Gerry is back for another Let's Play where we dived into the first of our Bolt Action Campaign Games. We used Combined Arms to set us up for this and now we're going up against Gaz from Warlord Games once again here.

Things continue in this clash as two forces move from the air to the land and battle it out on the tabletop. Here, the Japanese are clashing with the US for control of the Pacific.
Do you like the idea of spreading your games over land, air and sea?

Awesome game! That japanese unit needs a metal, they where a sledge hammer!

How does the Combined Arms board game affect the Bolt Action tabletop game? I see some cards were played (extra preparatory bombardment) but does the board game have any affect on the size and composition of the forces or the geography of the battlefield?

@Gerry mcCabe Thanks for your response. I was wondering how the points translated but as you say it is more up to the participants than a hard coded conversion so that makes sense

I am so torn when it comes to table top war gaming specially ww2 I love the models and so fun and relaxing to assemble and paint but I find the rules and setup so…. I’m sorry kind of silly way too much is left up to the dice(chance) and no one seems to try to simulate something like fog of war and quite the opposite most battle report contestants are really transparent with their every move and placement of units and everything is there a game out there that allow you to just place a cardboard sheet in between until units reach shooting range?

You might want to try card driven wargames.

There is no shame in just collecting and painting the units. In Warhammer 40k, as a matter of fact many of the highest level painters don't even play the game.

Chain of Command captures the Fog of war pretty well. Check the battle reports for that game on this channel.

even with fog of war and such this is the challenge of tabletop wargaming. Having a birds eye "god" level view of everything and everyone going on, versus what your minis technically shouldn't know or be aware of. Some of the better games I've played incorporated some sort of token to represent a unit and the actual composition of the unit doesn't get revealed until it is "spotted" somehow. While you still kind of have an idea where units are being moved around you don't necessarily have any idea what that unit might actually be until you physically spot it.
You could have each player hand draw a map representing the battlefield and mark where certain hidden units are deployed, and/or moving until spotted. Similar to how some hidden movement board games handle it.

Hey, I'd recommend checking out NUTS! It has a really interesting engagement system that might scratch that itch, and has several levels of play- close firefights with a single squad, full plattons, or even bigger. The PDF is pretty cheap, and there's a really solid single player mode, as well as co-op and adversarial modes.

So I take it Gaz did the required nudie run around the gaming table? :D
