  • In this sewing tutorial I will show you how to cut fabric on the bias. We need to do it when we decide to make bias cut tops and dresses, when we sew spaghetti straps, piping, or when we make binding for a quilt, etc. In this particular case, I am making a bias cut slip dress. If you want a bias cut garment to hang nicely on your body, the accuracy of cutting is very important. Don’t rush when cutting fabric on the bias. If you go even slightly off the true bias when cutting your fabric, you will have problems with how the garment will fit.

You always seem to know just what I need to learn. I was trying to figure out how to be sure I was laying my pattern on the fabric bias. Let me be sure I am understanding true bias. I have 2 questions: 1. When you were cutting bias strips, were each of your cuts on a true bias or just an any angle/bias? 2. Would you just seam the ends of the bias strips together, or connect them by laying one strip on a 90 degree angle to another strip (forming an L shape) and then sewing them together from the outside corner to the inside corner or vice versa. Also I have read the written tutorial (which was very well explained) and watched the video. Thank you for making both tutorials. I like to read how, and then watch you do it. I find both formats most useful to my understanding. I hope you understand my questions. I can't explain things as well as you do, and English is my only language.

Thank you for your feedback, I happy to hear that. As for your questions, Yes, I cut bias strips on the true bias always. And sew them together exactly as you said (form an L shape, a 90 degrees angle, etc.) when necessary. But if I need a very long binding for a quilt then I use a different method, maybe you heard about it - I can make yards of bias binding from just one fat quarter. I didn't make a tutorial on this yet but there are plenty of others who did.

Is it normal to have a straight grain and bias grain together in the side seam? It's really annoying! I tried to cut my skirt on bias but my one side seam had a bias grain at the top and straight grain at the bottom. my skirt has flare at the bottom maybe because of that? sorry if there are mistakes my English is bad. 😅

Hello, do you have a tutorial on how to sew this or any other silk on the bias? I'm searching for a best practices guide.

I actually have a detailed tutorial on making a bias cut silk dress at this link www.ageberry.com/diy-summer-dress/ but it's a printable PDF with links to videos and it's $9. It's not a tutorial on best practices on sewing silk on the bias though. But the main problem with sewing silk on the bias is cutting the fabric on the bias correctly and I have a tutorial on my site at this link www.ageberry.com/how-to-cut-fabric-on-bias/. And another piece of advice - use a serger when sewing on the bias.
