The best performance of all virtuosos. ever. As a young child growing up in the Kalahari desert in South Africa I listened to Yehudi Menuhin playing this with the Berlin Philharmonic orchestra. My parents had the most wonderful record collection. Wunderbare himmlische Musik!

The exceptional command of Yehudi Menuhim on the violin makes him the best soloist for this piece.

Absolut genial.

The day my dad died, December 14, 1990, someone on the hospital staff, as they were refitting his room (something that happens with near-irreverent dispatch and efficiency) handed me a bulky brown plastic grocery bag containing his portable cassette player, earphones, and some tapes to return to his home. A couple of the tapes were some I had put together for him with all the rock stars, Mozart, Papa Haydn, Vivaldi, the Bachs, and so on. The earphones had foam rubber pads to which were clinging short white and gray hairs from his beard and what little was left on his head. Chemo.
That night, after a day that started three states away and began before dawn, through his holding of my hand, or I his, who really knows or cares about that distinction, and my giving him permission at around 4:00 that afternoon to go wherever it is he has gone, through some dinner somewhere, oh yes, his favorite Chinese restaurant, then the calls to family including quasi-estranged siblings, one, barking mad, the other not so much then, and the other hovering in the ether between the two, a somewhat numb and vibrating state of fatigue, fear, and unbelief gripped me and persisted for a long time, until it didn't; not the best days I have ever spent.
When I tried settling down in his guest room, I opened the cassette player to find a commercial recording of this Violin Concerto in D major, the very recording and the only violin concerto Beethoven wrote, unless there are some undiscovered, of course. It's one of the best ever done by anyone anywhere. That superlative blather might be a bit grandiose, but maybe not. My dad loved Beethoven and by the time I was maybe five or six years old, I wasn't all that bad at recognizing pieces of music from Beethoven and his contemporaries, forebears, and successors. He would put something on and ask me what it was. I really liked the game, but his other descendants, my sisters, aren't all that crazy about it, nor have my spouses or friends been, with a couple of exceptions, who were then and are now a delight where music is concerned.
After our family exploded, and he and I were living together alone with the quizzes now and again, this was a piece about which I knew little, if anything until I found it in the player. That night I sat on the bed, put the headphones on, turned off the light, lay in the dark, started the tape, and let it run. This art put me to sleep that bad night.

My first introduction to this wonderful concerto when I was a senior in high school. My band director gave the album to me at the beginning of that school year, fall of 1978 and it was Menuhin performing. Mr. Housand died of cancer in January of the following year. I played the record after his funeral later that evening and just starting bawling. I tear up every time I hear this. RIP Prof....

Thinking of the innumerable great performers of this sublime musical piece of human genius. There's not a season when I don't get back to it with wonder. Its mystery lies in the cohesive harmony, that gives the violin the perfect evolution of a sometimes grandiose, yet always soulful melody, touring your mind with kid gloves

Ive never found anyone that can play the beethoven concerto. Yehudi is the closest. Too expressed slightly. No one gets beethoven. But me. You sit here within peril. Eager to think. Slowly you evolve. And enter romantically confused. Beethoven is the single greatest.

I'm not sure when this was recorded, but it finds Menuhin in some of his best late-stage form: more rhythmically controlled, better intonation, less scraping than, for example, the recording with Masur. And he seems more comfortable than he did on the collaboration (very ill-suited really) with Klemperer.

Maybe somebody can tell if this is the 1947 live concerto with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra conducted by Wilhelm Furtwängler or the 1953 studio recording with the same conducting the Philharmonia. Menuhin vowed never to play it again with any other conductor. To me, there's no better concerto nor better interpretation of it than this.

As a Collector and Admirer of the late Yehudi Menuhin he Recorded the work five times between 1947 and 1981(P1982)Unless you count the Recording taken from the live Concert given in Berlin in 1947 with Willhelm Furtwangler

Yes - it is a recording made with the Menuhin Festival Orchestra in 1971 but strangely not issued by EMI until 2003

thanks and sorry for the delay: The notification ended up in my junk email. I was very fortunate to see Yehudi Menuhin play the Beethoven concerto just about 10 years later in Los Angeles.

God sent Menuhin to earth so that mankind would know what a violin should sound like.

I suspect, since the orchestra listed is the Menuhin Festival Orchestra, that Yehudi also did whatever conducting the festival's chamber orchestra required.
