  • Ayup Woodlanders, here's how I made a couple of Bird Boxes using RSPB plans.
If you're Abell To why not give it a go and help give a bird a home, they're not too fussy about how it looks as long as its cosy and dry.
The link gives you basic dimensions to consider and all sorts of extra info.

As you point out, because you used thicker timber, the internal space is reduced from 120mm wide to 95mm wide. That's important, as birds need a certain amount of space. An adult house sparrow is about 160mm in length, so it would struggle to turn around in your box.

That’s really interesting thanks so much, it’s definitely worth planning out the timber cutting to suit the birds that want a home.
      All the best Darren

Bird boxes are on my list f things to do this winter. I have a number of plans, for different birds and from a range of sources. The plans I favor open on a side or in the front, so you don’t have to take the box down and turn it upside down to clean. Just lid a panel on the side or front and sweep it out. I want to have a bunch of them done by early spring, when we start having our seed swap events. Give me something different to offer up.

A side or front opener sounds a great idea, might even negate the need to climb a ladder to clean

Love this Darren. Hope you and your family had a wonderful Christmas. That drill is huge 🙊
And I especially love the locator piece under the lid 👌
    They came out great 👏👏👏

I created an alternative, lots of interest from tits but never used 🤔. I had some 10" long x 8" wide silver birch logs, I hollowed out the center with a flat bit leaving about an inch in the base, cut the top at an angle, drilled the 25mm hole in the front and put a plank on the top to weatherproof it. I screwed a 350mm x 25 x 44 piece of treated timber vertically to the back and used that to fix it to its final location.
I used a stainless steel screw however I like the aluminium nail or screw idea, especially now I can use a chainsaw, finding that stainless screw would ruin my day 😲🤦🏻‍♂️ so I will make that change asap 👍.
Thanks for the video. Hope you had a great family christmas Darren, all the best Stu.

Sounds a lovely idea for a bird box, we have some on the workshop but nothing has gone in in about 4 years.

@@AbellTo Yes they look aesthetically beautiful but do seem to have little function so maybe back to basics for the next ones 👍

@@combitz we do our best to make them a home and then sometimes they nest in the strangest of places. Keep trying
