The lady in the cafe seemed really nice and friendly. I used the FlyBe Service to Amsterdam after dropping my mum at Stracathro hospital, I left the car at Dundee and flew home for a few days. It’s a cracking wee airport.
I spot both on my way in and out of work :) I really do hope we get more connections, it would be so handy. The change from City to Heathrow is a plus imho, I'm sure I'll be using it on a multi-leg hop some point.
I didn't know Dundee had an airport until I saw a plane landing while crossing the bridge. It was a scary few minutes while I assumed it was crashing into the city!
Passed Dundee Airport many times and thought it only handled private aircraft and was used for training pilots. Although the airport only has 3 routes, it's still more of an airport than I first thought. The potential for the airport to have more routes must be quite big. Dundee's population is 145,000 and with North Fife and Angus along with Perth then you have over 300,000 people within a 40 min drive of the airport. Great vid...
I must disagree with the "short walk from the city centre." It's actually a long way and has no bus stops nearby, which is horrendous planning. The council also claim it's a short walk, but try doing that riverside walk in the pouring rain and high winds. It's Dundee council all over, mindless planning.
@Hiforest it's a 20 minute walk. It's not practical with luggage at all. There's a bus to Edinburgh Airport that goes right past Dundee Airport but doesn't stop, it's stupid.
I used to fly from LCY to Dundee in the early 2000s with Scot Airways and I once flew from Leuchars when Dundee airport was getting resurfaced - a bus took us from airside at Dundee to airside at Leuchars !!
@Sofia-dailyorange4th The RAF handed Leuchars over to the Army several years ago, it’s now the home barracks of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards so there’s no way they could move the airport over there, although the runway and one of the HAS sites is maintained as a stand-by for aircraft from Lossiemouth.
@@buidseach Apparently Dundee were offered the former RAF Errol as its airport back in the forties but turned it down, that had plenty of room to expand, as did the former RAF Tealing just behind the city.
My gran worked security at Dundee airport for a while, which let me go visit other places of the airport like the ac tower and the fire guys, they let me, years ago when I was younger to rid in the truck and they brought me over to the practice plane to aim the spout, revisited them like 5-6 years ago, got to get a side by side photo with me against the fire truck, great people in that airport!
Love the video, I wasn’t aware my hometown airport now flew to Heathrow. I did a few flights home in years gone by from London city. I will definitely take a trip to website on my next visit home, there was a real convenience of being at my mum’s home 20 minutes after touching down 😃🏴
The problem with Dundee is the runway is too small, not big enough to host the Embraer jets in the Loganair fleet which would’ve open more possibilities.
I used to fly from Dundee all the time, but due to the price hike, I fly from Edinburgh for around £33 each way. It's a shame, as Dundee is super handy - even better when they flew to London City.
Cheers this review was really helpful to me, I live in Northwest London and go to uni in St Andrews so this flight could be really useful for me as it would be much quicker than the train or flying from Edinburgh/Aberdeen
Living in Dundee, the rapid time it takes for check-in/security makes the extra cost worthwhile. It has become a bit of a hub for executive private jets flying to locations all over the world so it still has that international status, just not affordable for most of us. It really has huge potential despite the smallish runway and would be great if other carriers considered it.
My grandparents were delayed for 6 hours at Dundee Airport in 2012 waiting for a Blue Islands charter flight to Jersey (it was the day Jersey Airport had to close for a few hours after the ATR42 undercarriage failure on landing). Dundee Airport staff let those who lived locally return home and phoned them with an updated departure time. What a service! There is one inaccuracy in your video at 4:15- Highlands and Islands Airports Limited operate Campbeltown Airport which is on the Scottish mainland and falls in the Argyll and Bute council area so Dundee Airport isn't the only one out with the Highlands and Islands.
It's interesting how you go from a very small 2 roomed airport with very small facilities etc to a huge giagantic airport surrounded by A380's 777's etc. Nice video as ever, also I enjoy staying in that Premier Inn at T4.
Excellent video, my granddaughter was very excited to travel from Dundee to Manchester, during the flight staff entered first class to greet a special guest who turned out to be Dame Collins from Dynasty. The purser entered first class to present Dame Collins with a glass of champagne. Upon leaving the aircraft Dame Collins began to complain that the airport was very cold! My granddaughter said aircraft staff were very kind but felt under pressure to cater for a celebrity as they don't often travel from Dundee.
My wee brother has been lucky enough to fly from Glasgow to the beach on Barra (I think) logan air.. I just recently found out that cumbernauld has an airport!
Dundee airport looks like a nice airport despite how simple it is! I would love to go make a trip report from Dundee myself & check out the airport for myself. Great video covering the airport!
Sadly I don't see much hope for significant expansion of routes from Dundee. It's runway and facilities just aren't enough to tempt airlines away from Aberdeen to the north and Edinburgh to the south. I'd take that flight for that price just for the novelty of landing at Heathrow on a turbo prop. Oh, and the tunnocks, of course! :)
I’m sure there used to be a Majorca flight from Dundee, which stopped to re-fuel in Jersey, operated on a BAE 146. Runway length was limiting factor in take off weight/fuel.
Great vid Dom and a greatly underrated airport. I wonder does it struggle because of its relative proximity to EDI? Interestingly, the first scheduled Loganair flight was from Dundee to Turnhouse, Edinburgh.
Personally, I don't think it's proximity to EDI is so much a problem as the runway length. Dundee was an international fairly recently and could be again. But for me, I prefer it's small size & simplicity, it's definitely part of the charm and it feels a more personal experience. 😅
Always waited on an actual high quality video on the local airport. Bang on with points you made about it. Would love a Belfast root back. It is shockingly tiny airport when you compare it to likes of Aberdeen and real shame it will never get bigger considering its geographic location in Scotland it would make sense to be much bigger hour connection to every major city in Scotland. I wish they brought back more roots to Amsterdam but can't see them doing that without flybe. It needs to be bigger especially for the private traffic with golf but I can't ever see it happening but odd the fact runway was made slightly bigger and resurfaced lately. Also pretty sure there is footage of an a320 landing in Dundee. Brillant video.
The only flights are to London. Plus they are very expensive. Cheaper getting a bus direct to Edinburgh and flying from there. Barra airport is busier than Dundee.
Great capture of the airport and flight down... a number of years ago I sat next to the boss of Logan air when they operated Edinburgh to Inverness Saab 340 and we had a chat about fleet replacement... he wasn't keen on the ATR at that time ... and thought the Saab 2000 operating costs were too high. On turbo prop aircraft I often find the last row to be the best if not in a hurry - seems quieter...
Flew from Dundee Airport over ten years ago down to London city Airport. Amazing views on takeoff. Great little airport and I really hope it gets a direct flight to Europe added to its destinations.
The problem with the airport is that it is not served by public transport. Ironically, the Xplore Dundee FLY coach to Edinburgh airport passes frequently along with the Ember Coach. It is a long walk from the city centre so the only option is a taxi. Damn pity that the Belfast flights were cancelled last year,
Thanks Dom for the latest vlog. I don't know whether or not you know but at one time Scot Airways would operate from LCY. It must be 25 years ago since I took that service. LHR makes more sense because of the connection possibilities it can offer compared to LCY.
Dundee airport looks cool but i think its unlikely to get more flights added due to its small size and Dundee has pretty good links to Edinburgh airport too.
Flew from Dundee to Heathrow last month... Brilliant service, Heathrow to central London is quick and good value compared to other airports. It is pricey, but I'm in Dundee so the convenience is invaluable... Cabin crew were great too...
Great video as always Dom! Very limited potential to expand the airport at Dundee in terms of flights or facilities. At best may get a connection to Dublin (albeit infrequent/ seasonal). Besides that, most folk from Dundee use Edinburgh Airport (and to some extent Glasgow or Aberdeen) as they are all only one hour or so drive away with a good selection of destinations served by low cost carriers.
Brilliant video as always!! Is the runway length at Dundee similar to runways at London City, Plymouth and Waterford to name a few. The only thing I find about domestic flights with pricing is unless you're flying on a route operated by a bigger aircraft then some of the prices are very expensive which is not helped by having to pay departure tax at both airports and when flying into or out of Heathrow, you have to pay the Heathrow passenger charge as well which I cannot remember how much it is now but it was between 30 and 40 quid the last time I looked into how much it was. Hope all is well, merry Christmas and a happy new year to you, take care of yourself
Great Video as always. Couple of points on things you mentioned, Dundee will struggle to gain more routes being so close to Edinburgh Glasgow and Aberdeen. Also the Route does not pay which is why it is a Public Service Obligation Route Funded by the Scottish and UK Governments
I used to drive a tanker. Did a job years ago in Dundee taking waste water from a vegetable washing plant down to the Tay where we disposed of it as it was non-hazardous and we could just pump it into the river. To get to the pump we had to drive across the runway at this airport 😂, no staff anywhere at night, we just drove in, stopped at the runway, had a look left and right then drove a lorry across it, it always seemed crazy but I guess there were no flights at night.

I fly between Dundee and Mexico City quite often but have always been put off using this flight because Its Heathrow and a terminal change from Landing in T2 to get to Aeromexico in T4 is a p.i.t.a as its horrendous as a transit airport. Hi Dom, I've watched a few of your videos and have now subscribed. I want to get to Edinburgh ( I live near Gatwick in Sussex) but seeing Dundee Airport seems more my cup of tea. What is there to see in Dundee? PS would love to fly with Loganair on this plane
Discovery Point, Verdant Works Museum, V&A Museum, McManus Gallery & Museum, Dundee Science Centre, Dundee Contemporary Arts Centre all within easy reach of the city centre. Also might consider visiting Broughty Ferry, a suburb with pleasant beach area and its own shopping high street, Dundee Law a hill with great views of the city and the historic university town of St Andrews a short 20 minute drive away with its old golf course.
@@cathybonner7888 another great thing about Dundee is the weather. It is known as the 'Sunshine City' (no laughing at the back...) It gets record amounts of sunshine - meaning loads of cold, crisp, but very bright days. It's s cracking city to visit for a couple of days. Good pub culture too.
Maybe my mistake but I thought that BA had a flight to Dundee from London City airport (on the Thames) that used one of their Embraers recently got over the last 5 years or so?
There are no public transport links directly to the terminal building however there are busses that stop on the Perth road then a 20 min walk or around 40-50 mins from the train station if you walk all the way along the front as I did, which in itself i find is a very pleasant walk.
One of the problems Dundee Airport has is there’s no real room for expansion, even when they extended the runway they extended it onto reclaimed land, it’s boxed in by the River Tay on one side and a road and rail line on the other, as for the current three routes the Dundee/Heathrow one may be disappearing in 2025 since it was to be subsidised by the Government for two years starting in 2023 and in the current financial situation it’s looking unlikely that the subsidy will continue.
Before 9/11 I once got from the centre of London to home in Perthshire in 2 and a half hours. 1830 Left Pub and got bus from Liverpool Street to London City Airport. 1920 Arrive at Airport for 1930 flight. Unbelievably, (now), they let me on. They were a bit mean because I'd had a few pints and I was bursting for the loo and they wouldn't let me go. However, somehow, they got me on the plane, so they were brilliant 2030 Arrive at Dundee. Straight off the plane and into taxi. No massive queues for luggage. 2100 Arrive Home. Not possible now.

In the past there have been routes to Belfast, Birmingham, Manchester, London City airport, Stansted, Amsterdam, Southampton, Denmark, Isle of Man and others.
All failed.
I fly between Dundee and Mexico City quite often but have always been put off using this flight because Its Heathrow and a terminal change from Landing in T2 to get to Aeromexico in T4 is a p.i.t.a as its horrendous as a transit airport.
I end up taking the airlink bus a
and going Edinburgh to Amsterdam and connect there.
Theres also the issue Heathrow flights arr in MEX at 3am!
I wish I could do it but until DND - AMS returns Im staying with KLM
Only used it once for a flight to Schiphol, it was fine but unfortunately that route was stopped shortly after.
wow small the isle of man airport
Nice informative video. Just wondering what the car parking facilities are like and what is the pick up/set down charge?
According to the sign outside it was, Short stay - Pay and Display £1.50 per hour (max 2 hours) & increasing in price from there.
Nice video. I have a request. Widerøe flight between Aberdeen and Bergen.
Great video of my local airport, where also work❤
Was off the day you were flying to heathrow
Glad you met jill at the cafe
Dundee does get a lot of private planes
Shame they lost the belfast and amsterdam flights😢
Come support our local airport, the council are looking at axing all loganair flights.nooo
You pay more from flying local and less congestion compared to edinburgh😊
@skarba-t4t plenty to do for a long weekend then? I think I'd prefer Dundee if the airport is quiet, I can't bear crowds
You sound like the captain or something when you're talking in the mic on the plane 😂
Well, the airport is technically on an island, Dom!
You took the Elizabeth Line, not the Tube, as I might have expected
Found y our channel yesterday, the Dundee airport, we have subscribed, and gone to the start of your vlogs!! going to enjoy this. Jimmy and David. 👍
Great video Dom.... What's the transfer from Dundee station like?
There are no public transport links directly to the terminal building however there are busses that stop on the Perth road then a 20 min walk or around 40-50 mins from the train station if you walk all the way along the front as I did, which in itself i find is a very pleasant walk.
@WorldWide_Dom Thank you. looks my type of airport. Anything to avoid Birmingham
You should try out universal Air from Malta you can try out their flagship route MLA-PEC-MUC
I just looked them up. Very interesting! I was planning to try KM Malta in the new year, so might have to combine them into 1 trip.
Wow dude one more route to Gran Canaria I’d live there
London City to Ibiza , not a video on TH-cam yet
Its a pity they dont fly to Inverness seeing as Its a Highlands and Islands airport
Even tho Dundee is my home city we probably don’t get the recognition because Edinburgh airport is only an hour away so people just look at that
Gosh, it's actually got bigger since I used it
One of the problems Dundee Airport has is there’s no real room for expansion, even when they extended the runway they extended it onto reclaimed land, it’s boxed in by the River Tay on one side and a road and rail line on the other, as for the current three routes the Dundee/Heathrow one may be disappearing in 2025 since it was to be subsidised by the Government for two years starting in 2023 and in the current financial situation it’s looking unlikely that the subsidy will continue.
However, somehow, they got me on the plane, so they were brilliant
2030 Arrive at Dundee. Straight off the plane and into taxi. No massive queues for luggage.
2100 Arrive Home.
Not possible now.
The City of Dundee also boasts one famous football team called Dundee United FC 🧡🖤
