(Update: The SUN newspaper- 8/10/20, “Patients at Patton sue over alleged failure to keep them safe from coronavirus,” by Tony Saavedra. United States District Court, Central District of California, Eastern Division; Case #5: 20-cv-1559. Click the link to view story docdro.id/W3WzqIZ)
DSH-Patton: 050120, Ervin Longstreet, tells us in this interview that staff at Patton State Hospital can be seen in the office not wearing their masks, or wearing their masks pulled down below their chin. This violates a statewide policy directive from Stephanie Clendenin, Director of State Hospitals, that all staff is required to wear masks when working in close proximity to others, or in patients care areas. Furthermore, Mr. Longstreet states that patients were given no instruction on how to wear the masks that were issued to patients, or how the masks should be cared for. Even more alarming, Mr. Longstreet, who is committed as a PENAL CODE SECTION 1370 ("Not Guilty By Reason of Insanity"), erroneously believes putting moisture on his mask will protect him from the Corona Virus. Mr. Longstreet states that he had a brain tumor removed from his head that cured him of his mental illness and many of his medications have been terminated. Finally, Mr. Longstreet asserts that many of the PC1370 patients are working in industrial technology jobs and meeting the same criteria for release that is required to hold one of these job positions. He states that the patients who meet these criteria are languishing at Patton State Hospital for extended periods of time rather than be considered for the conditional or unconditional release in a timely manner.
(July 7,2020 Update: when dshabuse.org learned that staff was not wearing masks as mandated and that patients were not being educated of the use of their masks, Jeff attempted immediately to advocate for them. Of great concern was Mr. Longstreet's belief that moisture on his mask would protect him from the Corona Virus. Multiple telephone calls to advocate and express concern were made to Jennifer Gorsuch, public information officer, and Janine Wallace, Executive Director at Patton State Hospital, were rudely refused and rejected. Jeff was told to make a Public Records Act Request if he wanted any information about how patients were being treated at the hospital. When Jeff contacted the DSH Legal Department, He was told it would take weeks or months to get a response on any of his policy inquiry questions. There was a similar lack of response or interest from Disability Rights California, The Office of Law Enforcement Support, and the Department of Public Health. Finally, Jeff was directed to contact the Coalinga Treatment Team, Which consisted of Kevin Bottorff, Antonio Reantaso, Jennifer Warring, Deborah Cotterman, Gladys Mendoza, and Lidcy Magdaleno. The Coalinga Treatment Team stated that these issues were none of Jeff's business, nor should he be bringing these issues to their attention as there was nothing they can do about them. Also, the Senate Sergeants office, Senate Holly Mitchell, and received no response from these entities.)
The Senate Rules Committee made a big mistake when it confirmed Pam Ahlin and Stephanie Clendenin on August 26,2015, Director positions for DSH. What is now going on inside of Patton and other facilities reflects the leadership from the Director and Deputy Director of State Hospitals.
