. Good you went, though. And by bus! 😱
Yep, I live about ten minutes walk from Shabab's and it would never occur to me to go there (generally I get a balti at Diwan's on the Alcester Road, or in the Old Moseley Arms, both of which have an excellent atmosphere). Not sure what gave you the impression that was the best place to go, and the price was absurd - a Lamb balti and garlic naan at Diwans is under fifteen quid, and the building is actually complete - also it is easier to get to from the centre on the 50 bus route which runs once every ten minutes or so from right outside the coach station. You would have been better off doing some research first, and might have had a very different experience.
Another entertaining video! When I read the first few words of the video title, I thought you were going to be doing a day trip to India or Pakistan!!! :-D Glad you avoided having to go through border checks and delayed flights (if not buses) ;) Keep up the good work.
Balti Triangle is buzzing during the evening. Not actually in the city itself though. Great to see you in the Midlands. You need to try Black Country orange chips next! 👍
Hello my friend, I'm not familiar with balti's either but this Lamb one looked absolutely lovely & guess it tasted it too, the naan bread looked beautiful too!!! The meal was quite pricey although it was authentic!! I did however prefer the curry from the curry mile in Manchester as i think it's not only the meal but the venue that creates a more enjoyable experience. Thank you for this great, well filmed video, take care my friend 💜💜X
Again a very interesting video! 👍 The place in Birmingham looked fancy too, but I found the Chicken Tikka Masala looking more appetizing! De gustibus non est disputandum. Anyhow, I'm already looking forward to watching your next video. 👍
you’re a brave man walking through some of those parts of Birmingham 😂 at least it was during the day. I used to travel on National Express a lot when I was on a tighter budget, good to see they’re still reasonably priced even if they do take a while longer than the train
Yes I was forced to catch a Coach to Telford from Birmingham bus station during a very annoying train strike in 2023! Agree often trains are too expensive! The meal was pricey but the Lamb and Naan combo looked magnificent with a Mango Lasse...my choice exactly looked 9/10. Not far from me near Parramatta is "Harris Park" and that's exactly like your curry Mile! Nice video and a worthwhile day out- pity about 4 hours on a coach getting home- last year my Telford coach was 1 hour late also😢
Hi From sunny Catalina Island, California 🙋♀️. Last day of my weekend break. Back to LA this afternoon. You need to come here, whenever you make it to Calif! Another gorgeous meal! Especially that naan. In all my time in the UK, I never took a coach trip. Oddly though, I have taken the old Royal Mail Postbus when I visted the Scottish Highlands.
That was a coach not a bus my friend , trust me I used to drive them 🤣 Love Birmingham , they do some of the UK's best curries....sadly that wasn't one of them 🙁 Great content as usual 👍
I was a regular visitor from the mid eighties when curry cafe's as we called them started popping up, I'm of the old school opinion, that to be a place to eat, they won't have an alcohol licence, you have to ask for cutlery, and they serve Rasmalai and have a sweet counter, Though I havn't been to the Balti triangle for about 15 years
It was built quite recently, about 10-15 years ago. It replaced the old Digbeth coach station on the same place which was a really vile place. It was a former bus garage with the coaches coming inside the building so it was full of exhaust fumes. Sometimes there wasn’t room for all of the coaches to park alongside the passenger area so you might have to walk across from a sort of servicing area on the other side, crossing the path of other coaches driving in over the ground covered in a thick layer of mud and oil. There was a sort of café called Diggers, but I never used it, and don’t think I ever saw it open. The decor on the front of it was some sort of red and white striped plastic which looked like it would have been at home in a 1960s bingo hall conversion of a cinema.
Great video as always... Personally I think that yes £25 is alot but then again that seems to be about right now, based on what other restaurants charge. To expect to pay £80 by train though, thats ridiculous...unlike in many other countries, where train journeys often have a fixed price, the fares paid by British passengers fluctuate according to which operator passengers use, as well as the date tickets are purchased, the time of travel, and the changing demand for that particular service. Fares are set automatically according to computerised calculations, as UK train companies try to increase revenues by filling seats on emptier trains by offering much cheaper tickets well in advance. Apparently if you book a month in advance, its alot cheaper...Trains, most smaller stations, and routes are split into franchises run by different companies. Around a dozen of the franchise holders are linked to governments in other countries... France, Germany and Netherlands are the three main ones... Labour has pledged to fully renationalise Britain’s railways within five years, to potentially deliver better value for money and drive up standards.
Mate. Once, many years ago, I went on my first-ever foreign holiday with my mum and dad. We got the coach from Edinburgh to Spain. DO NOT GET THE BUS TO THE CONTINENT. It is hell.
Personally I love lamb on the bone cooked well, so I would choose the Balti and Naan. But agree, Birmingham looked a bit dull. As for travelling by coach abroad, it depends how many hours you can suffer in a stifling hot packed coach? I'm still hoping you'll go to Aberystwyth whilst it's sunny, for Welsh cakes and lava bread. Or how about coming to London for Pie & Mash with parsley liquor at Manzies? You won't regret it! 😊👍
im from Birmingham and i can tell you most of the places have gone from 20 years ago.most are pirri pirri chicken places now,its not as good as it was.hope you enjoyed it
The original Balti curry houses of the Balti Triangle have closed down with only a couple left. It doesn't really exist anymore. When I've eaten in the area I've gone for the authentic "desi" restaurants rather than the British Indian, they're much better overall and way cheaper.
HI travel is a preferred choice sum on train on bus if you have to travel a large distance plane is the option it's how you feel on the different modes of transport that make you comfortable. yes you will have delays that's part of the journey looks nice food. Good video. my mouth is watering.
I used to live in the balti triangle. Why did you walk there from digbeth station lol? It's not the best looking area but the meal you ate looked delicious, although very pricey. Good on you for making the journey! I need to visit Leeds
It's no longer the balti triangle it's got one restaurant the Shabab that every TH-camr visits yes it was once a great place to visit plenty of restaurants and pubs on every corner.i know I lived there.
Continent by Coach is a nice idea, however it's a long (often Overnight) slog to even get to Paris. If you look at flight prices from London Airports, you might be pleasantly surprised. Coach to London (possible stopover: e.g. Croydon); onwards by Air!
*Croydon for 24-hr train service to Gatwick/Luton; and/or 'Superloop' to Heathrow. Plus, much cheaper than Central London. There's a handy hotel hub next to the side-entrance of East Croydon station.
You bypassed Bradford to go to Birmingham for a curry? Bradford is the best in the country - by a long shot. I've eaten in Birmingham, Brick Lane & Manchester s curry mile - even my favourite Pakistani restaurant is Far Pavilions in Swinton. Bangladeshi food is my ultimate favourite. I went to an Asian wedding in Bradford - never have I experienced food like it. Seeing lamb served on the Bone - makes me very jealous. Worth every penny! Another great vlog. Really enjoyed - just makes me hungry.
Thank you for doing that vid, you've given me Food for thought about Birmingham going in November... it costed x amount (no spoilers) for you to go there vs £80 odd quid that you said. I don't know if it's cool without permission to name other youtubers but you might like a Scottish guy that does a lot travel vids by train and coaches. I give you a glue think of a John Candy film that's quite famous not Uncle Buck or Cool Runnings....
I’ve been to Shababs many times. It’s OK (I wouldn’t say quite the best) but balti lamb is £12, naan is £5 and mango lassi is £6, so it’s not too bad a price.
I would like to try the curries of Great Britain some day. We just dont have it here in the US. The only curry you get here is the store-bought Knorr brand curry cubes for sauce. 😅
Bradford is the best place to get curries apparently. I'd like to see you go there. V little time and money needed from Leeds. Good video though and glad you highlighted the cost of train travel.
Coach is much cheaper. Have you tried split ticketing for train journeys that can be cheaper. I thought the meal was expensive. Have you thought of a curry from Brick Lane or pie and mash both from London. Great video as usual 👍

We can get the same meal here in Cambodia (has a large Indian community) for about £8. I think 'British' curries are overrated. The people don't really understand the food.
Take whatever mode of transport that suits you. There's no reason to pay high prices for your short trips. I liked seeing the bus station which I thought was impressive for a city the size of Leeds. I was less impressed by your coach seating though.
That does seem very expensive im not far from Birmingham im sure there are beter value places you could of gone to around there maybe someone could recommend some as been thinking of visiting if thats the average i will stick to the ones in Kidderminster that are much cheaper & very good
Curry Mile or Balti Triangle?
Comment Below 😀
Curry mile
Balti mile for me.
Balti triangle as its where the Balti originates from
Balti triangle 100%
Is it like the Devil's Triangle of curry and middle-eastern foods? Not a bad place to get lost for a day. Sounds good right now.
Loved it here. Great video!

It was so good!
Its not a balti triangle anymore, its steaks n desserts now
Dead true, its no longer a patch on what it was in the eighties or even nineties. Steaks, desserts and burger type places now.

the best lamb on the bone curry you will ever taste is the sweet centre in Bradford established in the 60s and the food is amazing
You need to try a a Desi Mixed Grill in West Bromwich, Walsall or Wolverhampton.
