The main problem with growing a coconut tree inside a house during winter and not producing fruit isn't the temperature being too cold, it's the lack of sunlight. Coconut palms grow and produce fruit as far North as Central Fl, which is growing zone 9b, and sometimes has a few Winter freezes below 32 deg. and also high temps in the 50's for many days during winter. So really it's fairly easy to grow a coconut tree that fruits in a proper large greenhouse with a tall 12-15 ft tall ceiling. All you have to do is recreate a zone 9b or higher climate which basically means you can go down to about 32 deg during winter as lon as there is enough sunlight to bring the highs back up to 50-60 deg most days, and then as long as the other 3 seasons temps in the greenhouse are above 60 night and 80 day, with good sunlight, you'll eventually have fruit in a few years with a dwarf tree. After 5-10 years, the coconut tree will begin to reach the ceiling of the greenhouse and become too tall, so a trick is to have grown it in a ver large pot abiut 30 true gallons, and then when it's getting too tall, just lay the coconut tree on it's side so the whole trunk is running parallel to the ground and make supports to keep the trunk just a few inches off the ground. Now the tree will have to make a 90 deg bend to start growing vertically again and in a 12 foot tall greenhouse, you'll get another 10ft or more of vertical growth over the next 10 years or so. Plus it would look amazing having a 20-25 ft tall coconut tree with half of the trunk lenght down low parallel to the ground. It's worth the investment building a proper large greenhouse thats 20ft x 20 ft x 12 - 15 ft high or more. If the water table isn't too high, it's even better to dig a large 8-10 ft deep pit the size of the greenhouse footprint and put a greenhouse over the pit then you could have over 20-25ft of headroom inside and even more warmth during winter from ground heat. If you reasearch "Walapini" this basic design of an in ground greenhouse would work amazing in California to easily recreate a humid tropical climate.

Wow, I’ve never really heard of that before. The coconut I visited was in a fairly shaded spot with little to no sunlight, but I’d assume it survived because it was shaded from cold precipitation and the dry heat. But with the funds to build such a greenhouse, it would be pretty cool and unique project.

You could use soil heating cable to keep the roots warmer in the winter also just by adding a 55 gallon barrel full of water and painting it black you could add humidity and natural heating from the sunlight heating the water in the barrel in addition you can also use a aquarium heater in the barrel if need be on really cold nights a book I would like to recommend to you is by David the good call pushing
