As a precursor and part inspiration for 'We Are The World', Quincy Jones gathered some of the top artists and musicians of the day for his production of this song written by Vangelis and Jon Anderson. Summer's version featured Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie, Dionne Warwick, Kenny Loggins, Brenda Russell, James Ingram, Eric Clapton on guitar and more. The song 'State Of Independence' is a highlight of the Jones' produced album entitled 'Donna Summer'.
This is notable for its all-star choir which included Lionel Richie, Dionne Warwick, Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Brenda Russell, Christopher Cross, Dyan Cannon, James Ingram, Kenny Loggins, and Stevie Wonder. - just imagine!!

I’m a big Jon & Vangelis fan and I love the original but what this lady did was knock it out of the park and took it somewhere other worldly. This track brings tears of joy and fills my heart with hope.

I agree wholeheartedly, @William Henry Grant! I am a huge Jon Anderson and Vangelis fan. Yet Donna Summer brought other world life to this amazing song. Her voice, her passion, and her superstar friends that backed her made this EPIC.
This song is on another level, particularly her version of it, along with Quincy Jones and the All Star Choir. Of all the songs that have been reacted to on TH-cam, I wish this one would get more reaction time. It is that good and powerful of a song.
Despite the original by Jon and Vangelis and this knockout version by Donna Summers the definitive version of this song has got to be the one by MoodSwings with Chrissy Hynde on lead vocals. It's worth a listen

The precursor to We Are The World....So why wasn't she invited to sing on We Are The World, Q??? She should've been at Oprah's Legends Ball as well. But that's the way we do our people sometimes. Nevertheless, a heavenly song right here. Rest In Peace, Donna. You transcended race and genre. An angel on earth with a heavenly voice, really.

Wow, I did the same thing 5 years ago when I came across this song for the very first time, I came across it again just last night after some time. I now have downloaded every version of this song for my listening pleasures and dancing to this every time I hear this. It Lifts me UP and My Spirit Soars with INFINITE LOVE for ALL! Does it supplant Jon Anderson's version, for me Yes (scuse the pun), Donna's voice and the choral backing are sublime and neck hair raising... Stunning.

An amazingly beautiful cover of Jon Anderson's song he wrote with Vangelis. I have a hard time deciding which version I like better, this or Todmobile with Jon himself singing. So I listen to both, often! Donna takes a little poetic license by adding scripture but, considering Jon created the lyrics on the spot as he was singing it the first time, the spiritual origins are pretty clear. There are quite a few covers of the song and I hope the whole world will be singing it soon! I'm certain Jon would be pleased!

What's sad is that this very song didn't do enough damage in pushing the overall album to excess and massive sales.
Does anyone know if Ms. summer ever sang this with Mr. Anderson? Such contrasting styles brought together in a masterpiece of genre defying composition.
If you listen to the original of 'State of Independence' with Jon and Vangelis, at the end you hear a voice saying, "I like that" That voice is Donna Summer's voice. It is my understanding that she was there when it was recorded. Pretty Cool!!

I didn’t know until recently that Jones was producing Donna’s music. So if this song catapulted We are the World, then why wasn’t Donna there with everyone else?
🤔 There's a snippet of video out there of Donna answering that question. She responded that she wasn't asked to participate. I think the video is from somewhere in Europe in the early '90s? I came across it on one of Donna Summer's fanclub groups on Facebook.
