Richard Thompson! One of the most under-rated guitarists ever! One of very few guitarists who can play and sing a song on a single acoustic guitar and somehow manage to sound like a whole BAND! 'Onya Richard! Loved you with Fairport... loved you ever since! Love this song! Long may you ROCK! 😁
It's very difficult to under-rate RT considering he is obviously in the top 3 acoustic guitar finger style guitar players - it's simply a question of which position you choose in that top 3.
It's got my vote! (Well... I also like Martin Carthy's 12th century folk song, 'Famous Flower of Serving Men'... but for the guitar work in an open key, and if you're talking specifically about 20th century songs, then yes, this one probably just about does it!)
Sir Richard is just one of a kind. I've never heard a GUITARIST who is as confortable with an acousic guitar as an electric. Just watch "Can't Win"... Sir Richard is the most underrated guitarist of all time
Lol! And I wonder how often you've listened to it in the past 13 years...? I keep coming back to it every couple of weeks myself... (I don't get to listen to music as often as I'd like! Sometimes I do, though... Just to annoy the neighbours! Maybe once per fortnight!)
Best song Ever Simple boy meets Girl complicated by an Outlaw Motorcycle I found a pair in 1988 for $10,000 that was like a million dollars to me I just knew they were Beautiful we were building and riding Flat Heads
This is so good, such a great performance, of a song I've played literally a thousand times, that there are no words to do it justice. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
agreed. I was teasing. You know, jokes? Funny? Which is why I typed LOL. I have been a pro musician for 20 years. I love Suzanne, I've known her music for much longer than RT actually. But I would personally feel strange sitting there reading my play in a play swap with, say, Shakespeare. So clearly I shouldn't try to be funny on the Internet. Carry on!
The mototcycle is the essence. Besides if you wanted to pull a girl, what would you choose? A Merc. Brabus or Lamborgini usually does the trick around here. The streets are full of Ferrari and Porsche, but they are now too standard. The Vincent has a soul, as he says.
Thanks again, I have played the streets of Holland and Rhine lands of Germany, for so many years, life back then was : green tents hidden in the forests, and finger pads worn to a hard, solid tip, but that was 40 years ago. Met many a good musician, He is very good, but....... and .....however,......I have heard better.

A contender for finest song yet written

Can't win !!
"SIR" Richard? Did they give him a knighthood and no-one told me? (Well... no reason they should, I suppose, and good on him anyway!) 😁
PS: MUST look for 'Can't Win'!!! Thanks for the recommendation!
I have listened to this song exactly six times today. Tis great.

richard thompson can make a guitar sound like a whole band - he's a genius, as a guitar player, a singer and as a songwriter...
This is such a beautiful beautiful song. Mr Thompson is a genius. What a guitarist and a lyricist!

The Vicent 1952 leaks a lot of oil, but man is it fast when in tune......I had one.
It's hard to imagine.it gets
much better than this . . .
Who says you need electric to shred? This video is proof that when you've really, really, REALLY got, that all you need is an acoustic and your voice.
awesome - I heard him on NPR this morning...had to find this... thank you for posting it...
He is simply amazing.
A truly brilliant performance
Newly discovered..brilliant!

"It's a simple boy-meets-girl story.
Complicated somewhat by the presence of a motorcycle."
Captivated audience under his spell, could hear a pin drop..
Outstanding

Listen to House from the same show. That's musicians at their best. It took all three, no less, no more.

The other two are like DUHHHHHHHHHHHHH
That Box Hill spot, along the line of the River Mole, where pill boxes line the land from the world war two fear..

When I hear this song I just want to run outside, jump on my 1948 Vincent and ride! It is true,Ariels, BSAs, Rudges and Ducatis just won't do!
Musicians have respect for each other, we are all different, and we need each other, Do you play?
Yes I do, and you are so damn right

@frankie28web Yep, know his music since 1969 when he played with Fairport Convention. I saw him perform a couple of times, he is really amazing.
LOL @ Suzanne and Loudon hanging out on stage looking sheepish. I think I would just put my guitar down and walk off "Game over, you win RT".
lighten up, Unk - only jiving
truly incredible guitarist and songwriter.
All classic brands will do. And Ducati for shure.
👏👏👏👏👏
Hows anyone supposed to follow that :-)

What a boring song.
