    We have an amazing one in south Cocoa Beach Florida on the river. Harvested about 30 yesterday we all enjoyed at a family party.
    Great video!

      They love growing in the river with the low water shelf-our coconuts grow 4 times faster by the river compared to those I plant in my front yard. Sounds like an awesome party!

    So jelly...Jax is way too far north...I started two in Lake Placid, but they got the frost bite 2 years ago, very slow to recover...I do miss the warmer climate of central Fl...I'm ready for some heat, other then my furnace that kicked on earlier...geez...CHEERS...!

      I know we have seen coconut palms in Coco Beach, and I think I remember seeing them in New Smyrna last time we were up there, but I cant picture any growing any further north. Our neighbor here had some of his die off from cold weather 15 years ago, but none since then. He said some of them lost their tops altogether, but recovered... We just LOVE them and all of the coconuts we get!
      I hear you with regards to the cold- we are from north Georgia and never take our warm weather down here for granted!!!

    Well actually I'm in palm bay and have two smaller ones growing but they grow well out here as I've seen numerous trees growing and producing well in Palm Bay

      Awesome! We had a neighbor with a cattle ranch off 192 a bit more west than you- she was not able to grow them to grow without loosing them frequently to the cold. Glad you are successful!

    Would like to see how you open the ones that are ripe and give you the meat. Thanks!

      Gotcha- we will try to do a video for you. Opening green coconuts is a breeze- brown coconuts (ripe ones) are much tougher!!!

      Thanks for the tip! That makes sense-all living things need extra attention even plants;-)

    Do you sell dwarf coconut plant by mail? I think you can make coconut soap and shampoo too.

      @IslandsnHighlands  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No not yet but we do have a Florida nursery license and will probably start selling plants in the near future.

    So, I just saw a sweet deal on ebay for some 1.5 ft tall Dwarf Coconut trees for $20 each so I ordered a couple. I prefer the look of the separated leaves, rather than one big leaf on juvenile plants, and I've been searching the internet to find out it it's ok to split and separate the leafs into lots of separate ones on a young plant, but can't find and answer. What do you guys think, would this hurt the plant? I imagine that being out in the wind would do this naturally, but not sure if I need to wait until the tree os a little bigger. Thanks! Excited to have a go a growing Sone Dwarf Coconuts!

      @IslandsnHighlands  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome you found a dwarf coconut! Sweet! I have no idea whether you could separate the young leaves. We would have to try it out. We have a bunch of newly sprouted coconuts maybe we will try it out! Interesting idea

      @@IslandsnHighlands I've seen some super interesting youtube vids where they Bonsai some small coconuts and do pretty heavy frond pruning and splitting, but thats for ornamental and not growing fruit so who knows. Looking forward to seeing what you find out if you try it. That's the beauty of having so many new coco trees growing you can try experimenting without too much worry!

    • @IslandsnHighlands
      @IslandsnHighlands  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah! I’ll keep you posted to see what happens…I was just noticing we have several newly sprouted coconuts! Going to have to make a new queens bread video with a couple of them too!

    • @IslandsnHighlands
      @IslandsnHighlands  ปีที่แล้ว

      @nateross14 I was playing around with my coconuts in pots (about a year old) and noticed the leaves were already separating. I pulled apart one of the leaves and it easily came apart…so my guess is that it’ll be fine. I’ll keep an eye and keep ya posted. But one year old plants the leaves were already separated

    • @mattbuszko
      @mattbuszko 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      as subsequent leaves emerge, they will start splitting. I can't imagine that manually splitting it will hurt it, though, but I don't know. How far north are you? They correctly identified Cocoa Beach and Merit island (on the east coast) as being the farthest north. Any farther, or inland, and your coconut will die after a year or so.

      You might be pushing it…if you are close to a big lake that could help! Maybe get some to sprout and grow so you aren’t invested in it a lot of money just in case you get a cold snap that takes it

    • @mattbuszko
      @mattbuszko 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      it's very, very unlikely they will grow there. Sorry. I don't wish to discourage you, but you should just know what you're getting into. The likeliest outcome is death within 1 year. The next likeliest is that with lots of care, it survives 1-3 years and then dies. The least likely, but still somewhat within the realm of things that can happen, is that it lives for 7-10 years and never flowers or fruits.
      But, you should still try just for yourself. Experimenting is fun.

      You have no idea how excited I was when we moved to Florida in our first home and were lucky enough to find a house with a fruiting coconut tree in our backyard! I was in total shock that it was possible and I will never get over their utter beauty! Coconuts are the tree of life and they provide SO many things!! I honestly have collected most of our coconuts from neighbors who set them out on trash pickup day-so the specific varieties are uncertain. We do have one dwarf variety we have been trying to sprout its offspring this past year and still waiting. Hoping to get some of those to plant! We also have green coconuts and king coconuts-both kinda generic plant names but that’s what we call them. King coconuts are yellow and have the sweetest coconut water

      That's great! I’ve growing three of those, Golden Malayan, Green Malayan and Red. I don't know if those are really Malayan though. Also, I got two sprouts from coconut I got from a Indian store. Those are from South India. I live in a small condo in Tokyo and I have to keep them inside during winter. I love coconut palms.

      Greetings from Florida! That’s amazing you have coconuts in Tokyo! That must be so cool for your friends to see growing! I’m not sure if ours are Malayan coconuts or not, I think the dwarf might be a Malayan. But I think dwarf Malayans are shorter than the dwarf coconuts we have growing. It’s so exciting to hear we have people watching our videos from all over the world! Great to hear about your coconut plants!

      @@IslandsnHighlands Long time back, I didn't know the coconut palms are weak on cold weather and some I led them died. Good thing abou my condo is that temp. is kept around 60deg.F so they survive. The oldest one has been 12years since I bought, but still about 6ft tall. The other two are 10 years and they are about 5’5 and 7ft. Seems like yellow coconuts taste better drinking. Are there a lot of Jamaica Tall in Florida? Anyway, I’m looking forward to watching your next video.

    The thing about coconuts I that in areas north of your area they can grow successfully, but every 10 Years or so there's a cold snap that kills alot of coconut palms back.

    • @IslandsnHighlands
      @IslandsnHighlands  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you are correct- I should have clarified that in the video. We had a neighbor with a cattle ranch off 192 in Osceola County (about 20 miles inland from the Atlantic)- she could "grow" them for a couple years before loosing some or all to cold weather. In the video I was trying to identify areas around us and a little farther north where Coconut Palms will survive the local winter temps and grow to maturity.
