Wrong to call benefits a "lifestyle choice"? Feat. Ali Miraj & Marina Purkiss | Jeremy Vine

  • Rishi Sunak has said he is on a 'moral mission' to tackle so-called 'sick note culture' and get people with conditions like anxiety and depression back to work.
He vowed that benefits would remain a 'safety net' for those who genuinely need it.
But he argued the 'growing trend' of people being signed off when they may be medically fit to work was 'economically 'unstable' and 'creating a deep sense of unfairness'.

What you mean the Tory cronies the ones they gave PE contracts to worth £81 million, a month later £122 or the £200m Baroness Mone got for unusable equipment these are the entailed rich that play the system or the likes of Rees Mogg who gets paid to sleep in parliament. Oh no easier to go after the disabled less advantaged and call them scroungers .There will inevitably be some who milk the system but it is up to a medically trained doctor to decide this not a go on a witch hunt with benefit advisors this is madness.

Typical, when all else fails, lets go after the most vulnerable in society. Mental health is complex and if GP's will no longer be able to sign people off then I truly hope that those who do are qualified. As a retired Counsellor/Psychologist I have noticed that there are very few services for those with mental health illness. The services that are available have extremely long waiting lists. Investment in these services is crucial and yet for years they have been underfunded. Performative cruelty from this government will not win votes, certainly not mine.

Yeah, this isn't a debate about the monarchy, however.

Silly argument if an able bodied/mentally stable person that should be targeted . Yes they will be in low paid jobs but if they earn,t two thirds of the money themselves and UC topped them up it would still save the tax payer money. I don’t remember him saying disabled he is talking about those who can work but want stop making this out to be an attack on the disabled

I spent hours making a very long and detailed report to the relevant government department about someone who claims the top rates of benefits and PIP as "anxiety" makes him unable to work, and yet is constantly posting photos of himself on social media taking holidays across several continents (and staying in good hotels, I might add). My point is, if he is so anxious that he cannot work why would he choose to jet across the world multiple times? The taxpayer should not be funding international hoildays! I sent many screenshots of his posts and photos of his many holidays. Like, 3 or 4 a year, to America, Australia, Africa - not cheap and not an easy flight for genuine sufferers of anxiety. They did absolutely nothing. Total waste of time.

It is a lifesyle choice too many spongers who could work wont work. I suffer from anxiety and depression but did NOT use this as an excuse not to work

He is not talking about sick people! He is talking about those who seem to be workshy! And for some it is a lifestyle choice!

You have not got a clue have you. Did you not hear marina talk about Stephen who died because he was forced back to work when very ill? Their fake doctors don't care, they are doing what the government want. This is not about workshy. This is punishing the disabled!!

GPS point blank shouldn't sign off people on long term mental health issues. They aren't specialists
I agree with sunak policy here.
Many patients iv seen signed of by GPS for minor inconveniences, only to find out after a comprehensive assessment that it's nothing. Person fit to work
