What's the weirdest roadside attraction you have ever stopped at, and where was it?

On a road trip with my parents when I was a kid, stopped at some place in Nevada, don't remember where, but it had a lot pyrite (fool's gold) and creepy taxidermy everywhere. Strange place, gave me the creeps 😳😖

There are a lot of tourist traps in the U.P. near St. Ignace along US-2, some of them are featured on the old postcards used on the National Lampoon's Vacation movie in the credits. I think most states have weird roadside attractions, southern California has a lot.

I’m from northern Virginia and ever time I drive on I-64 going to Charleston, Kansas City, and recently Indianapolis, I always wanted to do a pit stop at this park! Can’t wait to do some hiking and practice my JKD training on the gorge!

I was never big into roadside attractions, but what I really do love is stopping to support local small businesses, like farm markets or old-style gas stations and food stops. I try to buy things like pastries, honey or just check the menu for something different for the trip. Always love meeting new people and sometimes you can learn about the area for places less touristy.

The name, “New River Gorge” is obviously named after “The New River,”- the same flowing waters etched in a U shape path seen far beneath the WV Grandview State Park overlook.
The New River is recognized as the 2nd oldest river in the world, estimating to be between 10 and 360 million years old.

I like the old train station turned in to an hotel, I think it is. That desolated ghost town with 3 buildings still standing could be a gem if someone would make it a tourist pit stop for convenience.

My original turf. Grew up in Virginia, about 45 mins south of New River NP in WV. Return in two months for the class 5 whitewater rapids... or in October to base jump the New River Gorge Bridge on Bridge Day! If you are looking for a next spot, consider the Grayson Highlands and Mt Rogers in Virginia. Wild ponies and a moderate hike up to the highest point in VA. Also pretty close to Smoky Mountains NP. Also Shenandoah NP in VA if you head west from New River NP. Safe travels.

@@AliceFordAdventures yes, it's anti-climatic since there's no view from the summit because of the trees. Solar eclipse next week! Be there or be square. I'm heading to Eagle Pass TX for it.

If you follow 60 out of Pittsburgh going west , it turns into US-30 & US-22, between is a lot of nice scenery and Racoon Creek State Park & Hillman State Park, you might want to check them out, it's hilly terrain all the way into Ohio through the West Virginia slice. There is a great view of Pittsburgh looking from the west on US-22 from the highest point on that route.

What a happy accident to come across your channel the day that we are heading to New River Gorge.
My husband, Mini Schnauzer and I are taking a month, traveling in our van from Phoenix, AZ to Rolesville, NC to meet our new grandson, born just 2 weeks ago. As we make our way to Rolesville and then back to Phoenix, we will have served the homeless in 6 cities, visited 7 National and State Parks, The Gathering Place and Black Wallstreet in Tulsa, the Creation Museum and Ark Encounter in Kentucky.
Today, after serving meals to the homeless at Mountaineer Food bank in Gassaway, WV, we are heading to New River Gorge for the weekend. I was
getting ready for the day this morning when I came upon your channel. Thank you for the info., especially regarding dogs allowed on most trails. We are going to follow your itinerary. Blessings and safety on your travels.

Yes it is a beautiful place to visit and used to be to live. Born and raised in the area. BUT, as others mentioned, the costs of literally everything, hotels, fast food, gas prices, retail stores, activities, outfitters, retailers, even the local Walmart got in on the overpricing to snatch the almighty tourism dollars, any and all accommodations sky-rocketed to ridiculously inflated prices LONG before the “ covid epidemic “ and has became increasingly difficult for people to afford just living in the area. Pitiful just how greedy commerce has became🤬 especially since the “ National Park “ expanded from what is was before, national river.
