  • A lawmaker who represents the people of Kade in Ghana's Parliament was incensed that law enforcers arrested his driver while he was en route to Parliament to make laws to govern Ghanaians never mind his driver was breaking road traffic laws in the process.
His driver's license was retrieved and he is expected to face the Abeka Court on Thursday, July 4, 2019. But the legislator Kwabena Ohemeng Tinyase turned his anger at his driver for handing his license to the Police.
Mr. Tinyase was not the only one nabbed in the exercise, a Citi TV initiative dubbed War Against Indiscipline #WAI in partnership with the Ghana Police Service. Several other offenders were apprehended. Citi News' Caleb Kudah reports the rather dramatic encounter in the following report.

Ghana can even generate decent revenue from these people who refuse to follow laws, simple.

They should implement spot fine. With all this officers and a cashier with them and all payment platform available ,they can make good money for the police service . They can then purchase a mobile van with a cashier and cameras in it record and been watched from the headquarters . Those who challenge their offence are processed to court.

I totally agree. These are one of the ways most developed countries generate revenue. They attach a fine to everything and they give you a specified timespan to pay. when the time is up they begin to increase the fine till you pay or an even more serious punitive measure is meted out. But, this will be hard to do since Ghana doesn't have a proper address system.

@Obed Osei-Tawiah Asante So do you mean the law (Article 117, 1992-- CER 1969) requires MPs to violate traffic rules and put other motorists in danger in order to make it to Parliament on time even tho it was within their power to get up early or fly to Accra from Ho or wherever at dawn. This is not a case of infringing on their privileges but a procedure he must follow and then be released later to continue the journey and mind you the driver was the one who was arrested and not his MP so does the privileges cover for that of the driver as well?

In UK, MPs and ministers join public trains to work. they join the queue to buy things and they pay their own rent and not live in govt flats. no minister uses a 4x4 car cos they can afford the associated cost. an MP is nothing, heś nobody, heś just a normal worker serving the people and heś not above the law. only the president and his vice, police, fire service and ambulance have rights of passage even if thereś heavy traffic. change your mindset Pat, these MPs are cheats!

It's unfortunate our Lawmakers are themselves taking the Law into their own hands. We haven't forgotten when Hon. Kobby Acheampong, then a Deputy Minister, slapped a Police Officer and threatened getting the Officer sacked because he was stopped for overspeeding and careless driving. Till date no one what became of the case.
Our VVIPS and VIPS should be concious of their time and the nature of our roads, hence if they want to be prompt and punctual to their schedules, nothing stops them from starting early from their homes instead of causing such an embarrassment to themselves, their constituents and the Legislature and Government.

This is not an excuse, law is law it doesn't have. any exceptions. Why should an MP hired a driver by his side? Every MP should drive by himself. Even in Europe and the other developed countries they drive by themselves

Driving counter traffic and that seem right to the MP to be boastful of - the ignoramus even had the nerves to mentioned US congress and also threatened to get the name of police officer to the IGP - This is purely NONSENSE! This man would have been forced to resign within 24 hours in the countries we're learning from.

Well I guess now that the MP’s are also feeling the heat of staying in traffic on the busy freeways 🛣 and not able to use the sirens to bypass traffic will force them to expand the roads to ease traffic, it’s a tragic in Ghana 🇬🇭

American Senators and Congress men even drives themselves, they don't have special drivers to be be driving them. The jobs the American lawmakers are doing, you Ghanian politicians are not doing a quarter of it.
