We continue our testing of various 9mm loads including the Hornady 135gr Critical Duty, Federal 124gr HST, Underwood 90gr Xtreme Defender and the Speer 147gr Gold Dot. We shoot these through drywall, wood and sheet metal into DoctorKote 10% ballistics gel. We also compare a NATO spec 9mm ball and even throw in some body armor tests you might find interesting.
With the exception of Underwood ammo, the ammo tested in this video is available at most any gun shop in the U.S. If you're interested in Underwood ammo.

Videos like this are why I watch your channel. No "hype." No "spin." Just a fairly scientific "field test" (with some admittedly unexpected results) of common rounds through common materials. Keep up your good work.
Thank you.
+Military Arms Channel I also really enjoy your videos. Will you be doing an update on the Underwood after some reliability testing? This has me seriously considering converting myself, which is surprising considering that I've always wanted the extra weight of a 124 or 147 grain round. It looks like the 90 grain round moving at a high speed is more than capable.
+swaghauler I do like these types of videos BUT I'd enjoy it MORE if he used larger sheets of drywall...nailed to studs...build a 4 ft x 8 ft wall...with more large sheets of drywall on the other side simulating an actual wall.
How about going to a junk yard and picking up a car door? Wasn't that the idea when shooting through the 20 gauge square of metal?
Shoot from a realistic "home defence" or "real life shooting" distance. Maybe 10-15 feet while running and then stationary.
Keep the videos coming though. :)
No personality
swaghauler they should of been obvious results they are not bonded HP’s you know what else they fail through? BONE! seen it in surgery a lot! If you use HP’s get bonded round of your favorite brand. Yes some are better than others but as long as it’s bonded your on the right path
The more tests I see of the Underwood offerings, I am firmly convinced that it is the superior round for all conditions and situations. It is now my carry ammo in 40 S&W.
Those fluted copper bullets only start doing much in terms of cavitation at near rifle velocities. When shooting spoiled deer meat as a test medium I found that the 90gr in 9mm Lehigh bullet acted exactly like an FMJ, the 68gr one from my .357 Sig had me wiping chunks of rotten meat off my face and it left a 1 inch hole clean through a 5 inch thick piece of leg meat, you could literally see through the hole
@@harrypeterson9287 Right on. I am running the Underwood 100gr 40 S&W load at 1500 fps.
Underwood has been my carry for a loooong time. Best stuff ever!
I went Underwood over a year as my carry round and never looked back!
Hollow point are forbidden where I live, so i'm thinking about Underwood / black hills for self defense in 9mm , are you still happy with this ammo ? Thanks :)
I switched over to Underwood 6 months ago, I love those bullets, nothing comes close as far as I'm concerned.
I bought 50 rounds today as I read some reviews saying it performed well in the FBI tests. I'm excited to run it through my firearm. Luckygunner had them in stock for 27.75 for a box of 20.
@@oveidasinclair982
Xtreme defender is for sure on my wish list of ammo.
Thing is, I'm trying to get comparisons of it and liberty civil defense 50 grain bullets.
Having a hard time finding good videos on liberty's performance in ballistic gel specifically after hitting barriers, and 3A body armor in a similar style to this video.
All good ammo but I will go with liberty ammo the most nasty and fastest round he made a video test and for the 9mm they have 2000 FPS I got a 45 acp of liberty ammo and it’s nasty it has a muzzle velocity of 1900 FPS puts all the other ammo to shame
Been carrying the Underwood XD +P+ for about 2 years, mainly because of your videos. Was a little concerned the +P+ might kick more than standard ball round, but after testing, noticed little to no difference, probably because of the lighter bullet. Great news. Underwood XD is quite expensive, so being able to practice with cheaper ball ammo is really nice for continuity in training, especially since I typically burn through 500-1000 rounds/month. Another minor, but nice, benefit of Underwood XD is that the copper bullets are lighter than lead bullet. I EDC 15 rounds in my G19, and 2 additional 15 round mags, one on each side for a broken wing situation. There is actually a noticeable overall total weight reduction between 45 rounds of the Underwood XD vrs. the others, which for EDC is really nice.
Very nicely written sir. I carried the +P+ Underwood for several years, but one afternoon when putting ON my Safe Packer holster The Lord very plainly said, "Who do you trust?" Ooops! OK.
Is that for anyone else? Not unless they, through some means, come to know that they are not to carry. Had He not asked that question I would be carrying Underwood Extreme Defender +P+ 9mm for EDC, and Underwood 10mm Extreme Defender in the woods. FWIW
I've been "thinking" of getting this ammo. After watching this video yesterday I FINALLY ordered a few boxes of UNDERWOD Exteme Defender +P+ solid copper "Phillips Head" bullet cartridges. From my 16" RUGER PC chassis carbine barrel I think it would be able to LEATHALLY hit targets at 150 yards with its light 90 grain bullet and flatter trajectory than 124 NATO FMJ.
THANK YOU FOR THIS INFORMATIVE VIDEO. Well documented very relevant tests.
Let me know how your carbine handled it at longer ranges? I’ve been very interested in what it would do in a long gun with that kind of speed.
Will Do! It's arriving in a few days. I have a HOLOSUN AEMS circle/dot sight on my RUGER PC chassis carbine and use the bottom of the circle for 100 yard targets with NATO rounds.@@benbearkiller
@@benbearkiller Will do. Going to my outdoor range soon and shooting at 50 and 100 yards using my HOLOSUN AEMS circle/dot.
Very instructive vid!
I live in Belgium and as you can expect, guns are not something very popular. A long time ago, your channel get me interested in firearms. Since, it has never stopped! Thanks for that MAC!
Antoine H. Sorry about your loss of freedom on guns
Wow! I believe I will be changing to the 90gr Underwood! This was the best ammo test and I appreciate you using a ball round to judge the other rounds by.
The Underwood Extreme Defender has become my go to carry round. It’s performance is undeniable.
Overpriced garbage that will fly through an attacker and hurt a bystander behind them
@@DB-sd3cw it reliably passes and stays close to FBI standard testing. What's your problem with that?
@@DB-sd3cw you really believe in that? That's the only reason you think it's garbage because it "over penetrates" ?

Wow, very impressive results from the Lehigh bullet! Thanks for the work you put in to give us this info.
Very good results Tim, please keep up with the exceptional work your doing. It truly is making a different's for many firearm owners who are very concerned with about there personal safety. Again, outstanding work sir. Please do not stop. There are many firearms owners who don't have time to write a comment. But I hope I can speak for everyone, in saying this is very critical information you are posting. Please don't stop. Thanks.
That was excellent and I know it was a ton work for you Tim! Thanks for taking the time to put all of this together!
My Underwood Xtreme defender came today. If a round can be a work of art, this is it. Nickel plated case and a copper nose like a phillips screwdriver. They are 9 mm 90 grain 1400 feet per sec.
Not a lot of choice in 9 mm or 38 special.
Tge NOV X ammo is also beautiful.
Midway usually has em. I want the 12ga slug.
Welcome to the club. I moved to the Leehigh XD bullet just over a year ago ounce I saw how consistent and impressive its performance was in every hand gun caliber. You have just got to make sure your gun will eat it.
Love the Underwood XD's. I've been playing with testing these since Underwood released them. They are now my primary choice of carry ammo.
Thanks to the MAC team. Love to see testing done in a way we can see and understand. I hate testing my carry ammo.. I always feel guilty, like i am wasting something.. But I test it anyway.
Thank you and I'm glad you found it to be useful.
After watching this video I decided to pick up a 100 rounds of that underwood stuff. Such consistency cannot be ignored.
I think im gonna do the same. plus+++ the other consideration is the weight of the actual cartridge. it'll help keep your carry gun light.
While I know he's doing a 9mm video but I really like the underwood 380 ammo. With 380 HP you usually have issues with consistent expanding or over pen. With Underwoods ammo it does not rely on expansion so it works very well.
@@georgiahomeboyy9855 - Lighter projectiles mean lower recoil, too. The Underwood-loaded Xtreme Defenders are really impressive rounds.👍
@What's Up? that’s not correct, the energy being delivered is what’s gonna determine recoil, so if you have a heavy bullet going slower and a lighter bullet going faster and they produce the same energy at the muzzle then they will have the same recoil.
@What's Up? well some assumptions will have to be made since federal doesn’t make a 115 gr HST, only 124 and 147. Assuming they made a 115gr hst load at 1100 FPS at the muzzle, the energy at the muzzle would then be 309 ft•Lbs, however a 147 gr at the advertised 1000 FPSM produces 326 ft•Lbs. However if federal made a 115 gr loading at 1200fpsm then the energy at the muzzle would be 368ft•Lbs, which would then produce a higher recoil impulse. This is a fairly elementary understanding of what causes recoil impulses though as there are things such as different powder types and burn rates and optimizing those with bullet grain weight.
Edit: that’s also assuming the exact same handgun, bore axis as well as grip.
Edit 2: this is the same reason USPSA and IPSC take power factor into consideration.
Started hand loading both Ext. Defenders and Ext. Penetrator for my 45/70 Guide gun over a year ago, before pistol bullet were designed. Having loaded darn near every brand of premium bullets, for over 30 years, and shot thru all kinds of things, nothing comes close to these Lehigh designs. Just bought XD-E, 4.5" and 200, 90g defenders and 100, 115g penetrators and the proper propellent to run them at top published velocities. Now you will make them more famous and even harder to find and purchase. :) They are the best in my book, period. The penetration tests I ran for the rifle produced amazing results. Wish they would make them in .375 so I can run them in my Ackley Improve Mt. rifle. Come on Lehigh...
They do make them in .357
I really appreciate how much professional effort you put into making these videos. I learned a lot here today. On a slightly different note: Mac is a very pleasant, calm, mild mannered guy. He portrays an outstanding example of what the vast majority of gun owners are - great, peaceful, law abiding citizens. We love our firearms and the pursuit of finding the best equip and ammo and for the most part, it is simply the enjoyment of gaining knowledge and proficiency. Of course we are conscious of self defense needs, but that is a given.
Mac, thanks again for the valuable resource. Based on what I know about the Underwood ED bullets, I'm switch to the 115gr .40 S&W Underwood load from my current 180gr HST ammo. If I may make a suggestion for future tests, walls are almost always 2 layers of sheetrock- 1/2" for residential and 5/8" for commercial, so practically, 2 layers with a gap to simulate the wall cavity. Your testing has been very influential in my choice of ammo and weapons (especially the torture tests that most of us would never subject guns we pay for to). At 53, I have been shooting for 48 years, but keep an open mind as advancements are made.
Looks like you spent my annual salary on high speed cameras!! Kudos on the fantastic quality. I've been recently loving and alternating between HST and Gold Dot. But I tend toward the 124 gr. loads.
"Looks like the Hornady made a 180 degree turn... in mid air, mind you...." ;-)
+Justin Opinion I guess Keith Hernandez is doing ballistic development at Hornady these days :)
You can rent the cameras for a couple hundred bucks.
That is one magic loogie.
Some of the results baffled me too. Had me looking for underwood 9mm that’s for sure. Keep up the great work. Very informative and interesting.
I have made my mind up in the ammo that I’m going to carry, Underwood.
I have been carrying Underwood Xtreme Defender in my EDC for some time now. Enjoyed the video and the info!
I’ve loved my experience with Underwood, happy to see I’ve made a good choice of my defensive ammo of choice.
You wanna see something crazy? Try their 340 grain +p+ 44 magnum round. Holy hell. 1500ish foot pounds energy.
Thanks for the real education of these rounds. Bought the 90 grain +p as a woods carry. I camp in bear and cat country. With other predictors. I feel a lot better knowing im carrying something that will save my life. I dont have all the gel and other stuff . Yet i have sent them down range. Love the Underwood Extreme Defender.
i would love to see a test of the underwood +P+ against some 3A armor.
doesn't always do much. the 68gr tho definately goes thru a lot of 3a
I ordered some underwood rounds because I wanted a lighter grain carry round. They were what was available at two different websites and your videos are very informative. Looks like I made a good choice.
That Underwood stuff looks amazing. I'd be interested to see this test done with their
.380 line as well to see if the less powerful round is bothered more by the barriers or if it also manages a "magic" 16-18 inch penetration every time simply because of the bullet shape. Another great video either way from the MAC crew.
My understanding is that Lehigh changes the shape and size of each caliber's flutes in order to keep XD penetration within the FBI ideal range, but they all are intended to lean toward the deep end of the range.
I tested the Hornady 135 grain critical duty in my Glock 17, works very well. No issues with malfires. I did not do any ballistic testing. Thanks for putting up this video, very insightful.
Great video and slow motion footage
notice how after each shot the gun goes to slide lock..because he only loads 1 round for each test...but in the slow motion, the gun feeds another round after shot.....hmmmm
Bozey Sig maybe he filmed the slow motion once he decided to run a magazine of each type of ammo through the VP
They probably just filled the recoil shot separate, would save him having to buy another multiple thousand dollar camera so it makes total sense.
I thought you when to Court order on your Samsung iPhone. 4 judge order that family. Anchorage Ak. Keep open your mouth with your family Kingdom.
@@bouchakhamphanh4406 that makes no sense whatsoever
This video is the reason I switched to 9mm Underwood extreme defender +P for my carry round! Such impressive performance! Consistent, deep penetration no matter the barrier! Awesome performance!
The conventional hollow points performed about as I expected. What really surprised me was the performance of the Lehigh bullet. I'm happy with my HSTs, but I'm definitely going to look into the Lehigh more.
Get them from underwood..they loaded hotter than the loaded ammo from lehigh
Underwood XD +p is my carry/ home defense round of choice for all my handguns. 380,9, and 45.
Tim amazing video!! I personally would love to see the test done in reverse....what would happen if a round went through 12” of gel and then into a common barrier
That's a good test idea.
That is a real world home defense situation.
Great suggestion!,!
Pig carcass would be more representative of a human body.
That would be an interesting test. Surprised we don't see this idea more.
It is hard to beat perfection! UL90-19; Underwood Leighigh 90gr 19inches is in every test you and others have done appears to totally barrier blind. I really love what 22Plinkster did with the 10mm Underwood on 1.5+" armored glass! Mind Blowing!!!
Very interesting tests! Keep in mind that what appears in gel to be a "stretch" cavity is that pistol rounds don't have enough energy to truly tear tissue, so the gel actually shows the temporary stretch cavity. Otherwise, the actual damage path of the bullet is the "permanent crush" cavity.
+muddlemann My thoughts exactly, and that is why I think hollow points designed for expansion remain a better choice for defensive purposes. I appreciate the innovation in the Lehigh bullet, but at this point remain skeptical that it's a genuine improvement in anything other than barrier penetration.
Exactly this. Everyone who does gel tests regularly will say that the temporary cavity from pistol rounds is meaningless.
Right he measured permanent cavity, he never commented on the temporary cavity but even if he did the underwood would have out-done the hollowpoints anyway.
You need to think of XD vs hollow point like water jet vs band saw. The XD is designed to fly fast and maximize its utilization of fluid dynamics.
Underwood is doing an excellent job with an innovative bullet design. Very impressed with its performance. Thanks for doing the research MAC.
I'm still sold off HST. That Underwood does pretty well though also.
HST has the best expansion, hence the reason for less penetration
This is the best ballistics gel video I've seen! Great job! I'm getting me some plus p plus!
Excellent video! That Underwood is pretty impressive. Though I must say, HST is solid and definitely priced far better than the rest. You can generally get a 50rd box of the HST for less than a 20rd box in any of the others. That being said, training and reliability testing with the HST rounds is more realistic for most shooters.
The good ole days of cheap ammo zz
Beautiful editing....That was a treat..Slow motion replay. Nice touch.
I carry the Underwood Extreme Defense 9MM when my feet are on pavement, and Underwood Extreme Penetrators 10MM when my feet are on dirt. It is reassuring to know anything I shoot won't get lead poisoning.
I believe no better option exists…
Your tests and examples are excellent for us less experienced shooters, thanks a bunch and keep up the great work!
Thank you and thanks for watching.
That underwood bullet is so good looking after it almost feels like a waste lol you could probably buy one box and just keep reloading it. haha
Like you, 147 grain JHP's have been my carry round for years, but, now I am strongly cosidering the Underwood's, great video, thanks for the info!
I would have loved to see a FMJ control. Only criticism. Video was still great. Thank you for the video.
Wasn't you really watching ??? He d I d fire a 124 grain FMJ to see what it would do... !!!!!!!!!
I just picked up 40 rounds of Underwood’s 147 grain bonded jacketed hollow point Speer +P+ 9mm round to be used in my Beretta CX4 Storm for home defense.
*loads one round, fires, slide locks open*
Slow-mo: *fires round, feeds magic brand new 2nd round*
🤔🤔🤔🤔
You can see in the real time shot that there isn't a slow motion camera present. He takes the time to fire a additional round while using slow mo. If there is any one person on TH-cam that i would trust to not try n blow smoke in mirror's that would be Tim.
same 3seconds of stock footage after every shot …...……. wuuuu wuuu whyyyyyyyy
@@aquablaster86 Your exposed ulnar nerve seems to be broken...
Seems like he only has one slow mo camera so for production value he uses it to show the gun firing from above and another of the bullet actually hitting the gelatin.
Really interesting testing. I couldn't help but notice that all 4 rounds did as they should have when shot directly into the gel. without barriers. By that I mean, they did not over-penetrate, and left a wound channel as expected .
Educational video....thanks for doing this.
This test confirms my previous research: HST is the best, Gold Dots NOT consistent as HSTs and not not excellent, Hornady needs to go back to the drawing board and the Lehigh are a fantastic game changer! I like them better or at least as much as the HST.
critical duty is DESIGNED for barrier penetration. Critical defense should have been used for this test.
HST are my preference for carry due to its extreme mushrooming
The only thing I can offer is that from classes I've taken involving vehicles we saw firsthand how much better bonded bullets do at preventing jacket separation and general breakup versus the laminated windshield glass.
This was an awesome test! Thank you so much for posting this, I honestly believe the 9mm extreme defender is the best 9mm lead ever made!
Don't pay attention to the bad comments, their all idiots

Great and informative vid. I went to Underwood too thanks to one of your early vids. The most consistent ammo there is. Your tests, my tests, everybody's tests! You are the best!

“Very Interesting ... “. HST 🤘🏼
Thank you! I've been questioning my long-standing choice of Underwood for EDC. Some sites call it a gimmick round relying on the hydraulic effect. Thanks for reaffirming things so I don't have to listen to the "noise".
Is your Xtreme Defender 9mm carry round +P or +P+ ? You used both in the testing which is why I am confused, please clarify.
Great video, my carry ammo for my 9mm was Hornady critical duty. Now I think I’m going to change to Underwood, seemed very consistent. For 45 ACP XDS HST 230 +P. Greatly appreciate you taking the time to make these videos. Very informative and it’s changed my practices.
good video M.A.C. I wonder if the underwood +p+ would penatrate 3A soft body armor
I appreciate you taking the time to make videos like this, MAC. It's always nice to see any additional information on different carry loads and how they perform in different situations. Thank you!
A 124gr Gold Dot would have penetrated more appropriately (not as deep). 147gr is too heavy for the Gold Dot's expansion. In gel at the right temperature, the 147 goes 18" or so which is really on the high side or too much. The 124 stays around 16".
The 124gr gold dot would have still failed on the wood and definitely on the metal sheet so I dont think it would have made much of a difference, Gold Dot is amazing but from what I've seen with 9mm the HST has a higher chance of expanding than gold dot
The VP9 keeps locking open, but upon further inspection from the slow-mo, we see it did in fact load another round. Astounding!
Would be cool if you did a .40 test with the same companies and then do the 9mm winner vs the .40 winner.
People are dumb.. they dont like 40... And because the masses dont like 40, i had to switch too... So now im carrying 9mm because half the stores dont have 40, and if they do its american eagle fmj, and one brand of hp ammo.. vs 25 brands of 9mm fmj, and atleast that many jhp... In a perfect world 40 would ve as common as 9mm.. its just a better round for this use ..
Great demonstration and test efforts. Now I switch my defense Ammo to Underwood too. Thanks!
Honestly, does anyone make a better bullet than Underwood??? I'm beyond impressed with every single round they make
Enjoyed revisiting this test, and have to add, IMO this is one of the best, most comprehensive and most interesting tests I've seen to date.
I must say, I'm curious to know if you decided to switch to carrying Underwood loads, and if so, do you still?
Because of your channel ID - I always want to call you "Mac" and have seen others do so. Do you prefer it, or prefer your real name?
Thanks again for not only your efforts, but for doing so in a manner and style which deserves an high subscription number!

Shootingthebull410 has ruined me. I keep thinking about how 1 shot tests don't account for flukes and I am left thinking 'what if' after every shot.
+Wedelj
Amen to that. His stuff is simply the best.
Yeah. I'm in that same boat haha.
this test is still useful, but I much prefer seeing more rounds used
+Matthew Schwarz
Agreed.
+Matthew Schwarz I understand why he doesn't isn't using more rounds. It would be enormously time consuming to have to recast gel after each brand of ammo. I appreciate the information MACs giving showing a simple comparison. Especially considering its information that costs me nothing haha
+Wedelj From a scientific perspective, shooting multiple rounds using clean blocks each time would definitely product the best data. In MAC's tests, he provided us a good cursory idea of what might happen but his results really need to be verified through repetitive testing.
Great stuff as usual MAC! I carry the Lehigh Defense Extreme Penetrator in my 380 for the exact reason you pointed out consistency! That and the fact that in a 380 it's the only non-ball round that penetrates deep enough to be sure it will do the job and leaves a meaningful wound channel. Your test of that load was great as well. Good stuff!
I have also shot +P and +P+ Underwood ammo through military soft bodyarmor with the same results, only difference i noticed is the +P+ has less surface area i.e. the front of the projectile the cross is noticeable smaller than the +P. What R your thoughts..
I bet, in testing, it was noted that the more powerful +p+ load reacted similar to the Penetrators, so they made the flutes a bit bigger.
Really good test. I like the way you planned this test. I also like the way you are presenting each brand of ammo with no favoritism, or spin. Your other videos are the same way. Honesty, critical thinking, good planning, and excellent analysis, that’s why I love this channel.
Keep up the excellent work!!! You are definitely methodical.
+Military Arms Channel
A while back you did an abbreviated test of .380 loads out of a Kahr pistol with a 2.5" barrel and showing the advantages of ball ammo in that cartridge. Can you do a similar test, maybe with a wider field of ammo and / or pistols used, for the 9mm Makarov?
The reason for the request is simple. Pistols chambered for the 9mm Makarov round are typically significantly less costly than their .380 and 9mm brethren, yet the round itself offers better stats on velocity and bullet weight than the .380 and the pistols are much more affordable than a quality 9mm handgun, particularly one intended for concealment.
I'm happy to help with ammo or pistols, as well as purchase a Bulgarian from Copper Custom if that helps. Please advise how I can help defray the cost of such a test. Thanks in advance.
Well, that sure is interesting. I used to keep my PPQ loaded with Hornady's Critical Defense, but have since switched to the Critical Duty because of the extra weight and barrier penetration. It's startling to see that 90gn Lehigh bullet perform so well. And I'm not surprised that Underwood's load is superb, but that result is just amazing.
HST all day long
Been telling people about HST's in 9mm ever since I saw ShootingTheBull410's video covering it, such a great defensive round in 9mm.
Definitely the most bang for your buck. I think its perfectly capable in 99% of defensive situations
I like the HST's but for the $ Remington Goldem Saber is hard to beat, I really like the 124 grain +p variant. After watching this I might pick up some Underwood Extreme Defender's. I'm curious if they would cause much of a poi shift?
HST are good but if your willing to pay a little more the Underwood is way better and way more consistent

Thank you for posting this video. I've been carrying the 135gr Critical Duty in my carry gun. This is making me reevaluate my decision.
Thank you … I think I’ll stick with the critical defense around.
Been shooting the Lehigh 45/70 305g and 325g extreme penetrator, and defense for over 2 years. Awesome, accurate, penetration and cavitation. So, they made the peashooter version and I bought a 9mm XD-E, 4.5" and it loves the 90g and I found the powder that will run them at 1515 d fps with no problem and plenty accurate for a snake shooter. Enjoyed seeing your tests.
And this is why I carry HST
Old video, but good info. HST’s have a bad habit of clogging and not expanding. The Underwood has a much bigger permanent damage profile. I gave up on HST about the time this vid came out. Lehigh or Underwood in all my pistols and rifles.
Great test! Would’ve liked to seen Hornady critical defense, Underwood or Lehigh Extreme penetrator +P+, critical duty put do all the same tests especially the vest.
Don't want to over penetrate that stretch cavity....
😄 Well played sir.
wow, what a great video Mac. thanks for undertaking the challenge. must have taken a ton of time to do. this will definitely change my carry load decisions.
feel like you need a lab coat on when doing these tests lol
love my 124gr +p+ hst's. Been my carry load for many years now. Managed to score a bunch from a local LEO a while back when they were hard/impossible to get commercially.
Corbin DPX would be a great test against the Xtreme penetrator
Thanks for spending the time to share this with us Tim.

I appreciate your honesty and no hype. I have been caring the Critical Defense for 2 years. I will change to the Underwood. My department has been looking for a replacement for the Critical Defense due to over pentation. I will direct them to your video. Thank you.
Critical defense shouldn't have over penetration issues, they usually barely make the minimum penetration standards, are you thinking of critical duty? The round tested in this video is critical duty.

You shooting at elephants again Zraupp10?
I've carried HST in my 45's and 9mm's. But the facts are undeniable. The Underwood was the most consistent performer. Which is why I switched to Underwood. The low recoil is very noticeable in a positive way.
did anyone else notice in regular speed the slide locks open after the shot, and in show mo it cycles?
+theOGtDoubleJR shot at 2 different times i guess for effect
Bingo. Only one slow motion camera. It can't be on the gel and the gun at the same time.
+Military Arms Channel I know ammo isn't cheap, but I am currently carrying federal HST 147g. +P and the only trustworthy tests are shot out of small frame ( less than 3" barrel ) pistols. Long story short I was really curious of the performance out of a 4" plus barrel. I own a standard size M&P 9mm. Keep up the very informative videos.
+theOGtDoubleJR It shows that MAC is lying about it's slow mo lol. And tbh it kinda stupid to test barrier that are so thin. They are as good as if they are not there. lol sheet metal? seriously?
+picotnator The difference between the 4" and 3" barrel would be negligible. You wouldn't be able to tell the difference with the human eye along with inconsistency between two rounds(+/- 50 fps).
there is something strangely calming about watching ballistic gel impacts.
I thought over penetration is an undesirable thing with a defensive/home protection round? Don't we want the energy to stop with the target?
Yes. There are some scenarios where over penetration could be what you need. But in my opinion, an everyday self defense round that over penetrates is asking for trouble. The HST looked to be the best self defense round in this test. It would have been nice to see what the critical defense round would do in these scenarios because the critical duty is designed more for law enforcement where shooting through barriers is more likely. The critical defense is touted as more of a self defensive round. Lastly, it is possible a bad guy may have body armor, however, I would not bet my life it is a 2A threat level. Plus, even if it was, the round in this test is going to go through the 2A and then continue probably through the target and who knows where or what it's going to strike before stopping.

You said it dude. This test was bassackwards until the armor came out.
I think we learned that regardless of the gel temp all these rounds are going to end up in your kids room. Scary shit.
Great vid. Was just looking for a reason to change my mind, but still same. The light Underwood for carry and HST for home.
You Forgot One The Liberty Civil Defense Round 50 gr. 2000 fps. OOOOYAHHHH
Great Video MAC. I switched my defense load after your first video of the Underwood/Lehigh ammo. Great stuff
man if you going to test 147 gold dot then you should have used 147 grain hst not 124
I agree. The bullet choices were kinda random. Not really comparing apples to apples.
Having same grain bullet weights does make more sense but both the HST and the Gold Dots are top of their class
I'm assuming he shot what was on hand from each brand.
Wasnt exactly advertised to be an apples to apples comparison. Was just testing common defensive ammo. 90,124,135,147 none were the same.
TWO pieces of 20 gauge, hot rolled steel with a Galvanized finish are set three inches apart. The steel is in six inch squares. The gelatin block is covered with Light Clothing and placed 18 inches behind the rear most piece of steel.
