I’ve been listening to Reggie’s book “Disrupting the Game” and he mentions how Nintendo of Japan did NOT like this ad campaign and were totally against it (thought the Japanese businessmen were acting far too familiar with strangers). Reggie pushed hard for it and that’s why we have it today. Good thing because they are excellent and memorable commercials.

But in the Wii U commercials, they didn’t show what the Gamepad was capable of doing in a sufficient way. They only showed it off as a “newer” Wii console that can have you play without having to use a TV, and later confusing people that the Wii U was an accessory for the Wii, and not as a whole console. With how bad the Wii U sold, all Nintendo did later was trying so hard to persuade to people that the Wii U was an entirely brand new console, and not showing how capable the console was at being powerful and fun (for example, those AWFUL kid commercials, where the kids were like: “wE aLrEaDy hAvE a wIi sWeEtIe!!”). Not to mention, Nintendo kind of marketed the Wii U as a console that was exclusively just for kids… there was a lack of diverse among those commercials, where the adults and teens can also have fun with it, like here. At least they learned their lesson with the Switch.
You know what they should've done for the Wii U? Brought back those guys from the old Wii commercials, have them knock at a family's door and say, "Wii would like to play with U."
If Nintendo were to remake this commercial, show off Wii U's great titles and change the catchphrase to "U would like to play" or "Would U like to play" then the Wii U would definitely be giving the Xbox One and PS4 a run for their money.

I think the Wii U is great, and I love how it finally has fair support for 3rd party titles along with it's own exclusives....But your marketing for this console sucks. Bring back these guys and make a memorable promotion that sicks out. That and keep in mind, the Wii was praised for the novelty of having the world's first motion games. Today, that's old. Tablet and touch, old. What Nintendo has pieced together with the Wii U is great, but it's technological backbone isn't exactly new anymore. Today it's all about COD, and COD, and uhmm..COD. And of course which console is better, which is more like the PC, and what averages higher FPS on said benchmark? Seriously nothing against 1st person shooters, but is that like the only thing out anymore? Where's the variety again, where every game was unique?
I'm not sure what it is, it could be the music, the low quality, but this ad gives me that warm feeling and makes me miss the times when every one of your friends would bring the Wii out during sleepovers. Everything about this ad makes this a relic and I would love to experience this time again at the age I am now.

I wanted the Wii, one of them a Xbox 360 and the other a PS3, we ended up getting them and then we would constantly argue about witch one was the best, and having game nights... One weekend we were at the PS3 guys house playing that, next we played the 360 and next the Wii and then it started all over... Drinking copious amounts of Coke and Red Bull... Then in the middle of the night when we wanted a break from the gaming we usually went outside and did stupid stuff around the block like blowing up mailboxes, set stuff on fire or fuck up our schoolyard... Nostalgia really hits me sometimes...
Stuff like this make me glad to own a Wii AND Wii U in 2021. I'm now 14, and looking back at this stuff is so nostalgic. The Wii and Wii U are the only consoles I have, and will continue to play.

The Wii was phenomenal. It didn't have the cutting edge graphics, but it was hella fun to play with.

I love all the small Nintendo game references scattered about: Bullet Bill on the side of the smart car, the Triforce on the street sign, in the apartment building there are some fire flowers on the wall, and my favorite as they are walking away from the car on the farm in the corner you can see Power Mushrooms growing

Since the wiiu ads were about togetherness or whatever this would achieve the same result but better.
I'm a huge Nintendo fan yet I'm nerding out mostly over the Yoshida Brothers playing their song Kodo in the background

In my opinion, the best TV commercial for any console. Very few words, and they say soooo much. :-)
If these guys in front of the doorstep invited me to play a console saying "Wii would like to play", I would.
