Getting to gather all these brilliant artists under one roof was a tour de force, it showed the respect and admiration they had for Donna and Quincy! The footage itself is priceless!!
Donna Summers voice is the most beautiful pleasing to the ear and in my opinion there's never been any never will be a singer with such a voice, she was a Goddess..
im so sad, that the world has changed so bad.. No more music, no more feelings, no more great song bring you up , make you feel good and love. This song is pure love. Great musicians, michael Mc Donald, James Ingram, dionne Warwick, Mj, Quincy, Stevie, Ritchie, the creme of the creme
It’s important to clarify, as others have noted, that this video is misleadingly titled. It is not a Michael Jackson recording session but rather the background vocals recording for Donna Summer’s incredible cover of Jon Anderson and Vangelis’ State of Independence. While the original song is excellent, Donna’s cover, in my opinion, stands out as the best. Quincy Jones did a phenomenal job assembling an all-star choir for the background vocals. As for the timeline, I can’t recall if this session happened before or after the recording of We Are the World, or if the same group of singers transitioned directly between the two projects. Perhaps someone else could clarify. Either way, this was not a Michael Jackson solo session, although he did participate alongside many other immensely talented artists in the choir. While Michael Jackson was incredibly popular and had more hits than most of the other singers involved, that doesn’t automatically make him the standout voice in this ensemble. The beauty of this recording lies in the collective talent and harmony of all the vocalists involved, not just one individual.
this was done years before, and not in any relationship to We Are The World. It is interesting that many of the same vocalists were present at both sessions. (Brenda Russell, Patti Austin, and Christopher Cross were not present for We Are The World, and of course, there were many others present at the latter recording).
It is to date classed as the Greatest Background Vocals for a Solo Artiste in History. The Measure of how great Donna Summer was and is 💃🏽🪄💫🔥🙌🏾💎💎💎👑👑👑❤️🙏🏾

Thrilled to see this footage. Thank you. Great gathering of talent for this awesome song. Sorry it didn't go to the top of the charts. DIANA ROSS was NOT a part of this All-Star Chorus. Ross was not present, and she does not appear on the album credits.
I loved this song when it came out and I was in high school. I had no idea of the production. I am totally amazed. All these egends singing background ❤
Donna Summer is on record as saying that she didn’t want to record this song because she thought that it was too much of an out there arty kind of song that wouldn’t suit her. But Quincy Jones, having seen how the original was so successful for Jon Anderson and Vangelis, knew that it was perfect for her style of delivery and her voice. So, with very little modification (a few minor tweaks here and there), she recorded it magnificently!
It was a smart move on Donna’s part to do the song. In 1982 she was still viewed as a disco has been. A song like this moved her into an entirely new lane.
This song! This ensemble! The message! Donna Summer! This song should have been huge, but Geffen, who forced the coupling of Summer and Jones, released a horribly mixed single and obviously a 0 budget for a video and the song went nowhere in America. Such a tragedy. Thank you Quincy Jones for assembling this all star choir and of course Michael. You and Donna are missed greatly.
You have to remember, this was 1982, before all the entertainment media we have now. I had the album, so I knew they were all featured in the chorus since they were listed in the credits, but Jet Magazine actually had a short article about it back then…they interviewed both Donna and Quincy. But they didn’t take a billboard about it…why would they?
Yes, they wrote it, which they have credit for, and they released it as a single in 1981. All of that is true. Is it Michael Jackson's song? Because his name is the first thing in the title. No, he just sang with other great singers in a choir on this song, which was a brilliant idea. But, I'm okay with that because someone is focusing on what Michael did, and the footage after the recording is pretty interesting to see these people greet one another and sing like the pros that they all are. But, do you honestly believe that no song should ever be referenced with an artist's name unless that artist wrote it and recorded and released it first? So, I can't say Diana Ross' song Ain't No Mountain High Enough? Or, Donna Summer's song Mac Arthur Park? Then, you can't ever say, Olivia Newton-John's song because she didn't write any of her songs, and the same goes for Whitney Houston. The only song one could say is Barbra Streisand's song is the only one she wrote - Evergreen. Usually, it is only meant to refer to that particular artists' version/recording of the song. I don't see what the big deal is. On Donna Summer's Quincy Jones produced version, Jon Anderson and Vangelis are credited with writing the song. Donna was always careful to ensure everyone got credit for their work. And, it is likely that Quincy Jones asked permission from Anderson/Vangelis to record the song with Donna Summer.
@@SWSimpsonThe title of this video is disimformative. The lead vocal of this song is sung by Donna Summer and Michael Jackson among other singers backing vocals.
@@orangewarm1Maybe people in your social bubble would say whatever you want to hear. The song was written by Jon Anderson and Vangelis. It is a fact and you cannot do anything about it... CORRECT YOUR TITLE - this was a song on a DONNA SUMMER album bearing her name - Michael was just there to sing backup - not lead as your title suggests! @@patrickjoly7830 Okay, yes I know that and thank you. But at one point her name was referenced associated to this song/video and many have pointed out my same commentary how she was not at all involved.

Neither was Diana Ross like the video mentioned. Who was the woman in all black on Christopher Cross’ left…she looked so much like the great Cheryl Lynn, but that lady didn’t have Cheryl’s killer smile.
Why was Love Is Just A Breath away a B-side? It was the best song on that album. Donna Summer would have had another top 10 hit if it had been released.
So, Donna Summer wasn't invited to be a part of this chorus? Donna usually sang in the chorus of most if not all of her songs up until the Quincy Jones 1982 album.
She was very pregnant and not feeling well at the time, but it had to be done without her since they couldn't reschedule all these people again....Donna's sister Dara is the woman in black next to Christopher Cross
Thumbing this down because it's a Donna Summer track and recording session so very badly credited for clickbait. Jackson was only there because Quincy Jones invited him to be part of a backing choir. He may of subsequently sold more records than the others but his voice was no better than his contemporaries on this fine single.
Actually it should be Donna Summers - State of Independence, but whatever . . . still a cool video. Check out Jon Anderson's version. It's a different approach, but really good, as well.
