  • This is a recording of the webinar "Concentration or Deconcentration - What Works Best for Freedivers" with Molchanovs Instructor Trainer and multiple freediving National Record holder Andriy Khvetkevych. This is a recording of the webinar that was live on 19.04.2020 via freedivefest.com.
    ---
We are encouraged to stay at home. That doesn’t mean we can’t continue our freediving practice. Freediving is not merely happening in the water. There is so much we can practice from home that will improve our performance in the water. Let’s embrace this time of solitude to create new routines and ways of living. In the face of solitude, community carries on.
    ---
The Molchanovs Mission is to share our love of freediving with the world. We do this by cultivating the level of knowledge and skill of all freedivers, by building global and local communities that fuel passion for freediving, and by developing gear that provides the best freediving experience possible.
Our inspiration, Natalia Molchanova, is one of the greatest and most decorated freedivers in history. She was a passionate educator and a role model to many in the freediving community. Molchanovs is firmly rooted in her philosophies and approach to freediving, and is continuously updated with the latest developments in education, technology, and scientific research. We are inspired and honored to have had Natalia as our inspiration. Without her, the Molchanovs Movement would not exist today.

Just need a clarification on when deconcetration would be useful.
From my understanding, concentration technique is a form of meditation, where a diver focus on one thing at a time without any distractions, or blocking all distractions. While deconcentration is absorbing all the foreground distractions/noise, until it becomes ambient/background noise, so that the diver is able to get back into concentration technique.
Is that how deconcentration technique is used hand in hand with concentration technique?

Both concentration and concentration are meditation techniques with similar benefits. The main difference is that you are concentrating on one thing or at everything at the same time.
Deconcentration is beneficial when you have distractions around (not ideal conditions for concentration only at one thing).

There's a term "Flow" I believe this is what you're talking about. I have it when I ski or ride a motorcycle or a mountain bike. You see everything while looking at nothing. Your body turns into a huge receptor. You feel with everything and I think your brain is actually orders of magnitude more active but in such an efficient way that you are using less energy. I really believe Mountain Biking is the best way (for me) to get into that state because you just feel the rocks, roots, other bikers, it's like you are a part of the world around you. It's a glorious feeling.

Yes it is very similar to that state of flow that you are describing! And we think that this is something that can be taught and activated on cue with practice! Thank you for your great input!
