Think of the countless hours of practice, plus a natural gift, that it takes to perform like this. I watch this periodically and never cease to come away completely amazed at this performance. Flat out awesome and something I'll bet 95% of trombonists could never do, even those who are quasi-professional. I'm thankful Marshall has chosen to share this with us and I give him a tip of my hat! Just tremendous!
Almost 9 years ago in my Sophomore year of High School this video inspired me to take the Trombone seriously. Trombone and music in general became my rock through that turbulent stage of my life. Since I graduated HS a lot more life has happened and I've neglected the Trombone for several years. I think this same video is going to inspire me to start taking it seriously again.
Everyone is right about your tone and flexibility. Props to you for doing this on, what it looks like, and medium small bore horn. Nice, good Pedal F to constant strong Double High F's, with more of a soft sound than laser. Great Job!
Ok so im in high school trying to find good solos for a solo and ensemble competition and this has just inspired me to find something really good. I have never seen anyone so good at the trombone, im speechless, im just listening to this over and over again just OMG wow. Im just sitting in my room speechless ... Great Tonguing, wish i could do that, i can barely get double tonguing down so ya. Great Job though! :)
Just fabulous Marshall. It would take the talented trombonist YEARS to even come close to that kind of trombone excellencel - if ever. Congratuations of your conquest of such a difficult and beatiful-to-the-ear pleasing intstrument. Hope you have a wonderful future with such a magnificent horn.
I'm a trombonist - and have been for 40 years or so - and know and admire the instrument greatly(in my opinion the best overall instrument - and the oldest - in the orchestra) and this man ranks as the best I've ever heard. How he can seemingly dance from high register to petal tones is amazing. Trombones forever!
i am starting to play again after like 5 years and i wish i had that articulation, range and just power at that speed makes me stop and think no matter how good i ever was i have lots of work to do. great job.
4:20 His Chops Are Blown...You are a truly Inspiring human Being I was In Concert Band for 4 Years as the 2nd and 1st Chair Trombonist and I thought I had Amazing chops... Please Post More Videos..
I envied the flexibility of his ability to play petal tones and immediately the upper range. However, the real test of virtuosity is triple and double tonguing up and down and not slurring.
Another test of virtuosity is to slur it. Both slurring and tonguing are tools used in playing brass, so I don't know why you'd imply that slurring is not difficult.
He holds his slide a weird... BUT IT WORKS!! My trumpets don't even play that high!! And we (the trombones) can't even touch that sickness!! Ecspecially since I'm in sixth grade!! AMAZING!! DOOD, YOU ROCK!!
Great Goodness! You have that /AMAZING/ jazz soloist tone that sounds so warm and perfect. I've rarly witness that kind of control of range and tone, and it makes me so pleased to play the Trombone everytime I can hear it. Your pedal tones sound better than what I've heard out of some Bass Trombonists. 5 stars all the way.
This guy is amazing!! I can say I've had the priviledge to play with him a couple of times for a local salsa band (Ray Jay). Thanks for posting! I totally love it!
@YouFreakinTroll Triggers are not mounted only on bass trombone. Tenor trombone have triggers to. It's mostly a purpose of virtuosity, because you don't need to strecth your arm : the smaller the moves, the faster you can play. Of course, as the trigger pulls the tone down a fourth, you can play lower notes, but the trombone remains a tenor.
I saw this guy at the Eastern Trombone Workshop. I think it was better seeing him live. This video is great, but I saw him live and man was this guy amazing. He's probably one of the best rising trombonists. He has a CD, if you like this video, I recommend buying it.
I've seen Marshall Gilkes a few days ago with Richard Bona. Till then I didn't know him, but it took only a few minutes to realize that Richard Bona has an excellent trombone player in his band. His timing and intonation was absolutely correct independant from the tempo he was playing. Then I saw this video and I'm much more impressed now !!
Okay, I'm back =^^= I love this too much, I'm trabscribing some of the pedal note leaping madness of doom because it's kind of a good warm up. And on top of my utter amazment, I want to know what brand of Trombone is being played... I love the engravment on the bell.
I play trombone, and I'll tell you this: Slide-o-mix or slide cream (with water) I personally prefer slide-o-mix because it comes in a bottle and you can apply it without getting too dirty (slide creams last longer but are a bit more pain to apply)
Tenor - you standard symphonic trombone... though these come in different bore sizes to fit the typr of playing being performed, such as symphonic, jazz, etc... a lot depends on the size mouth peice you are using as well... Bass - This is a popular trombone as well, mostly used for lower register playing, often found is big band groups, symphonies, and soloists...
NICELY DONE! I love the jumps from the petal tones to middle and high register @ 2:56... very nice! Are there certain things I could do to improve my ability to do this?
Wow this is some really great playing. I really like your tone. I'm not sure if you are using a large bore trombone or not, but it definitely sounds like it because you have such a full tone. Great pedals too.
most are commenting about sheet music. Well if your good enough to play it your good enough to listen. Minus the crazy fast parts (for which I substituted my own) I had this piece completely down just by watching it. Great exercise.
@The836812 Because he doesn't need it. A trigger is helpful to play faster, or maybe if you have short arms (i don't know, i'm 6' 5"). I did'nt listened carefully enough but on this cool piece he may not need to play notes on the 6th or 7th position in a fast sequence, so he doesn't need a trigger.
I mean, I've never heard you play, but I doubt only cleaning up your upper range could get you the numerous other aspects which makes this solo so virtuosic. Additionally, I believe it is an improvised solo, but if you are willing to transcribe it (might need tenor clef for some of the higher stuff) then I'll gladly take a copy :)
I love that in other videos of this guy people say he has so swing. WTF people?! Gilkes is a beast and deserves as much recognition as any other player alive.
@2E0N0W2 A Shires is Definitely not a beginner horn. Mr Gilkes is playing a straight jazz tenor, most likely 500 bore, and doing a remarkable job on it might I add. I have a similar Shires which knocked me back $2800. While it's true that it is not the instrument, but the person playing it. There is nothing like playing a great well crafted instrument that helps get the point across.
and btw as another example of how u hold the horn, mark nightingale also holds the horn wierd and he kicks butt. so yea, i do support what u say to a degree.
Still one of the best trombone videos and solos of all time!

One of my earliest videos and one of my most successful thanks to the huge talents of Marshall agilkes.
Finally got to see Marshall perform in person at JEN a few weeks ago! Awesome stuff!
man, words cannot express how awesome this is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WOW, this guy is friggin awesome!! If I had a fraction of his chops!!! Sickness!!
This guy came to my school, he was amazing!
i am starting to play again after like 5 years and i wish i had that articulation, range and just power at that speed makes me stop and think no matter how good i ever was i have lots of work to do. great job.

Amazing and inspiration. Range, phrasing and articulation are superb.
that's beautiful .such passion is always a listening pleasure. encore
BRAVO!!!, buenísimo, que virtuosismo.
best instrument ever.
Es increíble el sentimiento que desbordas este hombre en su improvisación. Hacía mucho que no sentía algo tan fuerte escuchando un trombón.

Douglas Jue triple tounging is for fools
He did both lol
He holds his slide a weird...

what a beautiful piece of music.
A nice jazzy piece of Trombone. The combination of pedal notes with high notes is amazing.
This man is the reason I pick up the trombone every day. Talk about an inspiration.
Its inspiration every time I watch it. This solo is amazing man, such control. No note is out of palace.

Great Job!
omg so goooooooooood so soothing
dang, amazing control
I bow down. this is really great... (I still don't know, how you can play so high - but that's normal, I am a basstrombone player...)
@f3tuscannon Shires. I'm not sure what model, but it's sure a great horn.
Awsome! I'm learning to play the trombone and I'm not so good, but your video has inspired me :)
